Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these players has the highest MLB career batting average?

Answer: John Paciorek

Remember, I didn't specify a minimum number of at-bats. Many players have batted 1.000 for their careers, but Paciorek stands alone as doing it over the most at-bats. He played one game, at the age of 18, for Houston in 1963, and went 3-for-3 with 2 walks 4 runs and 3 RBIs. Ty Cobb had a .367 average.
2. Which of these pitchers has the lowest MLB career ERA?

Answer: Rocky Colavito

Again, no minimums specified. Of course many pitchers have had a career ERA of 0.00, but only 4 of them also had a perfect winning percentage (1-0 in each case). Colavito gets the tie-breaker by allowing the fewest hits (1 in 6 innings). He threw 3 innings of relief for Cleveland in 1958, and 3 more innings for the Yankees in 1968, that time beating Detroit. Calavito is of course better known for his 374 home runs. Ed Walsh had a 1.82 ERA.
3. Which of these pitchers had the better MLB career winning percentage?

Answer: Ben Shields

Again, no minimum, and of course many pitchers have perfect winning percentages, but Shields did it over the most decisions. He won 3 games for the Yankees in 1925, and 1 for the Phillies in 1931. 4-0 makes him the career leader despite allowing 55 hits and 27 walks in his 41 inning career, and having an 8.34 career ERA. Al Spalding had .796 win percentage.
4. Which deaf-mute player inspired the concept of non-verbal signs, and stole 607 bases in his career?

Answer: William Hoy

William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy began his career in 1888 and played into the 20th century. He hit .291 in addition to the steals.
5. Who set a MLB career record for inside-the-park home runs with 51?

Answer: Sam Crawford

In addition to setting the career triple record, he also hit 51 inside the parkers. Tommy Leach set the NL record with 49, and Ty Cobb set the AL record with 46.
