Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rickey Henderson blew away the Major League in 1982 when he stole an amazing 130 bases with the Athletics. Whose season record did he break?

Answer: Lou Brock

Lou Brock of the Cardinals broke Maury Wills' record in 1974, who Wills broke Ty Cobb's record in 1962. Brock stole 118 to smash Wills' record before Henderson was the king of thievery. Henderson retired with 1406 thefts, and was the first to reach 1000. When he retired in 2003, he was still the only speedster to reach 1000.
2. Since intentional walks became an official statistic in 1955, Barry Bonds became the first player to be given 100 intentional walks when he was walked intentionally 120 times in 2004. Whose record did he break of 68 intentional walks in a season?

Answer: His own

The others all retired long before 1955. The stat began with Ted Kluszewski when he was walked 25 times in the season. Bonds set his record of 68 in 2002 before smashing his own record with 120 in 2004. Bonds walked a total of 232 times in 2004, breaking his own record again of 198 in 2002.
3. Amazingly enough, the great Cy Young retired in 1911 breaking the record for most career losses as a pitcher with 316. Whose record did he break that had 310 career losses?

Answer: Pud Galvin

The others did not begin their careers until after 1955. In the 'old days' of baseball, it was not uncommon for a pitcher to start 50 games in a season. Young's career record was 511-316, while Galvin who retired in 1892 with the St. Louis Browns of the National League, had a 364-310 record. Young's loss record still stood at the end of the 20th century.
4. The legendary manager Connie Mack retired in 1950 after coaching for 53 seasons, appearing in 7755 games. Whose managerial record did he break for most career games?

Answer: John McGraw

The other managers came after 1950. Mack managed in Pittsburgh for three seasons before helming the Philadelphia Athletics in the new American League in 1901. He retired in 1950 after 50 seasons with the Athletics. McGraw managed for three seasons in Baltimore before picking up the New York Giants for 31 seasons. John retired with 4769 games managed in 1932.
5. Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners broke a 84-year old record by poking out 262 hits in 2004. Whose record did he break of 257 that was set in 1920?

6. When Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit 73 home runs in the 2001 season, whose season record did he break?

Answer: Mark McGwire

McGwire of the 1998 Cardinals, broke Roger Maris' record of 61 set in 1961 with the Yankees. Big Mac removed the controversy of Babe Ruth hitting 60 in 1927 during a 154-game season, versus Maris' 61 during a 162-game season.
7. The 2001 Seattle Mariners fell one game short of breaking a 95-year old record for most games won in a season with 116. Which Major League team did they tie?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The other teams listed did not exist until after 1960. The 1906 Cubs led by player-manager Frank Chance, went 116-36 in the season. Although heavily favored in the World Series, they lost to the Chicago White Sox four games to two.
8. When Pete Rose retired in 1986, he had appeared in 3562 games in his hustling career. Which career Boston Red Sox player's record did he break for most career games?

Answer: Carl Yastrzemski

9. Babe Ruth smashed a home run record in 1927 by clouting 60 home runs for the Yankees. Whose American League season record did he break?

Answer: His own

The Babe broke his own record of 59 that he hit in 1921. That 59 in 1921 broke his own record of 54 which he hit in 1920, which broke his own record again of 29 in 1919 while playing for the Red Sox.
10. The great Nolan Ryan struck out 383 batters in the 1973 season as a California Angel. Whose modern day record did he surpass by only one strikeout?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Ryan's last batter of the season which he struck out, allowed him to hold the record by himself. Koufax of the Dodgers struck out 382 in his 1965 Cy Young and Triple Crown winning season. Sandy broke the record of 348 thrown by Cleveland Indian Bob Feller in 1946.
