Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which slugger set a World Series record for hitting five home runs in one series?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

The other greats never went to a World Series in their entire career. Reggie earned his nickname, Mr. October, by hitting five in the 1977 series as a Yankee against the Dodgers. This included hitting three in game six. The Yankees won the series four games to two, and Reggie was the MVP of the series. Jackson hit 18 postseason home runs throughout his career, with 10 being in the World Series.
2. Which team was the first to win five games in one World Series?

Answer: 1903 Boston Pilgrims

The World Series did not begin until 1903, and the 1927 and 1931 series were best-of-seven. The Pilgrims won the first World Series against the heavily-favored and star-studded Pittsburgh Pirates, fives games to three. Boston pitcher Bill Dineen won three of the games while the great Cy Young won the other two. In 1907, the franchise became the Red Sox.
3. Which of the following players retired with 14 World Series appearances under his belt?

Answer: Yogi Berra

Berra played from 1946-1965, all but one season with the Yankees. Yogi went to an amazing 14 World Series going 10-4, with his best performance in the 1953 series against the Dodgers. In that series, Berra hit .429 with nine hits including a home run. Yogi was a three-time regular season MVP, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972.

Henderson went to three and Lofton to two World Series.
4. In the 1968 World Series pitting the Detroit Tigers against the St. Louis Cardinals, which pitcher set a record by striking out 35 batters in the series?

Answer: Bob Gibson

The others were not pitchers, never played for the Cardinals or Tigers, and had not begun their careers yet. The Cardinals lost the series four games to three, behind Tiger pitcher Mickey Lolich's MVP performance. After going 22-9, earning him the Cy Young and MVP in the National League for the regular season, Gibson went 2-1 in 27 innings striking out 35 Tigers. Bob even hit a home run for his own cause in game four which the Cardinals won. Lolich helped clinch his series MVP by hitting a home run in game two, the only home run of his career.
5. Closing out the 20th century was a team that had a 55-year World Series appearance drought. Which team did not appear in the promised land from 1946 to 2000?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The Dodgers appeared in 15 series in the period, the Indians appeared in four, and the Twins who began their Minnesota team in 1961, appeared in three World Series in the era. The Cubs' last appearance in the century was in the 1945 series but lost to the Tigers.
6. In his seventh big league season in 1990, and his first with the Reds, this outfielder set a record by hitting .750 in his 12 at-bats in the series against the Athletics. Who was he?

Answer: Billy Hatcher

The others were all pitchers, never played for the Reds or Athletics, and retired at least 15 years earlier. Billy went 9-for-12 with four doubles, a triple, and four singles. The Reds won the series but the MVP went to Reds' pitcher Jose Rijo who won two games.
7. Which team was the first in history to lose three World Series by being skunked, not winning a game in the series?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees made more World Series appearances than any other franchise in the first 100 years of Major League baseball. This dubious honor of being the first team skunked three times, was overshadowed by their dominance in the series, including five consecutive titles from 1949-1953.

The Yankees were first shutout in 1922 by the Giants, with the series ending up in a 4-0-1 loss. Their second skunking came in 1963 at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their third was in 1976 against the Big Red Machine, Cincinnati Reds.
8. The 1903 World Series was a battle of pitching, but not in the way that one would think. Two pitchers in the series set the two marks for hits allowed in a series, and they both stood untouched for over 100 years. Deacon Phillippe was one pitcher who allowed 38 hits in the series. Who was the other pitcher who allowed 31 hits?

Answer: Cy Young

The others were pitchers, but would not start their careers for at least another 30 years. Pilgrims pitcher Bill Dineen, who won three of the five Boston games, also allowed 29 hits, a third place record that would stand until 1924 when Walter Johnson of the Senators allowed 30 hits in that series.

The Pilgrims (later Red Sox) would win the series against the Pirates, five games to three.
9. New York Yankee Roy White tied a World Series record in 1978 by scoring nine runs. He tied a record set in 1928 by which other Yankee great?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The others never played for the Yankees, but also would not start their MLB career for at least another 30 years. Yankee Lou Gehrig also tied this mark in the 1932 World Series. Ruth, who hit 54 home runs in the season, his fourth and final time of hitting over 50, scored nine runs in the 1928 series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Babe hit .625 in the series with three home runs, four RBIs, and nine runs scored. Ruth's final World Series appearance was in 1932, before retiring as a Boston Brave in 1935.
10. Which of the following managers took their team to more World Series?

Answer: John McGraw

The other managers all went to four World Series. McGraw, who managed the New York Giants for 31 seasons in his 33-season career, took the Giants to 10 World Series. He retired in 1932 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937.
