Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1976, which animated Yankee manager was tossed from game four of the World Series for throwing balls on to the field?

Answer: Billy Martin

The others never managed the Yankees. Martin, who was already irate by watching his Yankees down three games to none, finally let it all go. Umpire Bruce Froemming, in his first World Series, did the deed and gave Billy the boot. The Reds skunked the Yankees in four games.
2. Which St. Louis Cardinal was in a fight in the 1934 World Series, then officially ejected in the following inning for the purpose of removing him for his own protection?

Answer: Joe Medwick

The others listed were all Tigers, and never played for the Cardinals. It was Medwick, who had already batted .379 with 11 hits in the series, was the part of a shortened brawl in the seventh game at Navin Field in Detroit. Playing in the Cardinal outfield, Joe encountered debris and threats being thrown from the Tiger fans in the following innning. Already behind in game seven 11-0, the Tiger fans were already upset and about to see their Tigers go down in flames.

After conversation with the baseball commissioner about the situation, umpire Harry Geisel stopped play the following inning and officially ejected Medwick for his own safety.
3. Which player was ejected in the 1901 World Series?

Answer: The was no 1901 World Series

The World Series did not begin until 1903, when the world saw the Boston Pilgrims defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, five games to three. None of the others listed were born when this World Series inauguration took place.
4. Which Cincinnati Reds' pitcher, who did not pitch in the game, was ejected while sitting on the bench in game three of the 1970 World Series?

Answer: Clay Carroll

The others were all Orioles. Carroll was in his seventh season of baseball in 1970. Clay did not pitch and was not scheduled to pitch in the game. Carroll was still upset over the game prior, game two, and some of the calls that were made by the home plate umpire. Ironically, the following game, game four, Carroll went nine innings and had the only Reds' win of the series.

The Orioles defeated the Reds, four games to one.
5. Which Cardinal pitcher was ejected from game seven of the 1985 World Series, and was followed by manager Whitey Herzog one minute later?

Answer: Joaquin Andujar

None of the others listed ever played for the Cardinals in their career. Andujar, who went 21-12 during the season, came in relief of Ricky Horton in game seven. Andujar was the fifth of seven Cardinal pitchers in the game. Umpire Bob Engel, in his final World Series, had enough of Andujar and his touting about balls and strikes.

He was given his own golden boot, then manager Herzog followed. The Cardinals lost game seven 11-0 to the Kansas City Royals, and the series four games to three.
6. The 1919 World Series was to become the most scandalous in history, with the rigging by some Chicago White Sox players. Which Cincinnati Red player was ejected in game five while coaching from the third base box?

Answer: Jimmy Smith

The others were all White Sox players, and all were questioned in connection with the 'Black Sox' scandal. Smith, who began his playing career in the Federal League, played many positions for the Reds in 1919. He was a shortstop, second baseman, third baseman, and played in the outfield. He was ejected for arguing balls and strikes while coaching at third base.
7. Which 1952 Dodger pitcher was ejected from game seven of the series, and never even pitched in the series?

Answer: Ralph Branca

The others were all Dodger starting pitchers in 1952, and all appeared in three games in the series. Branca, who was in his ninth season in the Majors, and just the season prior winning 13 games for the Brooklyn team, never played in the series at all.

He was ejected from the bench for his continous yelling at home plate umpire Larry Goetz. Ironically, it was both Goetz's and Branca's last World Series game in their careers. The Dodgers lost the series, four games to three against the Yankees.
8. Which Atlanta Braves manager experienced his second World Series ejection on October 26, 1996?

Answer: Bobby Cox

The others never managed the Braves in their career. Bobby Cox took over the reins of the Braves for the second time in his career in 1990, and continued to manage them through the 2004 season. He first managed the team from 1978-1980. After being ejected from the 1992 World Series against the Blue Jays, Cox was ejected from the sixth and final game of the 1996 series against the Yankees.

The Braves lost game six by a score of 3-2, and the series four games to two.
9. The infamous Leo 'The Lip' Durocher, who gave umpires heck during his 25 season managing career, was ejected from how many World Series games?

Answer: 0

Ironically, Leo was never ejected from a World Series, but then again, he only played in three World Series which covered 15 games. He managed for the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros. In one of his many regular season ejections, he once screamed a profanity at the home plate while asking him if he was blind.

The umpire replied, "What did you say?" Leo replied with, "My God, you're deaf too!" Leo was sent to the locker room.
10. Who was the first ever person ejected from a World Series game in history?

Answer: Hughie Jennings

In his first managing season of 15 in 1907, the Detroit Tiger player-manager Jennings, went down in history as the first either player or manager that was tossed from a World Series game. He was ejected by infield umpire John Sheridan for arguing a terrible call on the steal of second base by Detroit Tiger Ty Cobb, in the second game of the series. Jennings lost the series to the Cubs, four games to none with one tie.

He took the Tigers to three consecutive World Series from 1907-1909, but came up empty in each one.
