Ray managed to break out of prison and head back to Pine Valley to get revenge on Joe and Ruth Martin. He felt that the best way to make them suffer would be to take back Tad. Ray returned to David Thornton's cabin and held Edna Thornton, Dottie Thornton, Chuck Tyler, and Donna Beck hostage.

However, he did not hold Tad hostage. He was eventually arrested, by Phil Brent, and sent back to prison.

Tom confronted Erica about her lies and told her they were finished. Erica did go behind Tom's back to turn his restaurant into a disco, which upset Tom, but Tom's request for a divorce was over Erica lying to him about wanting a baby.

Tara realized how much she loved Phil when he saved Chuck's life in the standoff with Ray Gardner and told him she wanted to renew their marriage vows. At this time, Phillip had known that Phil was his biological father and, after resenting him for some time, he finally accepted him. Phillip had also changed his name to "Charlie" and decided to go by that name. Phil got a job offer to work for the Federal Narcotics Bureau, in Washington, D.C. so he, Tara, and Charlie moved there. Off screen, Phil died in a plane explosion.

Many people had reason to kill Eddie Dorrance. He sexually assaulted Brooke, got Kelly Cole hooked on drugs, threatened to kill Mark Dalton since he and Mark competed for Brooke's interests, blackmailed Langley Wallingford and Phoebe Tyler, and he caused Claudette's demotion. Kelly was arrested for his murder and sentenced to death. Linc, as Kelly's attorney, continued to investigate the matter and he found out that Claudette Montgomery killed Eddie. Claudette tried to leave town but she got into a car crash and Linc found her.

He urged Claudette to confess the truth and she told him about how she killed Eddie. Kelly was cleared of all charges.

Langley came to town and decided to pursue Phoebe Tyler since he found out she had a lot of money. Langley asked Eddie to introduce him to a powerful woman, with wealth, and he introduced Langley to Phoebe. Langley and Phoebe began to date and they eventually got married.

Palmer and Nina Cortlandt came to town and, on the night that Phoebe welcomed them to Pine Valley, Nina collapsed and was taken to the hospital. It was revealed that her appendix had ruptured but Nina's life was saved through an appendectomy. Nina started to fall in love with Cliff Warner but Palmer objected to them being together. Palmer teamed up with Sybil Thorne, a nurse at Pine Valley Hospital, to break up Cliff and Nina. Sybil informed Palmer about Cliff's former girlfriend, Janice Rawlins, and Palmer tracked down Janice.

He bribed her into lying to Nina about Cliff leaving her when she was pregnant. Nina broke up with Cliff but eventually got back together with him.
