Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What began the chain of events that led to Phil Brent finding out who his biological father was?

Answer: Car accident

Phil was involved in a car accident and he became very sick. The doctors said he needed to have a blood transfusion in order to survive. Nick Davis' blood type proved to be a match for Phil and Nick donated blood to save Phil's life. That was where Phil found out Nick was his biological father. Eventually, Nick and Phil bonded as father and son.
2. Who did Erica marry in 1971?

Answer: Jeff Martin

Erica's first husband was Jeff Martin and they married in 1971. Erica became pregnant with Jeff's child but decided to have an abortion since she would gain weight, as a result of the pregnancy, and lose her modeling gigs. Erica had the abortion but did not tell Jeff. Jeff found out and divorced Erica.

In 2006, this part of history was retconned when it was revealed that Dr. Greg Madden, the man who performed Erica's abortion, actually transplanted her fetus into that of his wife and his wife gave birth to a baby boy named Josh (Josh was Jeff and Erica's son).
3. In 1971, what place in the ratings was the show at the entire year?

Answer: Last place

In its first years, "All My Children" did not start out as strong in the ratings. In 1970, they ranked 17th out of 18 soaps and, in 1971, they were in last place out of 18 soap opera on the air. However, they gained in viewers every single year. In 1979, "AMC" became the highest rated soap opera when it overtook "As The World Turns." In 1980, "AMC" was dethroned from being the top rated soap opera when "General Hospital" became the number one rated soap.
4. What did Phil and Tara do the night before he shipped out for Vietnam?

Answer: They married themselves

Tara told Phil that, before he went to Vietnam (Phil was drafted), she wanted to marry him, even if it was not official. Phil and Tara decided to say their own vows and pronounce each other husband and wife. The next day, Phil left for Vietnam and, several months later, he was presumed dead (he eventually turned up alive). Phil and Tara officially got married for the first time in 1976.
5. In 1971, which character had conservative views over the Vietnam War?

Answer: Phoebe Tyler

Throughout this year (and in subsequent years), Phoebe and Ann clashed over their beliefs concerning Vietnam. Ann was against the war and stated liberal opinions whereas Phoebe supported what happened in Vietnam and made known her conservative opinions.

The actress who played Phoebe, Ruth Warrick (Warrick was the only one who portrayed the role), was upset that her character was conservative since, in real life, Warrick was a member of the Democratic Party and spoke out against the Vietnam War. Nevertheless, she played the character as written. Later on, Phoebe became more liberal.
6. Did Joe and Ruth date in 1971?

Answer: Yes

Ruth's first husband, Ted Brent, died a year earlier and Ruth mourned him for a little bit. Afterwards, she and Joe, who had been friends, started to date and then they fell in love. They married the next year.
7. Was Kitty Shea in Pine Valley in 1971?

Answer: No

Kitty Shea, who was originated by actress Francesca James, actually arrived in Pine Valley the following year. She became smitten with Linc Tyler, Phoebe and Charles' son, and they started to fall for each other. Phoebe tried everything she could to break them up but she was unsuccessful. Francesca James served as Executive Producer for "AMC" from 1996 to 1998.
8. Did Mona Kane and Dr. Charles Tyler marry in 1971?

Answer: No

Mona and Charles did not marry in 1971 since Charles was still married to Phoebe. They did not have a good marriage and it was clear they were going to eventually divorce (they did divorce in the late 1970s). Charles and Mona slowly began to fall in love and they eventually married several years later. They remained married until Charles died in the mid 1980s.
9. Which of these people did NOT work at Pine Valley Hospital in 1971?

Answer: Paul Martin

Since Paul Martin worked as a lawyer, he would not have worked at Pine Valley Hospital. Joe Martin began working at the hospital a year earlier and he practiced internal medicine. Jeff Martin, like his dad, began work at the hospital in 1970. Dr. Clader worked at Pine Valley Hospital for many years and 1971 was one of those years. He was an OB-GYN.
10. What was Nick Davis' occupation in 1971?

Answer: Dance teacher/owner of a dance studio

Nick had a passion for dance and he was a dance teacher for many years. He also owned the studio for which he taught dance. The actor who originated the role of Nick David was Laurence Keith. He was Mona Kane's best friend and is also close to Erica. His original run on the show lasted from 1970 to 1978.

He returned in 1994 for Mona's funeral and in 2005 to celebrate Joe Martin's 35 years at the hospital.
