Answer: His father is killed in a plane crash

The first scene of this episode shows Nick looking out over the water as the wreckage of his father's plane is pulled out. We soon learn that Nick had a troubled relationship with his father Dutch, who was the Darling family lawyer. Dutch spent most of his time attending to the Darlings, neglecting his wife and son. Nick's mother leaves eventually, abandoning Nick to Dutch's care. Nick starts his own life, but never loses his distaste for the world of the Darlings and his father's preoccupation with it.

Then Dutch's plane crashes.

Answer: Brian Darling

The Darling family pulls up to the funeral in style and is met by a swarm of press. The first person we meet is the family patriarch, Tripp Darling, played by the indomitable Donald Sutherland, and his wife, Letitia Darling. Karen steps out, with a companion, and the press begins a barrage of questions. Patrick Darling appears next, and we learn that he is a politician who is probably going to run for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Juliet Darling arrives, and the questions she is asked makes it clear that she is an actress and very likely a bad one. Finally, Jeremy saunters in looking like the consummate playboy. Just when it seems like introductions are over, Nick enters the church, and we learn that the priest is the seventh member of the Darling family - Brian Darling.

Answer: $10 million annually to give to charities

Nick has no desire to work for the Darling family (or at least that's what he claims). He agrees to meet with Tripp in order to set up a charity in his father's name. Once at the meeting, Tripp offers him the job. As an incentive, Tripp offers a $2.5 million salary with an additional $5 million per year to donate to the charity of his choice. Nick is surprised, and considers accepting.

However, he stipulates that he must have a regular work week in order to make sure he has time to spend with his family. Also, he asks for $10 million for charitable purposes. Tripp readily agrees to all Nick's conditions, and Nick takes the job in spite of his better judgment.

Answer: Hiring musicians for Darling parties

Karen and her fiancé Freddy await Nick in his office when he arrives at work. Apologizing for being late, he begins to show them the pre-nuptial agreements. However, Karen awkwardly mentions that Nick was her first lover and proceeds to reminisce in a way that makes both Freddy and Nick very uncomfortable. Next, Nick travels to Maple Grove Academy where Brian is attempting to bribe the headmaster into allowing his illegitimate son into the academy. Brian stalks off - to perform a baptism, no less - when Nick arrives, leaving him to deal with the mess. Finally, Jeremy is arrested when illegal immigrants are discovered on board the yacht he won from Ethan Hawke.

When you add in dealing with Juliet's talent problems and forgetting to pick up his daughter from school, Nick had a pretty full day. (There were musicians at the Darling's anniversary party but Nick was never shown hiring them.)

Answer: A horse

Jeremy announces that he and the absent Juliet were in charge of picking out a gift this year, and presents a race horse named "Irish Ice" - complete with jockey - to his parents. Letitia seems overjoyed with the present, while Tripp seems more concerned with getting the horse out of their house before it makes a mess.

Answer: She overdosed on medication

Juliet is infuriated when she finds out that Tripp had bribed the director of her play into giving her the lead role. She claims she wants to prove she can make it on her own. Letitia is sympathetic, but assures her that Tripp is only interfering out of love.

She then requests that Juliet not make a scene at their party in the evening - a request Juliet ignores by rummaging through a medicine cabinet until she finds a bottle of prescription medication and downs it. Several hours later, Karen comes across her and screams for help.

Answer: He turns around and runs away

In one of the more hilarious scenes of this episode, Nick and Brian are in the middle of snarling at each other. Tensions are high, and Nick steps forward. Brian suddenly and unexpectedly tries to flee into the house, only to be tackled in the foyer. Tripp walks in to see the two wrestling on the floor, but the tableau is interrupted when Karen frantically calls for a doctor.

Answer: To break up with his lover

After the anniversary party, Nick tells Tripp that he quits. Nevertheless, as Nick is leaving the party, Patrick asks Nick to get into his car because there is a "matter of life and death." Nick reluctantly agrees, but is angered to discover that Patrick merely needs to end things with his transvestite lover Carmelita and doesn't have the courage to do it. Nick lectures Patrick about responsibility, at which point Patrick agrees to break it off with Carmelita personally.

A later scene shows that Patrick changed his mind about the break-up.

Answer: "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" - Juliet

Nick asks his assistant Daisy to program the Darlings' phone numbers into his phone, and she creates a ring tone for each Darling that suits their personalities. Jeremy's crazy exploits definitely match "Born to Be Wild," while Brian's "Hallelujah" matches his religious persona (and is nicely ironic, as Nick would never rejoice that Brian is calling). Finally, Karen's "Pretty Woman" gets Nick into some hot water with his wife, who is concerned about his relationship with Karen after walking in on them in a semi-compromising situation.

Answer: Dutch may have been murdered

Karen asks Nick to meet up with her, where she reveals that Brian has paid $10,000 (and promised $90,000 more) to the mechanic who worked on Dutch's plane. Brian has always been a vocal opponent of Dutch's 'insinuation' within the Darling family, so Nick's suspicions are aroused. Karen does not mention loving Nick or an affair with Dutch in this conversation, and she is most likely unaware of Brian's son's existence (although Nick has known since his earlier meeting with Brian). Additionally, Karen drops the bombshell that Dutch and Letitia had been having an affair for over forty years.

This is even more alarming, because it would give Tripp a very good reason to want Dutch out of the picture. Nick quickly reverses his earlier decision to quit, in the hope that he will learn more about his father's death.

He ends the episode with a vow of revenge on his father's killer.
