Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nick continues to search for answers about his father's murder. Tripp gives him the name of a private investigator that Dutch often employed. What is the name of the investigator?

Answer: Harold Templeton

Nick went to the police with his suspicions about Simon Elder, and was blown off. Therefore, in this episode, Nick takes Tripp up on his offer to help investigate Dutch's murder. Tripp supplies Nick with Harold Templeton's name, and informs Nick that Templeton is a retired spy who served England, France, and China at various points in his career. Tripp claims ignorance about where Templeton is located, but instructs Nick to go to a vineyard in Italy, as Dutch used to do when he required Templeton's services.
2. This episode's title, "The Chiavennasca," describes an item that plays an important role throughout the episode. What is Chiavennasca, in the context of this episode?

Answer: All of the answers are correct

Chiavennasca is a type of wine grape, on the most basic level. In this episode, the word refers to the wine made from this grape. Nick orders a glass of 'slightly chilled' Chiavennasca when he arrives at the vineyard, which is a coded message requesting a meeting with Templeton. Tripp also requests that Nick bring him back a bottle from Italy, ostensibly for the more mundane purpose of drinking it.
3. Jeremy rents out the Angelika Film Center as a gift for Juliet. Which of the following is NOT a reason he does this?

Answer: To help her get the lead in a new film

Natalie invites Jeremy to the opening of some swanky new club, and he agrees to come. Not long afterwards, Juliet comes flouncing into his room with a birthday present for him - she has rented out a planetarium for his use. Jeremy seems excited by his gift, but replies that he doesn't have one for her in return because their birthday is still three weeks away. Juliet breezily says that she already knows what she wants from him for her birthday: his companionship at the same club opening that he is already attending with Natalie. Couched as a birthday request, Jeremy can't refuse, so he rents out the Angelika for Juliet for the night of the club opening. Juliet insists on the club, however, so Jeremy breaks his date with Natalie.
4. Back at the rectory, Brian Jr. emphatically declares that he is not planning to attend school anymore. What is the cause of Brian Jr.'s fear?

Answer: A female bully

Brian Jr. is sporting a black eye, so it's immediately clear that his fear is of the physical variety. He admits that a bully hit him, and Brian suggests that his son find the bully's weakness and hit back (using a hilarious 'David and Goliath' allegory). We later meet the bully, a red-headed girl. Brian Jr. puts up with her bullying that day, but when Brian comes to pick him up, Brian Jr. says that he will reveal Brian's secret to his wife if Brian does not take care of the bully. Brian is reluctantly impressed with Brian Jr.'s underhanded tactics, and has a conversation with the bully in which he promises divine retribution for her behavior. Judging from her terrified face, Brian Jr. no longer needs to worry about her.
5. After Letitia confronts Tripp about the affair, who does Tripp turn to for information about Letitia's affair and the paternity of the Darling children?

Answer: Letitia's gynecologist

Early in the episode, we see that Letitia has finally admitted the truth about her longstanding relationship with Dutch. Tripp is hurt and angry, as one would expect, and asks Letitia if any of the Darling children were fathered by Dutch. Letitia quickly reassures him that all the children are Tripp's, but the speed with which she answered wounds him more (proving the subject was something she'd considered at length). We then see Tripp talking to a man about some paintings the man has purchased that are forgeries.

The man, Peter, stands to lose a lot of money if the fraud is revealed, and Tripp reassures him that the secret is safe. This seemingly irrelevant conversation gains new meaning when it becomes apparent that Tripp is setting up the man for a quid pro quo: art forgery secrets for Darling paternity secrets. Tripp asks Peter, who is Letitia's gynecologist, to find out who the children's father is.
6. Nick takes Lisa to Italy with him for a romantic getaway. Much to their dismay, Karen and Freddy decide to join them for the trip. What secret does Karen tell Lisa that makes Lisa furious with Nick?

Answer: That Nick proposed to Karen when they were nineteen

Lisa is aware that Nick and Karen were in a relationship when they were younger, so this knowledge does not surprise her. However, the romantic history and Karen's obvious 'admiration' for Nick provokes Lisa's jealousy. While at the vineyard, Karen and Lisa become very intoxicated and begin to take swipes at each other. Freddy tries to defuse the situation, but is unsuccessful.

When Nick returns from meeting with Templeton, Karen blurts out that Nick proposed to her (at the age of nineteen). Lisa leaves the table, and later she tears into Nick for not telling her sooner. Karen apologizes for her 'mistake' but Lisa will have none of it.

The tentative truce Lisa kept up is now completely over, and Lisa warns Karen to stay away from Nick.
7. Peter comes through with the paternity results, and gives Tripp the report. Is Tripp the father of all five Darling children?

Answer: No

Tripp confronts Letitia with the news that he has had a paternity test done on the children. Tripp has not yet read the report, but Peter revealed that one of the Darling children was not fathered by Tripp. Tripp wants to hear the truth from Letitia, so he hands her the report saying he won't open it.

He then lays down an ultimatum: either tell Tripp which child isn't his or leave the family. Letitia appears to concede, but we do not find out the identity of the illegitimate Darling in this episode.
8. Every member of the Darling clan experiences a notable trial or tribulation in this episode, except one. Which of the Darling children does not have a major storyline during the course of this episode?

Answer: Patrick

Patrick does appear in this episode, but only at a family dinner. He teases Brian about being constantly beaten up during his schooldays, but does not confront any personal demons in this episode. Since he has plenty of demons, however, this will probably not become a trend. Jeremy and Juliet battle over Jeremy's relationship with Natalie, Tripp and Letitia deal with the truth of Letitia's infidelity, Karen purposefully riles Lisa, and Brian helps his child overcome a bully while strengthening a bond.
9. In the midst of all the fighting with Juliet, a new development occurs in Natalie and Jeremy's relationship. What secret does Natalie reveal to Jeremy?

Answer: she's going to have a baby

Natalie and Jeremy hit some rough patches in this episode, as Jeremy is constantly thrust into the crossfire between Natalie and Juliet. When Natalie crashes Patrick's campaign speech (in the previous episode), Jeremy takes Juliet's side. However, when Juliet tries to throw Natalie out of Jeremy's room, Jeremy decides in favor of Natalie.

In an effort of explain himself to Juliet, he tells her that he has real feelings for Natalie, an admission of which Juliet is very skeptical. Jeremy then tells Natalie the same thing when stargazing.

She is surprised, but returns the sentiment. She announces that she's pregnant (which might have been surprising if she hadn't been sick to her stomach throughout the entire episode), and Jeremy takes the news well.
10. Who appears in the final scene and orders Nick into his car for a 'discussion'?

Answer: Simon Elder

Simon Elder's car pulls up beside Nick as he is walking home, and Nick meets the "technophilanthropist" for the first time. Simon's invitation to talk is issued in a very Tripp-like fashion, and Nick gets into the car. As the car pulls away, the license plate is revealed to read the letter "C." Based on the information in Dutch's planner and what Harold Templeton has told him, Nick has come to the conclusion that Dutch was working for someone identified only by the letter "C." Therefore, it seems likely that Elder has quite a few of the answers that Nick is seeking.
