The show was actually created in the UK, which began airing on ITV in 2004. Ramsay only appeared in the first season of "Hell's Kitchen" in the UK, but began the U.S. version in 2005. Ramsay has also taken part in the U.S. version of the show "MasterChef" as co-producer and co-host.

The U.S. version of "What Not to Wear" began airing on TLC in 2003. During the first season, Stacy's co-host was Wayne Scot Lukas, but he was replaced by Clinton Kelly in season two. Though some men have appeared on the show in the past, the makeovers weren't spectacular, so the show decided to stick with all women.

The women appearing for the makeover are usually nominated by a friend or family member because of their poor fashion choices. If they agree to be on the show, they are taken to New York and given $5,000 for a new wardrobe, in addition to having their hair and makeup styled to complete the makeover.

Duff Goldman began Charm City Cakes at his house in 2000, and is known for his unusual cooking utensils, such as blow torches. He and his brother wrote a book about the show and the bakery entitled "Ace of Cakes: Inside the World of Charm City Cakes".

The goal of the show was to make the participants look at least ten years younger, especially since they looked older than their actual age. After having 100 people guess the participant's age at the beginning of the show, the crew would then try and make the participant look ten years younger than the average age guessed by the crowd.

The participant was given a dental, cosmetic, and dermatological makeover, which included procedures like teeth whitening or veneers, Botox, facial peels, and new hair styles and makeup.

After the makeover, they would put the participant back in the clear box to see if they had reached their goal.

The first season showed chef Marc Thuet, along with his wife Bianca, opening a restaurant named Conviction in Toronto and giving jobs to rehabilitated ex-cons. The second season took a restaurant in Vancouver, named Delilah's, and turned it into the new Conviction Kitchen temporarily.
