1. To test the designers on the basics, what was the garment of choice designed in the first week of the L.A.-based competition?

For the first time in the series, the designers brought together for "Project Runway" were met by Heidi and Tim in Los Angeles, the setting for the show this season. For their first task, the sixteen designers settled in and met Tim Gunn on the red carpet for the Emmys; they had to make a gown to wear for an awards ceremony. With Lindsay Lohan as their guest judge, the designers brought their A-game and met their new models. After the first judging, avant-garde designer Ari Fish went home for, essentially, opting to make a garment that definitely wasn't a dress.

For their first challenge, the sixteen designers departed from their new residence at Atlas New York and followed Tim Gunn to a grocery store, Gristedes, to meet their guest judge, season one contestant Austin Scarlett. For this task, they had to emulate the designers from the first season's first task by purchasing all of their materials and thinking out of the box with $75. Kelli won by dying and bleaching coffee filters and vacuum bags while many other contestants used very obvious material choices to make their garments (eg. tablecloths, shower curtains). Jerry Tam was eliminated for his shower curtain jacket. In the following week, the designers used green, naturally made fabrics to make their outfits, but their models (also the clients of their prospective cocktail dresses) got to pick the fabrics alone.

In the first week of the competition, fifteen designers checked into their new apartments in the Atlas building in New York City's fashion district. Upon their arrival, they were told by Heidi and Tim that their first challenge would begin immediately. They would need to return to their apartments and, in fifteen minutes, take their materials from what they found there-- anything. Keith Michael won the challenge by adapting a curtain into a simple dress while Stacey Estrella was the first cut for ruining a shower curtain.

To begin season two, the pool of designers was increased to sixteen and the stakes were raised to include several new prizes. In the week before their arrival in New York City, the selected designers were sent a box containing six yards of muslin and a $20 bill with which they could purchase anything they needed to make their outfit reflect their personal styles. Upon arriving at the runway, they were given two hours and preselected models to show the clothes and, based on the designs, two would be sent home. These two were John Wade and Heidi Standridge, the former of whom the judges decided didn't have the drive and the latter of whom the judges didn't think had the skill.

For this challenge, the designers had to form garments around models posing as pregnant (with fake stomach pads). With two days to make the garment, it was Malvin Vien who went home on a design he referred to as 'a chicken giving birth to an egg'. You can imagine.

In week two the designers were surprised to meet with Sarah Jessica Parker who arrived to inform them that they would be working in teams of two to design affordable outfits for her 'Bitten' line which would need to be made on $15 or less but sell for $40. Victorya Hong's simple design was deemed simplistic and versatile and she ended up winning (with partner Kevin Christiana). Her outfit was added to the line. Marion Lee's outfit, which looked more like a burlap sack, ended up getting him eliminated. His partner, Steven Rosengard, was spared.

During the second week of the competition, the designers paired up to create lavish evening gowns for none other than Miss U.S.A. 2006, Tara Conner, who needed an outfit for that portion of her upcoming Miss Universe pageant. The winning dress was from Kayne Gillaspie, an unsurprising selection since he came into the competition as a pageant designer. The losing dress was by Malan Breton, who was cut. In week three, the designers were informed that they would be working with dogs to design an garment (and the story behind it) for their supposed owners as well as matching outfits for the dog itself. Uli Herzner's was determined to be the winner while Katherine Gerdes, a snowboard instructor from Minnesota, made too simple a dress for the judges and was sent home.

Heading out to the club after getting accepted to the show, the designers were told to dress up. Little did they know, their outfits would be the basis of the next challenge the following day-- all of them had to create a new outfit by re-purposing the outfits they wore. Chloe Dao, who reconstructed her blue jersey dress into a more chic outfit, ended up walking away with the win. Her roommate, Kirsten Ehrig, ended up getting cut because she seemed not to want the win enough to use all of the clothes on her back. She brought with her a scarf owned by her deceased grandmother and refused to incorporate it into the design.

On the second week of the competition, the designers got up close and personal with "Project Runway's" sponsoring fabric: cotton. With fifty dollars and all the cotton jersey fabric they needed, designers had to evoke 'envy' in their design. In addition to this, the designers had their pieces placed into a silent auction at 30Vandam and the highest bid would result in the name of the person who would be granted immunity the following week. Kara Saun's dress, which sold for $405, resulted in the win. Meanwhile, Mario Cadenas was sent home for taking in the lowest bid.

"Deconstructionism" was the technique - since the designers were working in a neutral palette, the vintage clothes were chosen primarily for texture. There were supposed to be muslin "pods" which were to be worn as overcoats, tying each garment to the theme. With time at a premium, this element was eliminated - causing the judges to question the unity of the collection.

Week four was punctuated by the elimination of two designers, the first being Keith Michael who was disqualified from the competition when he was found to not only be in possession of fashion books (which are against the rules of the show) but for leaving the set for a prolonged time. This put a small wrench in things as the task this week involved working in teams of three to design an outfit for Macy's INC line to be sold for under $100. His teammates, still seeing his vision through, came in second place to Angela Keslar's winning design. Bonnie Dominguez was cut for missing the mark on a companion piece for the existing line.

Answer: Barbie & Barbie Doll

Taking a trip to Toys 'R' Us, the designers were told that their challenge for this week would involve creating both wearable life-size versions of outfits for a Barbie doll (and their models, dressed in blonde wigs) to match the rest of the My Scene Barbie collection. Nick Verreos won this challenge with a hippie-styled Barbie which the judges felt, in model form, looked exactly like a living Barbie. His design was later incorporated into the line with his name and photo on the box. Raymundo Baltazar's design, claimed by the judges to look like a matronly woman instead of a surfer chick, got him cut.

In week three, the designers headed to Banana Republic's design studio to learn about the upcoming fashions for the company, specifically their colour stories involving rose colours and art deco inspirations. The designers were then told to make an evening gown dedicated to one of the two collections. As they ended up making the dresses they were also informed that the winning design would be added to the collection, available for purchase and manufactured for Banana Republic stores and online services. Wendy Pepper made the winning garment while Starr, who combined the two styles to poor reviews, was cut.
