Running back out, the wolf turns to see Bugs with a flashlight and train whistle. He turns and chases Bugs back in again. The tunnel is again filled with light, but this time the wolf stands his ground, only to be run over by a train. Obviously a reference to fellow Looney Tunes director Charles M. Jones, "Charley" goes from fully relaxed to total terror when his wife begins yelling at him.

Charming domestic scene. Apparently he isn't far enough away. Or maybe she knows him better than he thought. Anyway, he charges away looking for a rabbit.

The running joke through this cartoon is that any time the wolf is distracted, he stops and tries to remember what he's chasing. "A squirrel? No. Woodchuck? No." One of the most loveable characters in cartoons, and he only stars once.

But the wolf still has time pull out his watch and check the time before holding the grenade at arms length and grimacing before it goes off. It would seem Bugs Bunny might have dealt with Charles M. Wolf before.

A very funny scene, played out many times in many different ways in cartoons.
This is the best response to being hit by a train, mostly because of the wolf's personality.

A very stunned, stupid look on the wolf's face makes this scene a classic. The scene then changes to the next one, with a more angry wolf in each. But he still can't remember what he's chasing.

Bugs Bunny has another trap in store for the wolf. Of course, Bugs doesn't actually instigate any of this. Charles M. Wolf gets himself into these predicaments because of his anger or curiosity. Or stupidity.

"What do I want? Why, I want a...possum? No. Chipmunk? No." Another simple question completely distracts the wolf. But this time Bugs doesn't help the wolf out.

Answer: hippopotamus

"A zebra? No. Orangutan? No. A hippopotamus? Ha ha hee hee no, not a hippopotamus." Classic Looney Tunes ending with Bugs Bunny taking his candle into his hole for the night saying, "Well, goodnight folks, we're running out of time." I wonder what Mrs. Wolf thinks when Charley doesn't come home for the night? Or maybe she wants to get him out of the cave and sends him off on purpose.
