Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Julia Jayne go when she went missing from Brightcliffe for a week?

Answer: To seek out Aceso

In 1968, Julia Jayne leaves Brightcliffe and hitchhikes until she reaches Regina Ballard's house. Formerly known as Aceso, Ballard was one of the only people to survive the Paragon ritual before Brightcliffe was purchased to become a hospice. With the 'Paragon Diary' in-hand, Julia asks to chat.

The diary belonged to Aceso's daughter, then known as Athena, and it contains useful information, but the two no longer speak. Julia indicates that she found the basement chamber as well. The worry, at least for Julia, is that she's very sick and unlikely to live, but Regina might hold the key to healing her.

Regina says that she always wanted her daughter to carry on her teachings, but she was corrupted. Julia, however, still seems to have some light in her eyes. It all comes down to what she's willing to do. If she's willing to give the gods and goddesses what they want, they will help her.

Regina gives her a week to teach her all she knows, but then she will need to go back to Brightcliffe. She will need to get a nightgown and walk back through the woods to get muddy and then when she gets back she'll need to tell a story that hides where she's been.

In the basement of Brightcliffe, back in the mid-1990s, Dr. Stanton watches as Shasta's 'sisters' choke on their poison. As Shasta escapes up the elevator, Dr. Stanton starts performing CPR on the others, enlisting Ilonka to help when she regains consciousness.
2. Who claims that they've started seeing the shadow of something coming closer in their periphery?

Answer: Amesh

After the women of the ritual are taken by the paramedics, Dr. Stanton and Ilonka chat in the former's office. The good news is that the women will be stable after having their stomachs pumped and that's thanks to Ilonka's help, but on the same token they wouldn't have been in the basement had Ilonka not been involved. Shasta had been arrested, she says, three times in the past for her attempts to regain entry to the basement, and that Ilonka would view her as a friend shows disrespect. Ilonka, however, argues that she came to Brightcliffe because of Julia Jayne's story; Julia beat her cancer. But Dr. Stanton believes Julia was just lucky.

Considering the break-ins and the poisoning, Dr. Stanton wagers that Shasta is sick again. Whatever she magic she gained in 1968 wore off so she's at it again, taking another page from the Paragon handbook in desperation. Ilonka begs Dr. Stanton not to tell the others of what happened and lets Dr. Stanton know that when her dad arrives for Family Day, she'll be going home with him.

In Natsuki's room, Natsuki wakes up to find Amesh already awake, struggling to manage his motor skills. Amesh notes that his vision is starting to go as well-- it's a spot on his side that he can see in his periphery and it's moving closer and closer. Sometimes it looks like a person or a shape, but it's there.
3. Cheri joins Spence in the dining hall for Family Day and ends up telling which of these to his parents?

Answer: That they're engaged

Before the next Family Day commences, Sandra's bags are taken to a car and loaded in. One by one, she says her goodbyes to the other patients and Dr. Stanton, embracing all of them and promising she'll see them again. Taking one last look at everyone, she tells them she doesn't want to go but she gets into the backseat and heads away.

Ilonka heads back to her room as soon as Sandra leaves and she starts packing her things as Family Day commences. Amesh's aunt lets him know that the paperwork is finally coming through; he'll be able to bring his parents to Brightcliffe and they can meet Natsuki. Cheri joins Spence at his table as both of his parents stop by for a visit, his mother taking her first step towards making amends. Cheri, making up one of her stories, tells his parents they're engaged.
4. Ilonka meets Rhett, Anya's ex-boyfriend, and hands over her belongings. Amongst them is a ballerina figurine which, to their surprise, is in what state?

Answer: Repaired

Ilonka finishes packing her room just as Mark knocks on the door and, to her surprise, along with him is Rhett, a close friend of Anya's. Rhett came to pick up her belongings; Mark leaves him with Ilonka to chat since she's comfortable with it. In fact, she tried to call him before Anya's funeral, but it seemed his number was disconnected. The only reason he managed to find out about her passing was the obituary that Ilonka wrote for her.

Ilonka says that Anya took full responsibility for their falling out, but she really did love Rhett. She goes to Anya's belongings intending to give them over to Rhett to bring with him, but she finds something shocking-- the broken ballerina figurine that Anya kept in her nightstand seems to be repaired. As she looks closer at it, Rhett notes it broke a long time ago, but this one looks like a new statue. Ilonka remarks that Anya fixed it.
5. Kevin decides to bring an end to his story, 'The Wicked Heart', but he does not do so for the Midnight Club.

Answer: False

As Ilonka heads downstairs to attend Family Day she finds her foster dad, Tim, who's been waiting to talk with her and Dr. Stanton. Heading up to her room first, however, Ilonka speaks to her father about filling out her pre-need together even though he doesn't feel quite ready.

Outside, Kevin sits on the bench overlooking the water. It's where Katherine finds him and takes a seat beside him, watching the sun go down. He tells her they need to talk and the discussion almost goes unsaid. She recognizes almost immediately that it's the end of the road for them. What Ilonka said to Katherine was wrong, but it doesn't mean she wasn't right. He needs to let Katherine go on with her life. As they hold hands they look out at the water.

That night at 12:24am, five patients sit around the table. They wait in case Ilonka might show up, but they consider packing some of the chairs away. There will always be more people, however. Kevin says the club's incantation before they all take a drink and he lets them know it's time to bring his story to its end-- finally-- with the conclusion of 'The Wicked Heart'. Ilonka is lucky to make it in just as he begins.
6. Sheila discovers that Dusty is the killed in 'The Wicked Heart' when she meets him where?

Answer: At his house

Dusty always knew it was coming, Kevin says. The voices in Dusty's head told him that the next victim would be Sheila. He knows what he has to do, and picking up the phone next to his bed he phones her and tells her to come over. She says she'll be over in twenty.

When Sheila arrives she lets herself into the house; the door is unlocked. She walks quietly through the home, looking at the pictures along the walls in the hall until she finds one with the hourglass symbol from the killer's calling card. Dusty finds her there and tells her he knows who killed Nancy; they have to stop them.

Bringing Sheila to his room, he shows her the conversation on the Einstein chat board that Nancy had with the killer, LEDZEPPEFAN, who he tells her is his grandfather. While Sheila has her eyes on the screen, Kevin grabs a hammer and tells her that his mother was the killer as well. As he winds up the swing, he reveals that it's run in the family.

But as Dusty brings the hammer down he stops himself, fighting back against the ghosts. His mother crawls into the room on the ceiling, leaping at him to take the hammer, but it results in Sheila picking the weapon up herself and hitting her in the head with it. As Dusty's mother dies on the floor, she says she loves him.
7. 'The Wicked Heart' ends with Dusty in what circumstance?

Answer: Locked away

The other girls, the victims, appear to Dusty and Sheila as well and Sheila is given the opportunity to say goodbye to her missing friend before she and the others rise into the light and disappear.

Dusty says that he doesn't know how it started, but when his grandfather got too old to lift the hammer, whatever possessed him moved into her. Then, when his mother had her stroke, it passed into him. Sheila suggests that Dusty didn't know what he was doing and that he had no choice, but he tells her he did.

Dusty's mother jerks thrashes on the floor as a green fog emanates from her mouth, pouring from her and into him. Once it stops, he picks the hammer up off the ground and turns to face Sheila once again. At last, the devilish being inside has a young, strong body. Dusty fights back, however, thrusting the claw of the hammer into his own chest before handing the weapon over to Sheila. He tells her to swing hard and she does.

Sheila didn't kill Dusty, but she did incapacitate him for long enough to be able to have the police arrive, and when the story came out, he was found guilty for the murders by reason of insanity. They would find dozens of bodies buried in a cave outside town, some from before his grandfather's time. He would never hurt another girl ever again.

Kevin says that's it. His story is complete. They don't need to stay alive to hear the rest. Ilonka says she doesn't quite like the ending, but she didn't finish her story either.
8. In order to heal Scottie at the end of Ilonka's 'Witch' story, Imani must do what, according to her mother?

Answer: Die

As she has yet to finish 'Witch', Ilonka trades seats with Kevin and commits to finishing her story, resuming with the fact that Imani is a witch and where the story left off, she scried at night and had a vision of the future. She met the boy from her vision and stopped his death, but at great cost to her friend as she died in his place. When Imani stopped in at a gas station, the boy she liked was later shot; the universe snapped back into place by righting the wrong she'd created.

Imani tried to change the future, but it's just as set as the past. As Ben dies in the operating room, Imani checks in on Scottie, still in a coma, and realizes she could possibly fix a mistake. Using the powers inherited from her mother, Imani uses her abilities and meets with her, deep in a wooded plane. Her mother brings her to the scrying pond and explains that she's taken a step out of life just as she has taken a step towards life so that they can meet.

Imani's mother explains that Imani can not heal Scottie alone. No one can bring back the dead without righting the universe, and that means that if Imani tries, she will die in Scottie's place. Imani's mind is made up, however. Her mother says she'll wait for her in the woods, but first she will help heal her friend, and after she bestows power upon her, Imani jumps into the pond.
9. Who is the first to help Ilonka complete her 'Witch' story?

Answer: Cheri

As Imani reemerges into Scottie's hospital room, she uses her mother's healing powers to hold tight to her and Scottie's lives. Scottie, still barely tethered to her life, happily tells Imani that it's okay and it's not her fault, but the more she waits and watches her life fade away, the more she realizes that it's okay to let go.

Imani came for a reason, however. She tells Scottie to take her life tether; she hopes to go dance with the fireflies. If Scottie can recall their conversation when she wakes up, then Ilonka hopes that she'll remember her.

Ilonka realizes the story is too emotional for her to finish and stops herself, but when she does, Cheri picks up where she left off, saying that Scottie opens her eyes, finding Imani with her. Scottie's memories from the other side already start to fade away, but she insists on accompanying Imani's body to the morgue, knowing she should stay with her friend. The funeral is huge, but none of it feels quite right to her friends, who honour her in their own way.

Amesh takes the reins from Cheri, suggesting that Imani's friends build a memorial for her and Ben, leaving keepsakes for them. And also, Luke and Becky, both from his story, are there too-- even though Becky died. But it's not about them.

Natsuki says that Scottie did one more thing for her friend, knowing she'd want to be one place more than anywhere. Her ashes would be cast into the pond. The others watch as they create a window into the great beyond and they watch her there, amongst the fireflies.

Ilonka takes the story back into her hands to say that Imani didn't feel dead wherever she was, and she wasn't alone. And there were many faces in the woods that she never met, but she would know in her heart. None of her friends would know if what they saw was real, but if it was a dream, it was a dream they all shared. And nothing is more real than that.
10. Dr. Stanton bears an hourglass tattoo on what body part?

Answer: Neck

After Ilonka's story ends, she tells the others the truth; last night she did something very wrong. But first, she informs them that she was visited by Rhett, and when he came into the room and they looked through her things, they saw the mended statue of the ballerina. The others listen, enraptured.

As the Midnight Club leaves the library, Kevin asks Ilonka if she wants to take the long way back through the building to go to bed. He jokes that she didn't like the ending to his story, but she says that he was a little hard on Dusty; he didn't need to suffer alone. Kevin explains that Dusty had to, otherwise he'd hurt the people he cares about.

Kevin admits that he broke up with Katherine though he acknowledges it was the right thing to do. There's someone else though, and he can't lie about that anymore. Even though Ilonka did a bad thing at Brightcliffe, she did it out of hope. Now, knowing about Anya's statue, they know that Ilonka was right to hope. They may both expect to die, but that's a bad reason not to live.

Elsewhere in the building, Dr. Stanton locks the front door to Brightcliffe and heads to her apartment. Taking off her wig and sitting in front of the vanity, she looks into the mirror at her reflection, an image that does not reveal the hourglass tattoo on the back of her neck.
