Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Anya awakens from her startling dream, she finds Ilonka making what kind of tea?

Answer: Essiac

Anya awakens abruptly in the morning to a dream of a shadowy figure in the empty library. Ilonka is already awake and at her desk, preparing essiac tea. She gathers some printouts from inside the desk and finds a locket tucked away inside, but Anya asks her to hand it over.

Dr. Stanton brings Ilonka into her office and hands her a thorough booklet of forms, all about her burial preferences, funeral wants, and expectations for when she passes on. It's not about liability, she explains, but agency. She wants to help the patients get what they feel they deserve in their final days.

What Ilonka really wants, however, is a look at old patient files. When she brings up Julia Jayne, Dr. Stanton claims not to know too much about her, but it's besides the point as patient files are confidential. Worse, Ilonka brings up the group who owned Brightcliff before Dr. Stanton-- a cult group known only as The Paragon. The doctor doesn't have answers to this, however. Instead, she bids her farewell and promises to see her at group therapy.
2. At group therapy, what question does Dr. Stanton ask of the patients?

Answer: What are you grieving?

Leaving Dr. Stanton's office, Ilonka runs into Kevin as he walks through the hall. He realizes that she has her pre-need papers and jokes about his music revisions (five or six changes!), but Ilonka is a bit nervous, having felt she overshared the night before at her first Midnight Club gathering. She asserts that she's a smart person; she doesn't want to sound stupid for her aims at Brightcliffe. He just reminds her to come to the Midnight Club in the evening regardless.

Natsuki reads a book in the hallway to one of the treatment rooms, speaking to Tristan while they wait for Nurse Mark to check in. When he arrives, Natsuki asks him to squeeze her hand for her.

At group therapy, Amesh worries about the new video game consoles he won't get to play since they're expected to come out after he dies. He knows he's supposed to mourn a bit more, but it's what's on his mind. Cheri grieves over the pets that she'll never get to see again, even if she seems to be making up the truth about the animals she owned. Ilonka has a bit of nervous hesitation in group therapy and struggles to join in, but Anya pushes her in with force, grieving over the way her room used to smell before the essiac tea.
3. Ilonka meets Shasta when the two of them cross paths in the woods. Both of them are there to collect which of these?

Answer: Spring water

The group therapy session comes to a head when Anya goes off about her former roommates, their awful remedies, and the smell of essiac tea, and it's why, when they return to their room, Ilonka throws out her stash of ingredients. Ilonka calls Anya out for her attitude and expresses her regret for just trying to get to know her before leaving the building for the day.

Ilonka, instead, heads out into the woods for the afternoon, walking the trails into the lush, green wilderness until she finds a small stream. A woman, hiking up the trail from the other direction, spots her and stops for a chat while Ilonka bottles spring water. She introduces herself as Shasta and comments that Ilonka must've heard about the spring's unique properties. She lives about a mile off the property and she, similarly, is sneaking over the property line for the water. There's something special about it, she claims. It, and the healing vortex they're in, if Ilonka believes in it, are unique.

As both Ilonka and Shasta part ways, Ilonka picks chamomile from the bushes on the way home. As she walks by the path, she sees a tree with an odd marking,
4. Who cuts themselves while chopping paper to make origami cranes?

Answer: Spence

While Kevin talks on the phone with his brother and lies about how he's feeling, Spencer watches on from his desk. Anya comes in unannounced, asking after morphine, but the guys won't give it to her on account of her attitude towards Ilonka at group therapy. Kevin reasons that Ilonka told them all a story about a girl who got out of Briarcliffe and Anya probably wanted to punish her for the other part of her that wanted to believe it.

In the activities room, while Cheri practices the cello, the others fold origami cranes. Amesh, claiming it to be an activity he wanted to do before he died (or at least since Natsuki brought it up), was led to believe that anyone who could fold one thousand paper cranes could be granted a wish.

While the patients fold, Spence cuts more paper and accidentally slices his hand, bleeding everywhere and heading quickly to the nurse's office. Ilonka wonders why everyone is so worried by the sight of blood, but the others explain Spence is in Brightcliffe because he has AIDS. Anya in particular leans into Ilonka before leaving. When Anya departs, the others justify her bad mood with how long she's been at Brightcliffe; she'll be nicer when she actually warms up.
5. Who, according to Dr. Stanton, reminds her of herself, only tougher?

Answer: Anya

Spence ends up in the infirmary where Nurse Mark applies an anaesthetic and commences stitch-work on the injured finger. Mark tries to put Spence at ease, reminding him that no one is going to get infected as a result of the cut; everything is sterilized to protect him. In the meantime, he insists-- Spence has to see "Interview with the Vampire".

When Dr. Stanton stops by Anya and Ilonka's room, Anya hands over the pendant Ilonka found in her desk, intending it to head back to Rachel's family. Before Dr. Stanton leaves, however, she speaks a bit on how her son could get under her skin very easily. He was stubborn and convicted, like her, and it seems like she has someone like that in Brightcliffe at the moment-- Anya-- only Anya's tougher.

When Dr. Stanton leaves the room, Anya hears an out-of-sort whisper and creaking from the bathroom. As she turns to look into the darkness, a pair of eyes glance back at her and disappear the second she looks away..
6. Who tells the story of 'The Two Danas' at The Midnight Club?

Answer: Anya

The patients awaken to their alarms only minutes to midnight and they prepare to head down to the library. Ilonka, hearing that Anya is already awake, throwing up in the bathroom, knocks on the door, but Anya claims she'll meet her downstairs.

In the library, Ilonka tells the others about Shasta as she pours from a pitcher of chamomile tea. Since it's Ilonka's first official meeting they brief her on the custom. First, they raise a glass of whatever they choose to drink, then they recite their credo.

Tonight, Anya takes the storyteller position and moves to the head of the table to sit before the fire. She tells the others that her story is about a girl with stars in her eyes; a girl who wanted to be anybody but herself. The title of her story is 'The Two Danas'.
7. In the 'Two Danas' story, to what did Dana's have a scholarship?

Answer: Dancing

According to Anya, Dana was perfect. She was the perfect dancer, the perfect daughter, the perfect friend, and the perfect girl. She grew up in County Kildare in Ireland and got a scholarship to the American Ballet Academy and moved to the States. Her best friend, Bill, worried about Dana because her need to be perfect was causing problems. The truth was, she never wanted to be perfect, but the expectation held for her caused her to miss out on a lot in her life.

Every night, Dana would pray to God that her prayers be fulfilled, but one night, it wasn't God that answered, but the Devil, emerging from the darkness to greet her. The Devil told Dana that it seemed like someone was trapped behind her eyes, begging to get out, and Dana agreed; she felt constrained. The Devil said they could make a second version of her-- one who could be the perfect girl and the other, who could have the sex, drugs, and rock and roll she wanted; it was a perfect double and she could have both at the same time.

Once the doubling was done, the Devil said however, it couldn't be undone. There was no catch otherwise. When Dana looked into her eyes, she didn't see a lie hidden within. They shook hands and the deal was done.
8. Which of the Two Danas, per the story, was the troublesome one?

Answer: Dana Two

When Dana looked into her mirror, the doubling began and her own reflection separated its actions from hers, emerging from behind the furniture into reality. It was like being in two places at once, both Danas realized, and since they shared thoughts, it was like they experienced everything in duplicate. While Dana One stayed home, Dana Two went out to a rave, taking a pager on Dana One's insistence, just in case of any emergency.

That night, Dana Two partied and Dana One, still at home in her bed, felt every sensation from the music to the dancing to the drugs. Dana Two met a musician that night and she decided to go with him to the big city. Dana One, however, remained at home.

The real problem occurred when Dana One had her big audition to become principal dancer in her school performance. Though she told Dana Two to hold off, Dana Two was in the midst of forming a hard drug habit. When Dana One broke her ankle onstage, it put a quick end to the career.
9. Do any of the Danas survive at the end of the 'Two Danas' story?

Answer: Yes

Though Dana One reached out to Dana Two by pager to signify the emergency at hand, Dana's strung-out doppelgänger couldn't begin to pay attention to her originator's needs. Bill, sitting next to her beside, called her out for lying to him about something she could never explain, but their discussion dissolved when Dana Two, suffering a nightmarish bad trip, let her high seep into Dana One's waking life.

Dana Two would end up drowning Dana One out entirely, and it meant the Dana One would have to up the ante. To do that, she started committing self-harm, cutting herself to get the message across and even stabbing through her own hand. Eventually, Dana Two called Dana One, but not to solve the issue. Instead, the Danas were at a stalemate, with neither able to convince the other to stop causing damage. While Dana Two ended up homeless and addicted, Dana One fared unwell at home.

That night, Dana grabbed her father's car keys and a gun and faced her double one-on-one. Both of them believed themselves to be the original Dana and both fired their guns at the same time...

...but one of them woke up in the hospital missing a leg and with the Devil at their side. The Devil asked Dana which of the two she was, and neither of them could give an honest answer. What could be said, though, was that there was no going back.

As Anya finishes the story, she says that Dana dreamed about the Devil every night and woke up wondering which one was left in her body. The other Dana, she knew, died that night and went to Hell. After all, she could feel that pain, even then, through her double.
10. Ilonka tries to break into Dr. Stanton's office using which of these?

Answer: A library card

After the meeting of the Midnight Club comes to an end (and Sandra earnestly thanks Anya for seemingly opening up through her story, even if Anya would never admit to it), Ilonka uses a library card and a screwdriver to try and break her way into Dr. Stanton's office when Kevin makes it known that he's followed her from the dormitories. Kevin is simply interested in what her plan is, indicating that it must be important, and he opens the door simply by turning the knob-- no tools needed.

In the office, Ilonka opens the files for patient records from the 1960s and finds Julia Jayne's before they depart, but as she and Kevin head back into the hall, the night nurse turns on the hall light and searches for the noises she's heard. Kevin makes a distraction, leading the nurse away, but as Ilonka turns to retreat down the hall she finds herself in a hallucination of Brightcliffe as though from another time.

As if caught in an old movie, Ilonka looks around and sees a dark shadow moving on a portrait to her left, and it grows when she reaches towards it, tearing a hole in the painting. A door at the end of the hall opens and a woman inside says that she's starving. And as Ilonka turns to run, a terrifying woman grabs her, knocking her to the ground.

The room blinks back to normal when Ilonka hits the ground and she sees Kevin standing in front of her asking what's wrong. It's hard to explain. She has no clue.
