Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ilonka performs CPR on Anya to bring her back to consciousness. What does she later discover?

Answer: Anya had a DNR order

Ilonka and Kevin find Anya sprawled on the floor next to her wheelchair and Ilonka, wasting no time, performs CPR on her roommate in an effort to bring her back. Fortunately, her efforts work, but as Anya throws up on the floor beside her, she catches a glimpse of the tall, shadowy figure in the corner and screams hysterically while the others see nothing there.

The next morning, Ilonka speaks to Dr. Stanton about the incident and discovers that Anya had a Do Not Resuscitate order. Had she known, however, she might have acted differently. Dr. Stanton says she hopes she wouldn't have since Anya was self-medicating. DNR does not mean 'Do Not Treat'; Brightcliffe isn't a place to stand by as anyone overdoses on their own medication whether it's of their agency or not.

Later, when Ilonka checks in on Anya in another room, she apologizes and checks in on her roommate. She asks about what she saw in the corner of the room and Anya pretends she didn't see anything-- no shadow; she was just high. When she leaves, Cheri catches Ilonka in the hallway and tells her she needs to be kinder to herself before measuring her head with a tape measure. It's nothing, she says before closing her door.
2. 'The Paragon Diary' appears to be written by a young woman who was given what name?

Answer: Athena

Ilonka, finally getting the time to look at the book she found in the library, notes that 'The Paragon Diary', as it was called, was written by a survivor of the Paragon Cult by the name of Athena who was sixteen when she escaped. The tragic Paragon cult was created by Regina Ballard in 1931 though she would later be known by the name Aceso; Paragon was originally created as a naturopathic alternative to traditional healing and wellness and she took her name from a goddess of healing. The cult surpassed simple prayer and proceeded into ancient ritual and blood sacrifice in the chamber beneath the building and Athena, Aceso's daughter, watched her mother's slow descent into madness.

Athena knew she had to stop her mother so she gathered the children of the house and took them into the woods to the nearest neighbour before contacting the police, but when the police went back, they couldn't find anyone...until they checked the ritual chamber. There, they found the adults of Paragon dead save for Aceso, who claimed she didn't know what she was doing; the herbs that they used for their tea were poison. Athena never believed that though.

Ilonka and Kevin discuss the book and the story while they gather firewood on the beach. Aceso dropped off the history books after the incident, so nothing more is known about her. Athena too. But Julia Jayne found the journal, hid it, and left clues to find it. She also walked out of Brightcliffe cured with that info. There's something there.
3. Cheri receives which of these as a gift for Ilonka?

Answer: A wig

Cheri receives a package at the front door to Brightcliffe and catches Ilonka as she passes through the lobby to show off what she's had delivered. Since her mother is working on a movie with famed wig maker Molly Blake, she's had something sent over express, remeasured based on the numbers she took, and it's specifically a gift for Ilonka. Opening the case, she reveals a wig made to look like Ilonka's old hair-- before the radiation therapy. Ilonka asks why she did something so nice; Cheri says it was simply because she mentioned it.

That evening, the Midnight Club heads out to the beach to celebrate Amesh's Death Day out by the fire pit. It was a day that Amesh wasn't supposed to reach; doctors told him that he wouldn't make it a year due to his glioblastoma, but that was a year ago. As Spence finishes reading the speech that Amesh asked him to, he removes his funeral suit and bows to the crowd before placing it into a hole, claiming that while his parents bought it for him to be buried in on that very day, he wouldn't be. With that done, they all party.
4. In celebration of Amesh's Death Day, the Midnight Club indulges in which of these?

Answer: Special brownies

Getting high on special brownies, the members of the Midnight Club enjoy the night by the water. Cheri brings Amesh a gift-- a brand new PlayStation, having manage to get one direct from Japan through her father. The others muse on whether or not Dr. Stanton smokes marijuana on account of the stress of her job and it gets them all thinking of outlandish possibilities; what if Stanton bakes peoples' bodies into pies or takes their souls and puts them into dolls?

After sitting around the fire, Amesh sits with Natsuki away from the group and thanks her for coming out despite the recent events. Dr. Stanton, Natsuki says, just diagnosed her with clinical depression, and with what happened with Anya, she got low again. Amesh sympathizes since, for the past week, he's worried that he wouldn't see his parents again before he dies. This aside, there's only two things he has left to do: get the girl and save the world.
5. Who, of the Midnight Club, does not attend the gathering for Amesh's story?

Answer: Anya

Ilonka continues to revisit 'The Paragon Diary', poring through its pages as she waits through the effects of the brownie she had at the party. Washing up before going to bed, she exits the bathroom to find a ghostly woman standing over Anya's bed, watching her sleep before leaving the room.

And Ilonka follows, emerging into the hallway into a vision of the past. Navigating her way to the lobby of Brightcliffe she looks at the pictures on the wall, nearly missing the figure as she leaves out the front door. Though Ilonka follows behind her, she confusingly emerges into the library to find not the woman...but Kevin. As the room materializes around her, she finds that she's arrived just in time for midnight and the meeting of the Midnight Club. Everyone else takes a seat around the table while Ilonka wonders what happened. They chalk it up to the brownie.

But none of this explains the odd events as of late. Though Ilonka saw someone standing over Anya's bed, Spence thought he heard his name over the recovery room intercom the other day. On this note, Ilonka remarks that Anya probably isn't coming to this night's meeting; the others contemplate skipping the event. Spence encourages Amesh to tell his story, however, since it's his Death Day.

And with that, Amesh starts a toast a little different from the normal credo to celebrate the day. He calls his story 'See You Later'.
6. What is the name of the video game created by Vincent Beggs in Amesh's story, 'See You Later'?

Answer: Decision

Amesh's story starts with Luke, a boy who likes strategy games and programming. Every day for the past two weeks, he's come into the video game store to talk to the girl at the counter. It also happens to be the day he's going to kill the whole world.

As Luke walks to the counter and toys with buying a new game, he asks Becky, the cashier, if she wants to go to a movie with him but she explains she's seeing someone else. They chat a bit and Luke expresses that he's into programming games before they part ways, but when he puts back the game he wasn't intending to buy, he's taken aside by a man named Vincent Beggs, who explains he's from V-com. Luke knows who the man is though; Vincent is a hotshot coder considered a genius by gamers, though quite the recluse. When Vince offers him a chance to play his newest game, he doesn't think twice.

And so Luke goes to Vincent's rental house and plays his new game, a nuclear strategy game called 'Decision' that he describes as 'Risk on steroids'. Luke can start World War III or he can end it. Or he can end the world. Before he knows it, he's immersed. The first game lasts ten minutes, but by midnight he's obliterated the human race dozens of times. The game is, in short, impossible. It's less a game and more a simulation, and because of that, Luke says it's not altogether fun.
7. Luke, the protagonist of 'See You Later', has a health condition affecting which of these body parts?

Answer: Heart

As Luke finishes playing the game for the evening, Vince's girlfriend, Kara, arrives at the house to find the two of them talking. She introduces herself and explains that the game is a bit impossible, but in the meantime they should join her at the beach. Heading down, they find a telescope waiting and, with the right timing, they watch as the International Space Station passes by the moon. There, at that moment, Vince offers Luke an offer he can't refuse. If Luke can help him crack the game to work, he'll split the advance on it with him.

As Luke looks through the telescope at the ISS, his vision starts to blur and he collapses on the ground. He awakens with Vince and Kara watching over him in the house. He knows the problem is his heart; it's been bad since he was young.

Meanwhile, Becky's relationship with Ray, with the son of a major politician, seems to be going well, but when he leaves the game shop one day he finds that his car has a flat. Kara, of all people, arrives to offer him a jack to help change the tire.

Luke ends up at Vincent's everyday after school and, eventually, he makes it to the end of 'Decision' as the only person on Earth alive, albeit trapped in a space pod orbiting a planet destroyed by nuclear disaster. The game ends with a bright light, some sort of deus ex machina. Luke reasons that if Vince ended the game with aliens, it's a lame way to end it.

Luke ends up at the game store some time after this and when he goes to ring up his games, Becky breaks down. It seems that Ray has been cheating on her with an older woman and her heart is broken. As Luke leaves, Ray confronts him for the recents events; he not only feels like he's been set up by Kara, but it's been verified by someone by the name of Frederick. Kara's shaken by this revelation as it means something horrible is bound to happen.
8. According to her story, Kara and Vincent were brought back in time by alien beings known by what name?

Answer: The Alumini

Kara and Luke return to Vince's to find a knife stabbed through a heart on a cutting board. Kara, in distress, comments that she smells formaldehyde-- the heart is just a message and Frederick probably has Vincent with him.

Luke forces Kara to explain what's happening, so she tells the story of a girl who fell for the perfect boy destined for greatness. They married young and he rose through the ranks fast; he even gave his wife's best friend a job writing code for the Department of Defence. Together, they made a global defense system based in space, moving the nuclear arsenal off the planet and to the International Space Station.

Then, the worst happened-- her friend died. He had a bad heart. On his birthday he died and five years later, her husband became President of the United States and the world went to Hell. The arsenal is let off and soon the world is in nuclear war. And a few people in the space station can only watch and wait as air and food run out. Her husband snapped and went manic, threatening everyone in the station, but that's when the lights outside the station circled them and came into the craft.

Sandra has to stop Amesh's story right then with the immediate question on her mind: "Are they angels?" They're not. They're the Alumini. Beings from a galaxy far far away, and they had been watching.

The Alumini could send them back to a point in the timeline-- a chance to change everything. Kara tells him the truth: she's Becky, from the future. Frederick is Ray, his husband, back from the future as well. Luke deduces it quickly; Vincent is him. He took the name Vincent Beggs because he knew he idolized the name.

Luke realizes the flaw in the story-- Kara's friend died. She can't explain how Vincent came back, but he woke up on the beach and was told he had a purpose to teach himself about the game and the code. He has to stop the war and she has to kill Ray.
9. Is Luke able to stop the nuclear apocalypse in Amesh's story?

Answer: Yes

In a motel room somewhere, Frederick beats up Vincent, who he's tied to a chair for a small chat. He realizes that Becky is out to kill him as though she believes it'll stop whatever she thinks is going to happen, but Frederick believes it's her fault. As Frederick goes to grab a knife, Vincent asks him what the Alumini looked like. He originally thought they were aliens or some kind of incredibly advanced telekinetic life form; he was on the ground dying and the light came and they told him he had one chance to come back. He came back to code, and what he programmed was himself.

Frederick takes the knife in his hand and plunges it into Vincent's heart. It's the second time he dies, but this time, he dies knowing he put the right things into motion.

At the rental house, Luke plays the game one last time, winning from the get-go by avoiding playing at all. He sets the nuclear payload to 0 and gets a Game Over screen.

That night, Becky closes up the game shop and heads to her car but Ray comes up behind her. Down the street, Luke tries to reason with Kara that the way to win is by not writing the code, which he intends to do, but she still believes that the answer is to kill Ray. He gets out of the car before she makes her choice, careening down the road to run him down, but at the last moment, Becky pushes him out of the way and gets hit instead.

As Becky dies, Kara disappears from the world. Luke never wrote that code, but he did grow up sensibly. Ray would still become President, but he would take a wiser stance after Becky's death. Knowing what death looked like, he would be hardened against the nuclear option.

Whatever the lights were, they probably weren't aliens. They were too human, he felt. Maybe angels. Perhaps, he believes, angels are just second chances.

Years later, he went back to the beach with the telescope in hand. It was the day after his 33rd birthday, the day he was expected to die, but his heart hadn't given out. He didn't know how long he had, but then, no one does.
10. Anya believes that she killed her parents as they died as a result of her actions. What happened to them?

Answer: They got into a car accident

As Amesh's story ends, the Midnight Club is wowed by the tale he's told. Cheri remarks that Sandra, who fell asleep partway through the story, managed to fall asleep during the one angel story that actually worked.

In the hall, heading back to their rooms, Natsuki asks Amesh why he ended the story the way he did, with Becky killing herself. Luke didn't get the girl. Amesh acknowledges that he wrote what he knows, but it rang hollow for Natsuki. She wanted them to be together. As she leans in, the two kiss.

Ilonka returns to her room to find Anya awake and fussing with her bed, and though Anya angrily tells her roommate off, Ilonka forcefully insists on helping. Anya admits, shamefully, that she wet the bed so Ilonka brings her to the bath and takes care of the sheets herself. Before she does, Anya blurts out a truth she hadn't before: she killed her parents.

Anya tells the story after her bath. She was offered a chance at an American ballet school and her parents came with her, but before long she almost seemed to want to sabotage herself. The one time she snuck away from home and her parents found out, they went looking for her. The police said they drove around for hours before hitting black ice and crashed their car. Her best friend, Rhett, tried to help her when she took up heroine, even finding her rehabilitation. The truth behind his words-- that she would die if she didn't get clean-- were harsh, but true. One day, she threw a ballerina statuette at his head. She keeps it in her nightstand, broken, to this day. Its leg broke when she threw it, and the coincidence is that she lost the same leg when she got her diagnosis.

Anya admits that she thinks she knows what the shadow in the room was. It's the only darkness that could be creeping around Brightcliffe. As she cries in Ilonka's arms, she exclaims that she doesn't want to die. Ilonka embraces her, but gazes back towards her desk and 'The Paragon Diary' waiting on top.
