Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 5, teams flew to Vietnam. Which team quit the race upon their arrival?

Answer: Dave and Connor

Departing from their Pit Stop overlooking Uluwatu Surf Beach on the island of Bali, Indonesia, teams were instructed to head to Denpasar International Airport and fly themselves two thousand miles to the city of Hanoi in Northern Vietnam. Dave and Connor, who arrived at the previous two Pit Stops in first place despite Dave's foot injury (sustained in Leg 2), decided that when they reached Hanoi they would proceed directly to the Pit Stop and face elimination.

This is precisely what happened. They became the fourth team eliminated from the race.

This is particularly notable because with the elimination of John and Jessica in the previous leg, it was a relatively short game for those who started with Express Passes.
2. Arriving in Vietnam, teams needed to complete a Road Block involving a performance celebrating which of the following?

Answer: Communism

Arriving in Hanoi, the teams needed to wait outside the Rạp Công Nhân Theater, specifically Gallery 42, where they would be able to locate the Road Block for this leg of the race. For this task, the participating team members needed to watch a cultural performance consisting of a Vietnamese song and dance celebrating Communism and patriotism. During the dance, the teams would be shown a nine-word phrase that they would need to memorize. Running into an adjacent room they would have five minutes to match the phrase to a propagandist poster and return it to an attendant before the next performance started. Jennifer, Meghan, Pam, Anthony, Beth, Katie, and Chuck completed the task.
3. In Leg 5, teams could complete the 'Make Your Meal' Detour option which required that they make which of the following dishes?

Answer: Pho

After the Road Block, teams took a taxi to Công viên Thống Nhất to mimic a traditional bamboo dance before receiving their Detour clue, a choice between 'Make Your Move' and 'Make Your Meal'. In 'Make Your Move', teams had to go to the Temple of Literature in Hanoi and set up a chess game using human pieces. Choosing four chess pieces in a game of Chinese chess they need to put them onto the right spots to correspond to an existing game. Pam and Winnie, Bates and Anthony, Joey and Meghan, Caroline and Jennifer, and Mona and Beth completed this one.

In 'Make Your Meal', teams needed to travel to Ngoc Son Temple to collect baskets of chickens and a shopping list they would need to use to buy Vietnam's national dish, phở. Once they made the dish correctly (with the proper amount of ingredients) they could continue on. Max and Katie and Chuck and Wynona chose to do this task.
4. Which team did not use or get targeted by the Blind Double U-Turn in Leg 5?

Answer: Mona and Beth

After the Detour task, teams proceeded by taxi to the site of a downed B-52 bomber in Hữu Tiệp Lake. Here, they encountered a Blind Double U-Turn, which would allow two teams force two other teams to complete the side of the Detour they did not attempt. Pam and Winnie used this mechanic to turn around Joey and Meghan (who had to complete 'Make Your Meal'). Next to arrive, Joey and Meghan, in an attempt to stay ahead of another team, opted to U-Turn Chuck and Wynona, forcing them to complete 'Make Your Move' even though they were already at the back of the pack.
5. Which team was last to step onto the Pit Stop mat in Leg 5?

Answer: Chuck and Wynona

After finishing up at Hữu Tiệp Lake, teams needed to go to their next Pit Stop at the National Museum of Vietnamese History. Pam and Winnie, who stayed up front the entire leg, ended up landing on the mat first and won their first leg of the race. For placing first, they won a trip for two to Whistler, B.C., Canada courtesy of Travelocity.

The last team to arrive was Chuck and Wynona who ended up being forced to complete both Detour options. Luckily for them, since Dave and Connor opted to drop out of the race, they were spared and were considered to arrive in second-to-last place.
6. In Leg 6, teams needed to fly to the city of Maun in what African country?

Answer: Botswana

Leaving the National Museum of Vietnamese History in Hanoi, Vietnam late at night, teams were told to determine where to go to fly to the city of Maun in Botswana, six thousand miles across the Indian Ocean. After flying there via Hong Kong, they needed to proceed on foot to a travel agency to sign up for one of three charter flights to Mack Air (one of three flights) to the Makgadikgadi Pans. Caroline and Jennifer and Anthony and Bates took the first flight, Max and Katie and Joey and Meghan were on the second, and Mona and Beth, Chuck and Wynona, and Pam and Winnie were on the third.

They landed fifteen minutes apart.
7. In Leg 6, teams headed into the desert to search for which of the following?

Answer: Scorpions

Upon landing, teams found their clues waiting at the airstrip in the Makgadikgadi Pans. Hopping into offroad vehicles, they needed to drive themselves down Old Xhumaga Road to locate their next route marker in the Kalahari Desert. This would be teams' Road Block which asked 'Who wants to make a new friend?' For this task, Bates, Caroline, Joey, Max, Mona, Wynona, and Pam headed into the desert with three Kalahari bushmen to search and dig for poisonous scorpions. Once they located the scorpion in their hole, they could hold onto it and place it into a jar to receive their next clue and continue on.
8. How many teams completed the 'Fowl' Detour option in Leg 6?

Answer: Six

After the Road Block, teams needed to continue driving down Old Xhumaga Road, this time with their three bushmen in the back seat of their vehicles. Reaching the next clue box they were asked to pick a Detour option-- 'Fire or 'Fowl'. In 'Fowl', teams, along with their bushmen, went to a specific site to construct a rudimentary trap designed to catch guinea fowl. Once they did so and used the trap to snag themselves, they could receive their next clue. Only Bates and Anthony did not complete this task.
9. In the 'Fire' Detour task in Leg 6, teams created fire in order to to light which of these?

Answer: A pipe

The alternate Detour option in the Kalahari Desert was 'Fire'. For this task, the teams needed to walk with their bushmen to a nearby tribal campsite and use sticks, zebra manure, and dried grass to create their own fire-- not an easy task. Using strength and persistence, Anthony and Bates were the only team to finish the task by lighting the pipe of a tribal chief. Five teams attempted the task, but four chose to switch Detour options midway through.

After this, teams could run to the Pit Stop with their bushmen.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the non-elimination Pit Stop in Leg 6?

Answer: Max and Katie

After the Detour, teams would be taken to their next Pit Stop on foot at the Meno a Kwena Safari Camp situated over the Boteti River. Anthony and Bates, who flew in on the first charter flight and kept their lead through the leg, ended up winning their second leg of the race, taking with them a trip for two to Phuket, Thailand courtesy of Travelocity.

In the end of the leg, Max and Katie were unable to catch up to the other teams after lagging behind at the 'Fire' Detour task (before switching).

They checked into the Pit Stop in last place but were told that it would be a non-elimination leg.
