Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams completing the race's first Detour task did so in which body of water?

Answer: Pacific Ocean

Teams' first Detour task was given to them at the chapel at the Hilton Bora Bora Nui in Bora Bora. There, teams could choose between 'Pick a Pearl' and 'Take a Trunk'. Both involved searching the Pacific and grabbing water shoes and snorkelling gear. In 'Pick a Pearl', teams had to dive into open water until they located lines of shells that they could pry open to harvest two red pearls. Dave and Connor, Jessica and John, Anthony and Bates, Joey and Meghan, Pam and Winnie, and Chuck and Wynona completed this task. Meanwhile, in 'Take a Trunk', teams dove deep to the ocean floor wearing diving helmets, located a trunk, and constructed an 'underwater dining experience' to get their next clue. Mona and Beth, Max and Katie, Caroline and Jennifer, and Idries and Jamil finished this one.
2. In Leg 3, which was the only team to have completed the 'Reel It In' Detour in full?

Answer: Chuck and Wynona

After camping overnight and driving a jetboat through the Rakaia River Gorge on the South Island of New Zealand, teams had to take ATVs to one of two Detour tasks. In 'Rev It Up', both members had to drive a modified vintage car across a course marked set of cones in under a combined total of eighty-three seconds. Jessica and John, Joey and Meghan, Max and Katie, Pam and Winnie, Mona and Beth, Caroline and Jennifer, and Anthony and Bates went for this one. Chuck and Wynona completed 'Reel It In' in which they had to use a rod and reel and catch a single fish at least twelve inches long. Dave and Connor, unable to complete the former due to Dave's injury and unwilling to wait out the latter, used the Express Pass gifted to them by Jessica and John to skip both.
3. In Leg 4, only two teams completed which of these Detour options in Bali, Indonesia?

Answer: 'Sandy Bottom'

Collecting a Detour clue from within a coconut in the Ubud Monkey Forest, teams had to choose either 'Sandy Bottom' or 'Fruity Top'. Only Mona and Beth and Jessica and John chose 'Sandy Bottom' in which they had to collect sand from the bottom of the Ayung River and carry it two hundred yars uphill to fill a bucket for a local brickmaker. Everyone else went with 'Fruity Top' for which teams had to construct an elaborate offering to be paraded through town on a local's head to be delivered for a blessing. Dave and Connor, Max and Katie, Pam and Winnie, Caroline and Jennifer, Joey and Meghan, Chuck and Wynona, and Anthony and Bates completed this one.
4. Which team was U-Turned during Leg 5 in Hanoi, Vietnam?

Answer: Meghan and Joey

During Leg 5, teams had to complete a Detour before heading to the B-52 Memorial in Hanoi, Vietnam. Upon arriving, they encountered the race's first U-Turn, specifically a Blind Double U-Turn. For this, Pam and Winnie U-Turned Joey and Meghan who, in turn, U-Turned Chuck and Wynona.
Joey and Meghan originally completed a Chinese chess-related Detour at the Temple of Literature called 'Make Your Move'. The U-Turn forced them to complete 'Make Your Meal' as well in which they had to accumulate ingredients at a local market to make two bowls of pho ga. Chuck and Wynona did the reverse.
5. In Leg 6, teams completing the 'Fowl' Detour option in Botswana needed to try to do what with local a guinea fowl?

Answer: Catch it

After a Road Block accompanied by Kalahari bushmen, the racers were told to continue on with the locals for one of two Detour choices. In 'Fire', teams had to walk to a nearby campsite and use two sticks, zebra manure, and grass to make a fire with which they could light a tribal pipe.

In 'Fowl', teams went hunting by constructing and setting a trap normally used to catch guinea fowl. Once they sprung the trap properly they could get their next clue. Only Anthony and Bates completed 'Fire'; most teams switched to 'Fowl'. Following the Detour, teams proceeded on foot to the nearby Pit Stop at a safari camp.
6. Both Detour tasks in Leg 7, 'Brains' and 'Brawn', involved animals.

Answer: True

In Leg 7, teams took a water taxi to the Royal Tree Lodge Game Preserve to commence one of two Detour options. In 'Brains', teams had to take a trip on horseback searching for ten animal cutouts on a safari through the savannah. Then, at the end, they needed to properly identify the animals seen using marked tiles to get their next clue.

In 'Brawn', teams stacked firewood in a sand sleigh and then had two donkeys, lured by a carrot on a stick, to take the wood a half-mile. Chuck and Wynona completed 'Brains', Caroline and Jennifer, Mona and Beth, Joey and Meghan, Max and Katie, and Pam and Winnie completed 'Brawn'. Bates and Anthony skipped this task as they took the Fast Forward.
7. Which team completed the 'Train Trials' Detour task in Berlin in Leg 9?

Answer: Joey and Meghan

After a high-intensity BASE-fly from the top of the Berlin Park Inn, teams had to choose between 'Train Trials' and 'Font Follies', both taking place at unique Berlin museums. In 'Train Trials', teams headed to the Deutsches Technikmuseum to lay train tracks in a marked platform to create a complete circuit.

In 'Font Follies', teams instead had to transport two giant, neon letters from a city market stand and then bring them, intact, to the Buchstabenmuseum to get their next clue. All teams attempted 'Font Follies' except Meghan and Joey. Anthony and Bates switched to 'Train Trials' as well.
8. In Leg 10, the two U-Turned teams were forced to complete the 'Whiskey Rollin' Detour option in Scotland.

Answer: True

In the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland, the final five teams had to choose between 'Tasty Puddin'' and 'Whiskey Rollin''. In the former, teams needed to use ox intestine, fill it with organs, seasonings, and oats, and make four portions of haggis and they would need to eat one cooked portion to proceed.

In the latter, they had to deliver eight whiskey barrels two hundred yars up a cobblestone street to a local festival. Only Bates and Anthony went for the barrel option while the other four ate the haggis.

This said, the leg featured the last Double U-Turn of the race and Bates and Anthony used it on Meghan and Joey while Max and Katie used it on Mona and Beth, forcing both teams to complete both sides of the Detour.
9. During Leg 11, which was the only team not to complete the same Detour option as the others?

Answer: Caroline and Jennifer

Finding their Detour clue at the Beacon of Hope statue in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the final four teams needed to select either 'Tray It' or 'Spray It'. 'Tray It' required teams to head to the RMS Titanic's original dry dock to use a menu and seating chart and serve five courses of dishes originally served on the Titanic with one team member preparing the trays and the other delivering down a set of stairs into the dry dock proper.

In 'Spray It', teams instead headed to a Belfast skate park where they had to finish one half of a piece of graffiti art to get their next clue. Only Caroline and Jennifer completed the 'Spray It' task.

They subsequently found themselves eliminated afterwards.
10. How many Detours were featured in this season of "The Amazing Race"?

Answer: Nine

While most seasons of the show feature at least ten Detours (usually one per leg excluding the first and last), this season avoided using Detours in Legs 1, 8, and 12; Leg 8 was the rare exception wherein there was also only one Road Block instead of two (as double Road Blocks often sub in for the lack of Detour in these instances). Two of these Detours, those in Legs 5 and 10, featured Double U-Turns as well.
