Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the Doctor and Clara were trapped on the desert planet at the start of "The Caretaker", the Doctor said they would most likely be eaten by what?

Answer: Sand piranhas

The Doctor said "Before we starve, we'll be eaten by the sand piranhas." This was during a montage showing the Doctor and Clara on adventures, interspersed with scenes of dates with Danny Pink.
Sand spiders are a real species. They are part of the genus Sicarius, and are also known as assassin spiders. They are found in southern Africa. They are highly venomous, but rarely bite humans.
Sand sharks are real. They are mackerel sharks of the family Odontaspididae, and are also known as sand tiger sharks or gray nurse sharks. They rarely attack humans.
Sand worms, at least ones large enough to eat you, are confined to the world of fiction, in films such as "Dune" (1984), "Tremors" (1990) and "Beetlejuice" (1988).
2. Near the start of "The Caretaker" Danny and Clara walk under a series of flags. What is the first one they walk under?

Answer: Canada

Canada is the first flag they walk under. While they are talking in the hallway, the Jamaican flag is flying in the background. Germany is near the middle. There is a United Kingdom flag in the school (probably several), but it wasn't in that scene. Other flags seen include Cuba, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sweden and the United States.
This episode dramatically expands the relationship between Clara and Danny, and marks the first time Clara's school world and Doctor world collide. For more, look at questions 6 and 9.
3. What frequent alias does the Doctor use when going into "deep cover" as "The Caretaker"?

Answer: John Smith

John Smith has been used by the Doctor many times over the years. It has been established by the show that it was used by the First Doctor ("Vampires of Venice"), Second Doctor ("The Wheel in Space"), Third Doctor (several times with UNIT), Eighth Doctor (1996 film), Ninth Doctor ("The Empty Child"), Tenth Doctor ("Smith and Jones", "The Next Doctor", "Human Nature") and the Eleventh Doctor ("The Almost People", "The Crimson Horror").
John Smith actually dates to the very start of "Doctor Who". Susan Foreman, the Doctor's granddaughter, was a fan of the British band "John Smith and the Common Men".
When the Doctor tells Clara he will go under "deep cover" and "blend in as a human" she asks "Have you seen you?" And when the Doctor mentions blending in with otters, Clara notes that "Human beings are not otters."
4. What type of public employee was killed by the alien robot in "The Caretaker"?

Answer: Police officer

A police man hears a sound and enters a deserted building, and has the bad fortune to run into an alien robot creature whose default setting is to destroy anything it views as a problem. After a few laser blasts, all that remains of the policeman are a few body parts.
At the end of the episode, we discover that the police officer is in "The Promised Land" or "The Nethersphere". We get a brief glimpse of Missy, but she does not speak to the officer, he is dealt with by some sort of middle manager.
Community Support Officer Matthew was played by Andrew Gillies, who has appeared in a few TV shows and films since 2005. They include "Breakfast at Barbies" (2005) and "Jamaica Inn" (2014).
5. What was the name of the monster the Doctor was fighting in "The Caretaker"?

Answer: Skovox Blitzer

The monster was a Skovox Blitzer, a robotic weapon. The Doctor claimed it had enough firepower to destroy the Earth. The blitzer fired laser beams to destroy its targets.
Skarasen are the robotic sea monsters that the Fourth Doctor fought in "Terror of the Zygons" (1975). The Skonnan are an alien race that the Fourth Doctor confronted in "The Horns of Nimon" (1979). The Sycorax are the bony aliens the Tenth Doctor fought in "The Christmas Invasion" (2005).
6. What subject did the Doctor think that Danny Pink taught?

Answer: Physical Education

When Danny was introduced as a former solider, the Doctor leapt to the assumption that Danny was a phy-ed teacher. It has been established several times that Danny teaches mathematics, and Danny told the Doctor that at least six times in this episode. The Doctor tried to claim Danny was a Physical Education teacher throughout most of the episode.
7. When Danny moved the chronodyne generators, he messed up the Doctor's plan to trap the alien robot. How long did the Doctor say it would be before the robot creature returned?

Answer: Three days

Chronodyne generators (what a marvelous piece of techno-babble) are literally "time bombs". They create a vortex which sends whatever is caught in the blast through time. The Doctor said the alien would return in 74 hours, roughly three days. The alien moved up the timetable, and arrived in the middle of Parents Night - fortunately the Doctor cleverly tricked the robot into shutting down.
8. What was the name of the "disruptive influence" that the Doctor took for a joy ride in the TARDIS?

Answer: Courtney Woods

Courtney stumbled across the Doctor and the TARDIS in the caretaker's shed, because he needed to clean up a mess. For some reason, the Doctor liked Courtney and revealed the secret of the TARDIS. Later he took her on a trip to the Oberon Galaxy - Courtney was so freaked out that she threw up.
Gareth Wilkins was one of the Clara's students. Elle Woods was the main character in "Legally Blonde" (2001). Nicholas Courtney played Brigadier Sir Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart in "Doctor Who" in over 100 episodes between 1965 and 1989.
This is Courtney's second appearance on "Doctor Who". She first showed up in "Into the Dalek" (2014). Courtney is played by Ellis George, and "Doctor Who" was her acting debut.
9. Danny told the Doctor that he loves Clara.

Answer: False

It was Clara who blurted out "Because I love him!" to the Doctor, right in front of Danny. Probably not the way she intended him to find out.
The Doctor and Danny have a huge argument, with Danny accusing the Doctor of being "aristocratic" and "an officer." When Danny calls the Doctor "sir" he kicks the teacher out.
The Doctor does warm to Danny a little after the teacher saves the world. As the robot is about to explode, destroying itself (and much of the Earth), Danny does a ninja-like leap, distracting the robot long enough for the Doctor to disable it.
At the end of the episode, Danny notes that the Doctor is capable of pushing people to be better than they are, to be braver and bolder. He gets Clara to promise to tell him if traveling with the Doctor ever becomes too much to handle.
10. Who teamed up with Steven Moffat to write "The Caretaker"?

Answer: Gareth Roberts

"The Caretaker" is Gareth Roberts' fifth "Doctor Who" episode, after "The Shakespeare Code" (2007), "The Unicorn and the Wasp" (2008),, "The Lodger" (2010) and "Closing Time" (2011). Roberts began writing "Doctor Who" fiction in the 1990s, and has written several "Doctor Who" novels.
This was Paul Murphy's second episode, after "Robot of Sherwood" (2014). He has been directing for the BBC since 2005, and has directed quite a few episodes of the hospital drama "Casualty".
Jimmy Vee was the actor inside the Skovox Blitzer costume. He has also appeared as Bannakaffalatta in "Voyage of the Damned" (2007) and Moxx of Balhoon in "The End of the World" (2005).
Chris Addison played Seb, the adminstrator of the Nethersphere. Addison is a stand-up comedian, and played Oliver "Ollie" Reeder on "The Thick of It", the BBC political comedy which starred Peter Capaldi.
