Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the Doctor and Clara arrive at the start of "Flatline"?

Answer: Bristol

The Doctor and Clara land in Bristol, which has been plagued by a large number of disappearances. The Doctor is hindered in his efforts to help because the TARDIS is rapidly shrinking, so Clara does most of the heavy lifting in this episode, with one dramatic Doctor scene at the end.
Bristol is the largest city in southwestern history. People have been resident in the area for at least 60,000 years. It was chartered as a city in 1155, and for centuries was one of the largest cities in England.
Bath is also in southwestern England and is famous for ancient Roman spas dating to the first century. Brighton is a beach community in the south of England, and is a popular vacation spot.
Blackpool is Clara Oswald's hometown. It is located in northwest England, around 25 miles from Liverpool. It is a popular seaside resort.
2. What was the name of the graffiti artist in "Flatline"?

Answer: Rigsy

Rigsy was the artist. We see him painting over his spray-painted name as part of his community service sentence. Rigsy was played by Joivan Wade, who is best known for his work on the British comedy series "Big School" (2013) and "Youngers" (2013-2014).
Banksy is a real life British street artist, who began is career in Bristol. He is one of the world's best known political artists. Inkie is another famous graffiti artist who got his start in Bristol. Sickboy is also a well-known graffiti artist from Bristol.
3. When Clara showed the police woman the psychic paper, it stated that Clara worked for what agency?

Answer: MI-5

The police woman followed Clara because she through she was an intelligence agent from the British government.
MI-5, Military Intelligence, Section 5, is tasked with defending the United Kingdom against terrorism domestically. It is the British equivalent of the FBI. The agency celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014.
UNIT stands for the Unified Intelligence Task Force. It made it's first appearance in the "Doctor Who" episode "The Web of Fear" (1968). It played a major role in the series during the Third Doctor's tenure. UNIT was tasked with defending the Earth against supernatural threats, including extra-terrestrials.
4. Who was the first person we saw being absorbed by the two dimensional creatures in "Flatline"?

Answer: Mister Heep

Mister Heep was the man making the desperate phone call at the very beginning of the episode, who is suddenly transformed into wallpaper. Constable Forrest meets Clara and Rigsy, and is turned into a mural of a nervous system. Stan and George are two of the crew working community service who become wall murals.
5. What did Clara use to keep the switch on the train open?

Answer: A headband

Clara uses her headband to keep the switch open. The "dead man's switch" is a common trope in both film and television. It generally concerns a runaway train.
In this case, they attempted to use the train against the two dimensional beings. It didn't work, as the subway car wound up as a mural on the wall.
A toolbox was used to keep the train moving in "Silver Streak" (1976).
6. What did Clara have the graffiti artist draw, in order to confuse the two dimensional creatures?

Answer: A door

She had him draw a door on a poster and then pasted it onto a flat surface. The creatures poured all their energy into opening the door which did not exist, while the TARDIS was directly behind the fake door. The TARDIS absorbed the energy, which allowed the Doctor to return the time machine to its normal size.
7. What word did the Doctor use to describe Clara's performance as "The Doctor"?

Answer: Exceptional

"You were an exceptional Doctor, but goodness had nothing to do with it," the Time Lord told Clara the end of "Flatline." Clara did prove remarkably inventive throughout the episode, using the sonic screwdriver to escape the creatures and coming up with the solution that allowed the Doctor to restore power to the TARDIS.
8. What name did the Doctor give to the two-dimensional creatures that he was fighting in "Flatline"?

Answer: The Boneless

The Doctor, after declaring himself "the man who stops the monsters" sends the Boneless back to their own plane, warning them never to return. The 2Dis was the gadget the Doctor created so that Clara could restore 3-dimensional objects back to their 3-D state.
9. Finish the line by Missy at the very end of Flatline: "I have chosen _________"

Answer: well

We get a reappearance of Missy, in which the mystery actually deepens. She has only one line. "My Clara - I have chosen well." What this means opens up a wealth of possibilities. Since it is unlikely that Missy is an incarnation of the Doctor, it suggests she may have chosen Clara when Clara was in the Nethersphere. Given that Clara probably died more than a few times when rescuing the Doctor, it is possible she meet Missy at some point.

This also lends credence to the theory that Missy is the one who gave Clara the phone number to the TARDIS.
10. Who wrote the season eight "Doctor Who" episode "Flatline"?

Answer: Jamie Mathieson

Jamie Mathieson was the writer of "Flatline" (2014). He certainly has an excellent background for "Doctor Who" as his first film was called "Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel" (2009). Mathieson also write several episodes for the science fiction series "Being Human" and its sequel "Becoming Human". "Flatline" is technically his first "Doctor Who" script, even though "Mummy on the Orient Express" aired the week before.
"Flatline" is MacKinnon's seventh "Doctor Who" and the third of season eight, after "Listen" and "Time Heist" (both 2014). He has been directing for the BBC since 1994.
Christopher Fairbank played Fenton, the grumpy supervisor. He has been acting in films and television since 1978, and is a voice actor in video games. Odd "Doctor Who" connection: Fairbank played the father of John Lennon in the 2010 film "Lennon Naked" in which Christopher Eccleston (the Ninth Doctor) played John Lennon.
Nic Morris was the director of cinematography for "Flatline". He was working as a cinematographer since 1997, and did quite a few episodes of "Being Human" between 2009 and 2011.
