Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the pilot of "M*A*S*H" Hawkeye raffled off a date with Lieutenant Dish. Who won the raffle?

Answer: Father Mulcahy

The plot of the pilot was Hawkeye's efforts to raise money to send Ho Jon (Patrick Adriate) to college in Maine. They raffled off a trip to Tokyo with nurse Maria "Dish" Schneider. In a rigged drawing, Father Mulcahy won.

Lieutenant Dish was played by Karen Phillip. She actually started out as a singer, with Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66. "M*A*S*H" was her acting debut, but she did lots of television work in the 1970s, including a recurring role on Quincy M.E." as Robin, Doctor Astin's secretary.

In the pilot, Mulcahy was played by George Sanders. He was replaced by William Christopher when "M*A*S*H" became a series.

The Dish character was a carryover from the Robert Altman film, where she was played by Jo Ann Pflug.

Lt Dish was just first of many nurses that Hawkeye would attempt to corrupt.
2. Who played Margie Cutler during the first season of "M*A*S*H"?

Answer: Marcia Strassman

Marcia Strassman played Margie Cutler, a new nurse that Hawkeye described as "an incredible distraction". In her debut, Cutler streaked across the compound, earning a salute from Hawkeye and Trapper. Trapper later boxes to get Margie returned to the 4077.

In "Bananas, Crackers and Nuts" Hawkeye proved his insanity by turning down a date with Cutler. Strassman played Cutler for six episodes during the first season.

Strassman would go on to play Julie Kotter, wife of Gabe, on "Welcome Back, Kotter" (1975-79). She worked regularly in films and television until her death in October 2014.
3. Odessa Cleveland had a recurring role as what nurse during the first few seasons of "M*A*S*H"?

Answer: Ginger Bayliss

Odessa Cleveland appeared in twenty-six episodes, mostly during seasons one and two. She is actually named as a regular at the end of the pilot episode.

Ginger Bayliss was a serious nurse, but had her fun side. One of her best moments was confronting a racist patient who feared he had been given the "wrong color" blood.

While best known for her work on "M*A*s*H" Cleveland also appeared as a nurse on "The Greatest American Hero" (1982), "Simon and Simon" (1983) and "Trapper John MD" (1986).

After retiring from acting, Cleveland taught in Los Angeles public schools
4. Gwen Farrell made twenty-five appearances on "M*A*S*H" over the years. What was she known as during most of season two?

Gwen Farrell is immortal as one of the running nurses in the opening credits. She's the one on the left.

Farrell was uncredited during the first season, finally get a name during season 2 as Lt Butler. She was Lt Wilson for three episodes during season two.

Able and Baker were generic nurse names played by a wide range of actresses. Farrell was Baker in episode 3.6 and Able in episodes 4.16 and 8.6.

Besides "M*A*S*H" Farrell's only credited acting role is in "Billy Jack Goes to Washington" (1975) as a reporter.

After acting, Farrell became a boxing referee and has reffed over 700 fights, including being the first woman to referee a world title bout.

Fun fact: Gwen's mother was the founder of the Fatburger restaurant chain.
5. Bobbie Mitchell played nine different characters over eighteen episodes. What was her name during her season one debut?

Answer: Lt Mason

Bobbie Mitchell's first appearance on "M*A*S*H" was as Lt Mason in "The Army-Navy Game" (1973). She was celebrating the start of the game in Henry's office.

Mitchell played Lt Able 3 times and Lt Baker 4. Her last two appearances were as Lt Gage (episodes 4.10 and 5.3)

Mitchell had a variety of other television appearances during the 1970s, including "Charlie's Angels" (1975).
6. Patricia Stevens actually played Lt Stevens several times on "M*A*S*H".

Patricia Stevens appeared on "M*A*S*H" 14 times from 1974 to 1979. She actually played Lt Stevens several times during season 3.

Stevens was Lt Baker five times (seasons 5 and 6) and Lt Able once. She was also Lt Mitchell (season 2), Lt Brown (3.16) and Lt Johnson (4.20).

For "Scooby Doo" fans, Stevens was the voice of Velma Dinkley. After retiring from acting, Stevens became an educator. She died of cancer in May 2010 at the age of 64.
7. Which of these things is NOT true about Nurse Bigelow?

Answer: Instantly fell in love with Hawkeye

Nurse Bigelow was played by Enid Kent over thirteen episodes. She eventually dated Hawkeye, but rejected him several times.

Bigelow sang with the nurses during "Movie Tonight" (1977). She was injured when a wind storm blew over the water tower in "They Call the Wind Korea" (1978). And she and Hawkeye did transfer to the 8063 for a short time in "Temporary Duty" (1978).

Kent worked primarily in television through 1998, including several appearances on "Family Ties". After retiring from acting, she worked as a librarian in Los Angeles.

On a personal note, Enid's father was a refugee from Nazi Germany.
8. At least seven actresses played Nurse Able over the years. Who played Able the most?

Answer: Judy Farrell

With nine appearances, Judy Farrell holds the record. She first appeared during season 5, iand would return in seasons 6, 7, 9 and 11.

Judy Farrell was married to Mike Farrell (BJ Hunnicutt) from 1963 to 1984. Judy is a native of Quapaw, Oklahoma. In a case of art imitating life, BJ said his father in law lived in Quapaw. In "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen" (1983) Able said she was returning to Oklahoma. Judy and Mike's daughter is named Erin: she was born in 1963.

Judy effectively retired from acting in 1986. She died in 2023 at the age of 84.
9. There were at least seven Nurse Bakers on "M*A*S*H". Who played Baker the most times?

Answer: Jan Jorden

Jan Jorden played Baker nine times, starting in season 7 and recurring in seasons 8, 9 and 11.

Jorden's biggest episode was "Baby It's Cold Outside" where she treats a patient with hypothermia. In "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen" Baker says she is going into obstetrics or pediatrics.

Stevens was Baker six times and Mitchell was Baker four times.

Linda Kelsey played Mickey Baker in "The Nurses" (1976), which featured some of Loretta Swit's best acting during the series. Kelsey would go on to play reporter Billie Newnan on "Lou Grant" (1977-82).
10. No quiz on the nurses of "M*A*S*H" would be complete without a shout-out to Kellye Nakahara. What state was Nurse Kellye from?

Answer: Hawaii

Nurse Kellye Yamato, as Nakahara was credited in most episodes, was from Hawaii. Nakahara was born and raised in Honolulu. At the end of "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen" (1983) Kellye says she is moving to Hawaii to be near her family.

Nurse Kellye's biggest moment was at the start of season 11 in "Hey Look Me Over". She calls out Hawkeye for ignoring her and stands up for herself brilliantly.

Nakahara performed in an amazing 169 episodes, two-thirds of all "M*A*S*H", and was credited in forty-four. Kellye retired from acting in 2000. She died in Pasadena in February 2020.
