Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dark type Umbreon spent most of its time in this game without a good coverage move. Its second Community Day solved that problem by giving it what move?

Answer: Psychic

Psychic is a two-barred move which is relatively strong. With Umbreon's great bulk, even in the face of strong Fighting types, it will likely get to use this move at least once before going down. In PvP, Umbreon can utilize Snarl to use Psychic repeatedly, letting it pressure commonplace Fighting types effectively.

This helps prevent it from being susceptible to farming strategies at the hands of these otherwise difficult assailants.
2. Darkrai has always been a strong contender in both raids and PvP. It is a bit quirky, however, because of its main choice of damage output in neutral situations. What non-Elite move of Darkrai's generates the most DPS?

Answer: Shadow Ball

Bizarrely, despite getting STAB, Dark Pulse falls just short of the Ghost type Shadow Ball, even on the Dark type Darkrai. In PvP, it also gets more relevant coverage than Dark Pulse does, letting Darkrai hit Fairies and Fighting types that are very common neutrally.
3. Mega Sableye, on paper, is a terrible, useless Pokemon in every facet. However, it and it alone can make one claim its competition would love to be able to contest, but can't. What can Mega Sableye exclusively do of the following?

Answer: Simultaneously buff Ghost and Dark types

As a Ghost/Dark type, Mega Sableye can uniquely buff both types. The two tend to heavily compete, as they both hit virtually the same things super effectively as each other. As such, in theory, if a friend wanted to bring both Ghost and Dark types to fight something weak to them, you could get some mileage out of a Mega Sableye that could buff whatever they put on the field.

However, this really does not make up for Mega Sableye's atrocious DPS and merely decent survivability, making it out to be incredibly niche and generally passed over for much stronger options.
4. Spiritomb consistently received its fifteen minutes of fame in this game once every year. What holiday is Spiritomb's arrival meant to celebrate?

Answer: Halloween

In Halloween, Ghost and Dark type Pokemon make up the vast majority of the game's wild spawns. Niantic has also featured a Ghost or Dark type raid boss in every tier, including T5 and T4 Megas as well. Finally, the questline "A Spooky Message" appears every year, and the grand reward for finishing this questline has been the opportunity to catch a Spiritomb. Spiritomb has never been available outside of this yearly questline, so players looking to add it to their teams or Pokedexes must capitalize during Halloween season!
5. On release, Tyranitar initially became the best Dark attacker in the game. It began to fall behind as future generations would release, but in 2022, it was right back to the top when Tyranitar gained access to a new move. What move?

Answer: Brutal Swing

Brutal Swing is an incredibly fast, three barred Charged move that it by far the best Dark Charged move in the entire game. Tyranitar had been falling behind due to only having access to Crunch, a merely decent but not great move. It had always had the stats to succeed so, when combined with an amazing, fresh new move, it was ready to re-establish itself at the top of the meta.
6. Yveltal quickly established itself as a top tier PvP threat when it came to the game. This was largely due to its Dark type Fast move of choice - what move?

Answer: Snarl

Snarl does little damage, but it generates tons of energy. This lets it facilitate Yveltal's expensive charged moves and, since Oblivion Wing isn't expensive, it lets Yveltal basically spam this move if using it.
7. In 2021, Niantic brought a flurry of new moves to the game, one of which being the Dark type Payback. You'd think the very first recipient of this move would be a Dark type, but it was not to be. Who was the first Pokemon to get Payback, done as a Community Day?

Answer: Machamp

On paper, it's easy to see why Payback may initially look appealing. After all, it gives Machamp super effective coverage against the dreaded Psychic and Ghost types who counter it so thoroughly. Unfortunately, Payback is not a very good move, offering low power and a slow animation for being a one-barred move.

As such, Machamp would still be better off with Rock Slide or even Heavy Slam for coverage.
8. The Bug/Dark type Lokix had potential, but didn't have the moves to succeed. A random blessing came to it at a very random time in 2024, when Niantic decided to give it a new Fast move that helped turn it into a PvP contender. What move?

Answer: Counter

Counter may seem suboptimal due to being a Fighting type move without outstanding coverage. However, the move's parameters make it out to be arguably the single best Fast move in all of PvP, so any Pokemon regardless of typing would benefit greatly from receiving it. Lokix is no exception, as Counter improves its damage through shields while also facilitating speedy usage of X-Scissor and Dark Pulse.
9. Necrozma-DawnWings hit the ground running upon release in 2024. However, while its signature Moongeist Beam got all the attention, Necrozma-DawnWings trainers were highly encouraged to run the move in tandem with a Dark type move. What move?

Answer: Dark Pulse

The idea was, Moongeist Beam may be absurdly powerful, but it's still a one-barred move and demands high energy cost. It's very possible for Necrozma-DawnWings to faint before it can reach another usage of the move, causing it to have a lot of wasted energy. Dark Pulse offers similar coverage to Moongeist Beam, and is two barred. If the trainer knows for certain Necrozma-DawnWings won't survive long enough to use another Moongeist Beam, they can have it use Dark Pulse to make at least some use of the energy. Dark Pulse is obviously much, much weaker, but offers energy-saving utility that is always useful.

Of course, purchasing a second charged move on any legendary will be extremely expensive. Given how absurdly powerful Necrozma-DawnWings is, however, the expenditure will assuredly be worth it in the end.
10. In 2023, the fan favorite Incineroar received its Community Day. It got Blast Burn as an Elite move, but also gained its signature move as a new option for Dark offense. What is Incineroar's signature move?

Answer: Darkest Lariat

In terms of raid performance, unfortunately Darkest Lariat is only a very small upgrade over the relatively middling Dark Pulse, which Incineroar already had access to. This did not allow Incineroar to really assert itself in the grander overall meta, though it at least remained a decent option for those lacking in particularly great Dark types.
