Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shadow Ball is and always has been the tried and true, classic Ghost type Charged move. Any Ghost looking to compete with the best of the best has to have this move, or a signature move that's somehow even better. What is Shadow Ball's base power?

Answer: 100

100 base power for a two-barred Charged move is very, very high. The move itself is slightly sluggish, but in a way which is definitely balanced considering how strong it is. With the exception of various signature moves, it has always been the best Ghost type move in the game. To give an idea: the Dark type Darkrai will put out more DPS with Shadow Ball than Dark Pulse despite lacking STAB on Shadow Ball.
2. Giratina-Origin is one of few Ghosts who is arguably best off avoiding Shadow Ball. This is because Giratina has a signature move that ever so slightly outperforms it. What is Giratina's signature move?

Answer: Shadow Force

Shadow Force is a one-barred move with 140 base power. Technically, it does indeed slightly outperform Shadow Ball if it manages to hit peak DPS. However, because it's a one-barred move, the chances of that happening are relatively low. Because Shadow Ball is a two-barred move, it has a greater chance of achieving peak DPS- if it does and Shadow Force does not, Shadow Ball will prevail.

Of course, Giratina could always just run both moves to give itself a much better chance at hitting peak DPS. This is extremely costly, however, so it may not be a suitable option for most players.
3. Necrozma-DawnWings was one of the stars of Pokemon Go Fest in 2024. A lot of the hype came from its signature move, Moongeist Beam. Moongeist Beam set the record, shared by Necrozma DuskMane's Sunsteel Strike, for having the highest base power of any move in the game's history. What is Moongeist Beam (and Sunsteel Strike)'s base power?

Answer: 240

With such a titanic base power, it's little wonder that Moongeist Beam became the second best move in the game, only narrowly trailing the even more ridiculous Dragon Ascent. This gave Necrozma DawnWings just the thing to become arguably the best anti-Psychic Pokemon in the game. For as extremely risky as it is to fight other Ghosts, the potential payoff of landing a Moongeist Beam makes it worth the risk as well.
4. Although completely awful in PvE, Ominous Wind can be used by an adventurous player in PvP. When using Ominous Wind, it has a 10% chance to do what?

Answer: Raise Attack and Defense by +2

There aren't a whole lot of prominent Pokemon who actually have access to Ominous Wind. Giratina-Origin is probably the most well known user of the move, and it doesn't even use it commonly to begin with. However, for those who do get it, it can become quite the trump card - 10% of the time, anyway. During the other 90%, it is sadly a horrible move which deals basically no damage. Clearly, anyone deciding to use it must feel quite lucky.
5. Out of all the Ultra Beasts, Blacephalon is the Ghost type representative. It had access to Shadow Ball and a massive Attack stat which, in theory, would set it up to top the Ghost DPS chart. However, it was thoroughly held back by its only option for a Ghost type fast move. What move?

Answer: Astonish

Astonish is simply an awful move that undermines anything that uses it. Blacephalon's many pros are able to outweigh this one huge con, and make it a great overall Pokemon. However, if it even got Hex, much less Shadow Claw or Lick instead, it would offer some of the highest Ghost DPS the game has seen.
6. Every type in the game corresponds with a form of real world weather that can boost it. What type of weather boosts Ghost?

Answer: Foggy

Ask yourself- when is the last time you would describe the weather around you as 'foggy'? If the answer is basically never, then that too provides the answer to how frequently Ghosts find themselves being weather boosted. At least they have really strong moves and Pokemon who can do a lot of damage even without the boost.
7. Chandelure, who already had access to Shadow Ball beforehand, received a new Ghost move as per its Community Day. What move?

Answer: Poltergeist

In terms of performance, Poltergeist is almost a direct copy of Fire Blast, only made into a Ghost type move. This means it's a pretty terrible overall move which absolutely pales in comparison to Shadow Ball. Clearly then, unless you want a Chandelure with Poltergeist for the novelty, it would be best to stick to Chandelure's readily available moveset.
8. Ghost and Dark often intersect, namely when fighting other Ghosts or Psychic. There is one Pokemon in the entire game capable of simultaneously buffing the power of both Ghost and Dark moves when it hits the field. Who is it?

Answer: Mega Sableye

As a Ghost/Dark type, Mega Sableye will buff both types when it hits the field. Sadly, the positives for it end there. Mega Sableye may get good moves, but it has terrible stats to try and use them with.
9. Giratina-Altered enjoyed years and years of dominance over Ultra League PvP, as the #1 Pokemon that all trainers must account for to have any real shot at success. Which Ghost move of the following largely helped Giratina-Altered to assert this status?

Answer: Shadow Claw

Shadow Claw, a fast move, deals respectable damage and generates lots of energy when used. It perfectly complements Giratina's low energy Charged moves, Dragon Claw in particular.

While Giratina can use Shadow Sneak, Shadow Sneak is an awful overall move. It's best to run simply Shadow Claw by itself if Ghost coverage is desired. However, if the player absolutely needs Giratina to have the best matchup possible against Cresselia and Lugia at the expense of valuable coverage and useful utility, Shadow Sneak can be equipped.
10. Mewtwo with Shadow Ball became the first 'Ex Raid' this game would ever see. However, this became quite the mighty challenge to overcome. What Tier raid was this?

Answer: 6

Mewtwo with Shadow Ball became the first ever Tier 6 raid to exist. This was a boss with 22,500 HP, a massively unprecedented figure for the time. Even since then, only a small amount of contenders have ever been T6s, and that list is quite prestigious. It contains Mewtwo, Mega Latias, Mega Latios, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre and Mega Rayquaza. Quite the lofty company to be in!
