Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The first game that introduced characters from these two closely linked franchises was 'Donkey Kong', and arcade game released in 1981. Mario (who was then called Jumpman, and whose occupation was a carpenter) had to free Pauline, the object of his affections, who had been kidnapped by Donkey Kong.
With the development of the NES platform, he gained a series in his own right in 1983, 'Mario Bros.' This series also saw him change from a carpenter to a plumber, and clear the sewers of various critters alongside his twin brother Luigi.
In 1985 'Super Mario Bros.' saw the establishment of a pattern that was to be repeated in numerous future games: King Koopa (later to be known as Bowser) has kidnapped Princess Toadstool (later to be called Princess Peach), and the brothers must rescue her. It took a while, but Princess Peach eventually developed into a character that did more than sit around waiting to be rescued.
Princess Peach has a number of attendants, including Toad (who sports a red and white mushroom-like cap), Toadsworth (her castle steward who tries, not all that successfully, to protect her).
Princess Daisy of Sarasaland debuted in 'Super Mario Land' (1989), offering a more tomboyish approach to princessing. 'Super Mario World' (1990) saw the introduction of Yoshi, a green dinosaur on whose back Mario often rides during his travels. His doggy assistant Poochy was first seen in 'Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island' (1995).
As well as Bowser, there are a number of antagonists, including seven Koopalings (Ludwig, Lemmy, Roy, Iggy, Wendy, Morton and Larry) who were at one time described as Bowser's children. Kamek the Magikoopa was Bowser's childhood carer, and continued to serve him faithfully in his adulthood.
Wario, initially Mario's antagonist, has become more of an anti-hero in later games.
Professor Elvin Gadd is a scientist and inventor who has had cameos in several games, mostly in the 'Luigi's Mansion' series. He is included here because his unintelligible gibberish speech was inspired by the characters in 'Animal Crossing', where the incorrect characters can all be found.
