Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Magic Cape
Answer: The Legend of Zelda
The Magic Cape makes its first appearance in the "Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past". In the game, the cape is found in the graveyard. It is a very useful item as it turns Link invisible while he wears it, however, it does rapidly deplete Link's magic meter while it is worn.
The cape also allows Link to pass by spikes without being damaged and is needed to pass a bumper trap on Death Mountain.
2. Lens of Truth
Answer: The Legend of Zelda
The Lens of Truth is first discovered in the "Ocarina of Time" game at the bottom of the well mini-dungeon. The lens allows Link to see things that are normally invisible like secret passages or trap floors. The lens is especially useful in the Shadow Temple and for defeating its boss Bongo Bongo. The Lens of Truth does use magic and will slowly drain Link's magic meter while being used.
3. Magic Bean
Answer: The Legend of Zelda
Magic beans can be purchased from the bean seller in "Ocarina of Time" and planted into designated spots of soft soil. Once planted, Link can visit the Temple of Time and come back as an adult to find a magic plant that will allow him to access places he ordinarily could not reach. Each time Link buys a magic bean the seller raises the price by 10 rupees.
The first magic bean will cost Link 10 rupees while the tenth magic bean costs 100 rupees.
4. Recorder
Answer: The Legend of Zelda
The recorder is discovered in the fifth dungeon in the original "The Legend of Zelda" game. The first use for the recorder is to help defeat the dungeon boss Digdogger who hates the musical sound. In the overworld, the recorder will teleport Link to the dungeon entrances he has defeated. Finally, if played in the right location, the recorder will reveal the secret entrance of the seventh dungeon.
The Zelda sequels have used all kinds of musical instruments to accomplish magical effects in the game with my favorite being the Ocarina.
5. Fire Flower
Answer: Super Mario Bros.
In the original "Super Mario Bros." if the player already has a large Mario, hitting a magic block can release a Fire Flower. The magic flower allows Mario to shoot fireballs along the ground to kill enemies. This is particularly useful against tougher enemies like the Hammer Brothers.
The downside is that if Mario gets hit he becomes small and lose the firepower. If the player is skilled enough to make it to King Bowser Koopa at the end of a level they can have Mario hit the boss with five fireballs to defeat him.
Otherwise, Mario has to get past Bowser to the key that causes the bridge to disappear.
6. Power Star
Answer: Super Mario Bros.
Starting in "Super Mario 64" the goal of the game was to obtain Power Stars. These stars are obtained from everything from defeating a boss to finding a secret location. In the game, the stars are important for progressing to the upper levels of the game with a minimum needed to open doors in the palace. Stars continue to be an important part of the Mario sequels with a prominent role in the "Super Mario Galaxy" games.
7. Tanooki Suit
Answer: Super Mario Bros.
The Tanooki Suit makes its first appearance in the "Super Mario Bros. 3" game. When the player uses the Tanooki suit their character turns into a stone statue protecting them from an enemy attack or some of the dangerous obstacles. The Tanooki is modeled after the Japanese mythical raccoon dog that can shape-shift.
8. Super Leaf
Answer: Super Mario Bros.
The Super Leaf also made its first appearance in "Super Mario Bros. 3" giving the player the ability to transform into a raccoon that can fly! The player has to get a running start and jump to take off. With a tail flick, the player can slow their descent. The tail could also be used as a weapon to strike an enemy or hit a power block.
9. Mumbo Tokens
Answer: Banjo-Kazooie
Gruntilda the witch is the main antagonist of the game "Banjo-Kazooie" and, on top of kidnaping Tooty, Banjo's sister, she has also stolen Mumbo Tokens from Mumbo Jumbo the shaman. Banjo and Kazooie can find these tokens hidden throughout a level and if they collect enough of them they can bring them back to Mumbo who will provide a helpful transformation spell.
The tokens look like Mumbo's skeletal head and a player will have to find at least 75 of the 115 of them to complete the game.
10. Golden Feather
Answer: Banjo-Kazooie
The Golden Feathers are needed for Kazooie and Banjo to perform the Wonderwing ability. The ability causes Kazooie to fly around Banjo and use her wings as a weapon against enemies or protection against dangerous hazards. The feathers are often called invulnerability feathers as a result and each gold feather provides two seconds of Wonderwing protection. Kazooie can carry up to ten feathers at a time.
