Listed as the top selling game for the Nintendo GameCube, 'Super Smash Bros. Melee' was first released in 2001 and has sold nearly 7.5 million copies. It features characters from several Nintendo games and is classed as a fighting game. Number two on the list is 'Mario Kart: Double Dash' from 2003. This racing game has sold just short of 7 million copies.
'The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker' was the tenth game in the series, released for the GameCube in December 2002. This game is set on a chain of islands and features the usual character of Link in another of the adventure games. It was another popular entry with sales close to 4.5 million. The fifth game on the top sellers list is 'Luigi's Mansion', from September 2001 with 3.3 million sold. Set in a haunted mansion, it was the first game released specifically for the GameCube.
The fifth game in the 'Metroid' series, with sales of 2.8 million 'Metroid Prime' was the first one issued for the GameCube, in November 2002. The game involves puzzle solving, finding various artefacts and shooting enemies. 'Animal Crossing' came out in December 2001 on the GameCube and racked up 2.7 million games sold. It is classed as a social simulation game and has no end - the player has to collect and sell items as a new resident in a village inhabited by animals.
The first in what became a series of games, 'Pikmin' was released in 2001 and has sales figures of 1.6 million. This strategy game involves a space ship crashing on a planet and using the residents, the Pikmin of the title, to find the parts needed to repair the ship and escape. As the name implies, 'Resident Evil 4' was part of a franchise and was released for the GameCube in 2005. It is classed as a survival horror game in which the player controls a character as he tries to rescue the US President's kidnapped daughter. This game appears at number seventeen on the best seller list with 1.6 million copies sold.
'Kirby Air Ride', from 2003, had sale of 1.35 million. The character of Kirby had already featured in previous Nintendo games and this GameCube game involved racing on various machines. Released in 2003, 'Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles' is role-playing game and sold1.3 million copies for the GameCube.
'Donkey Konga' was first issued in Japan in December 2003 with the rest of the world being able to buy it the following year. Eventually, it sold just under 1.2 million copies. The game features Donkey and Diddy Kong who find what turn out to be bongo drums on a beach. There are various songs to play along to, with different rhythms. The lowest ranked GameCube game listed is 'Star Fox: Assault', at number thirty-five on the best selling list and 1.1 million sales. It was released in 2005 and was the second in the 'Star Fox' series to appear on the GameCube. It is a shooting game and have a multi-player option.
The games which didn't appear on the GameCube include 'Minecraft', which appears on numerous systems and has sold in excess of 300 million copes at the time of writing. 'Grand Theft Auto' appeared on the PlayStation and Game Boy Color, 'Gran Turismo' , 'God of War' and 'Horizon Zero Dawn' are all PlayStation games.
