Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Infamously, a fan favorite Fighting type Fast Move took a huge nerf that greatly hindered its performance in a Player-versus-Player setting. What move suffered this nerf?

Answer: Counter

Counter originally held parameters of dealing 4 damage per turn (DPT) and 3.5 energy per turn (EPT). It's damage remained as it was, but it's EPT was reduced all the way to 1.5, more than halving it. This was a devastating nerf that rendered the move mainly only useful on Fighting types. Before, it was so good that it had seen use on basically anything that could learn it.
2. Another popular PvP Charged Move suffered from a significant nerf. This Flying type move being nerfed significantly hampered the performance of many Flying types such as Lugia and Skarmory. What move fits that description?

Answer: Sky Attack

Sky Attack suffered an energy nerf, going from being a flexible move to being relatively expensive for middling damage output. Lugia still has Aeroblast to turn to for huge Flying damage, and Skarmory has Brave Bird. But with Sky Attack not being as cheap, these Pokemon aren't as effective against an opponent with a shield available as before the nerf.
3. Shadow Heatran was released as one of two Shadow legendaries in this timespan. Though trainers were advised to use an Elite TM to give it Magma Storm, you could certainly make do without one as well. What is Heatran's highest DPS Fire move not including Elite moves?

Answer: Flamethrower

Flamethrower just barely edges Fire Blast out in DPS, by a tally of 56-54. Flamethrower is also more reliable, as it's damage is split into two bars and it's animation is much faster than Fire Blast. Thus, Flamethrower isn't splashy, but it'll work for Heatran until the trainer secures an Elite Charged TM to get it the vastly superior Magma Storm with a DPS of just slightly higher than 73.
4. Shadow Palkia was the second Shadow legendary released in this timespan. It came not long after Palkia-Origin form had made a run in raids. Does Shadow Palkia out-DPS Palkia-Origin?

Answer: Yes

Shadow Palkia's coveted shadow boost actually does allow it to barely take the DPS lead despite the inferior Draco Meteor. Spacial Rend brings Palkia-Origin close, but Shadow Palkia is slightly superior overall.
5. In terms of Dynamax raids, "Dual Destinies" picked right up where "MAX Out" left off by finally introducing legendary Pokemon to Max raids. What legendary was the first legendary to appear in a Max raid?

Answer: Articuno

The trio of birds were released, in order of Articuno, Zapdos and then Moltres. The raids were quite difficult, but were generally manageable for a group of about three well prepared trainers.
6. Two different Mega Evolutions debuted in the game. One of them was a tanky Fairy/Steel type. What Pokemon was this?

Answer: Mawile

Though it is relatively tanky, Mega Mawile was cursed with an abysmal Attack stat that eliminates any chance of it being viable in a raid context. It's DPS is simply far too low for its merely decent survivability to make it a decent option for a decent raid team.

Raiding Mega Mawile could have potentially been worth it for PvP however, as regular Mawile and Shadow Mawile are passable options in Great League play.
7. A second Mega debuted, a Psychic/Fighting type with a wide variety of moves in its kit. What Pokemon?

Answer: Gallade

Mega Gallade, in and of itself, is not a bad Pokemon. It has serviceable DPS as a Fighting attacker despite being given a horrible move set of Low Kick + Close Combat. And it's DPS is pretty good as a Psychic attacker as well.

Like with Mawile, raiding Mega Gallade may have also been worth it for trainers seeking to develop a regular Gallade or Shadow Gallade for PvP purposes. Both forms of Gallade were quite formidable in PvP play.

Sadly, Mega Gallade fell badly short in PvE. Despite being decent in both roles, it was competing with competition that was flat out amazing. Mega Gallade simply could not stand out in any meaningful way, and was banished to obscurity as far as PvE went.
8. Shadow Lugia was given a raid day. During this period of time, trainers catching it had a low but possible chance to receive Lugia's signature move, Aeroblast, upon TMing away Frustration. What is Aeroblast's base power?

Answer: 180

With the Shadow boost, this becomes a staggering 216, just barely shy of Necrozma DawnWings/DuskMane's signature moves. This finally made Lugia a worthwhile Flying attacker in PvE and a deadly threat in PvP as well.
9. Shadow Ho-Oh was given a raid day. Despite also getting its signature move in similar fashion to Lugia's, Sacred Fire has much less base power than Aeroblast. What is Sacred Fire's base power?

Answer: 120

With the Shadow boost, this brings Sacred Fire up to a threatening 144. This still pales in comparison to Shadow Aeroblast's 216. Sacred Fire is a move with a much faster animation than Aeroblast, but the raw power is more appreciated. Especially on tanky Pokemon such as Lugia or Ho-Oh who can stick around to use it repeatedly in a raid.
10. "Dual Destinies would end off with a bang, debuting two different fused forms of a legendary Pokemon. Hailing from the Unova region, what Pokemon gained access to two new fused forms?

Answer: Kyurem

Kyurem-Black and Kyurem-White finally graced the world with their presence, just over three years after base Kyurem debuted. If base Kyurem had Glaciate for a Charged Move, fusing it into White or Black would give their respective Charged moves: Ice Burn and Freeze Shock.

Kyurem-Black and it's ridiculous 312 Attack stat took the Dragon attacking meta by storm, as it's access to the flagship gold standard Dragon Tail + Outrage let it assume the non-Meva Dragon DPS throne.

Kyurem-White was sadly not given such great moves. Ice Burn did let it become quite the solid choice for one's Ice team, however.
