Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The First Turnabout" is Phoenix's first trial as a defense attorney and he is nervous. Not only is he inexperienced but his client is someone close to him. Who is it?

Answer: His friend, Larry

Phoenix is a rookie defense attorney whose first client is his longtime friend Larry Butz. Larry is something of a pathetic dolt and hopeless romantic who is on trial for murdering his girlfriend (possibly ex) Cindy Stone. Cindy was known to have other boyfriends who were rich and Larry's alleged motive is that Cindy dumped him. Larry denies this and denies killing her. However, a witness claims to have seen Larry leaving Cindy's apartment around the time of the murder.

This case marks the first appearance of Phoenix Wright, his mentor Mia Fey, his friend Larry Butz, prosecutor Winston Payne and the Judge.
2. The victim in the case is Cindy Stone who was murdered with a statuette shaped like what?

Answer: The Thinker

Larry is accused of murdering Cindy with a statuette of the Thinker which had brought back from a recent trip to Paris. The killer banged Cindy on the head with the statuette, murdering her instantly. Much discussion is given to the fact that Cindy had only returned home from Paris that afternoon.
3. The prosecution's star witness, Frank Sahwit, claims he knew the exact time of Cindy's murder because he heard the time on the television. How does Phoenix disprove this?

Answer: There was a power outage

Newspaper salesman Frank Sahwit claims he saw Larry leave Cindy's apartment at 1:00 p.m. and knows the exact time because he heard the television announce such. However, the autopsy places Cindy's death much later at 4:00 p.m. In addition, Sahwit said he phoned in the death from a phone box because there was a power outage and he could not use the phone in Cindy's apartment. Phoenix contradicts him by saying a power outage would also mean the TV would not work.

Indeed, the power outage is confirmed.
4. The murder weapon was actually what item?

Answer: A clock

Cindy's Thinker statuette is actually a clock that announces the time when the neck is tilted. This fact was not known because the clock mechanism is hidden inside the statuette and the item does not appear to be a clock at first glance.
5. Who killed Cindy Stone?

Answer: Frank Sahwit

Frank Sahwit was not actually a newspaper salesman but a petty burglar who broke into Cindy's apartment when she was out. However, she returned from her Parisian trip when Sahwit was still there so he killed her in a struggle. Phoenix reasoned that the only way Sahwit could have known the time was if he heard the Thinker announce it.

However, Sahwit defends himself by saying he heard the time of 1 p.m. and Cindy was killed at 4. Phoenix counters this by saying that the Thinker statue was still on Paris time because Cindy had only just returned home.

The clock was not slow by three hours as previous discussed but ahead by nine. Sahwit becomes the first of many guilty people to have an epic breakdown on the stand and is subsequently arrested.
6. What is unusual about the murder weapon that killed Mia?

Answer: It is the same murder weapon from "The First Turnabout"

Mia was killed with the Thinker statuette from the first case. After the events of "The First Turnabout", Mia held onto the Thinker as gift. In the opening sequence, the player will see someone enter Mia's office to steal some papers and murder her when she unexpectedly walked in. Phoenix takes Mia's murder hard as she was not only his mentor who believed in him when no one else would, it is implied he had romantic feelings for her as well.

This case marks the first appearance of several important series-long characters: Detective Gumshow, Maya Fey, Miles Edgeworth and Marvin Grossberg.
7. Why does Phoenix agree to defend Maya in court?

Answer: All of these reasons

Mia's younger sister Maya Fey is arrested for her murder. Maya was on the phone with Mia when her sister was murdered and ran over when the phone went dead. Detective Gumshoe arrests Maya because (in something that would go on to be a recurring joke in the series) Maya's name was written in blood on a paper near Mia's body.

Phoenix, who is now the owner of Mia's firm, vows to defend Maya even though her case appears hopeless. Phoenix remembers that he became a defense attorney to help people like Maya who appeared to be hopeless and whom no one else would help. Phoenix does try to find a different lawyer for Maya but Marvin Grossberg, Mia's mentor, nervously refuses. Phoenix agrees to take Maya's case because he knows it is what Mia would want him to do and he felt like he owed it to his late mentor.
8. What did Phoenix discover in April May's drawer at the Gatewater Hotel?

Answer: A wiretap

Phoenix struggles to find any evidence incriminating anyone else. He travels to the Gatewater Hotel across the street from the crime scene and discovers a woman named April May in the room directly across from Mia's office. April May acts very suspiciously and also claims to have seen a female figure attack Mia.

However, her testimony is all over the place and contradictory at times. She also refuses to let Phoenix touch a screwdriver that was sticking out of a drawer. Phoenix later enters her room when April May is gone and discovers a wiretapping device inside. Phoenix suspects April May was listening in on Mia's office.
9. After the second day of investigation, Maya is released from jail and who is arrested in her place?

Answer: Phoenix

Phoenix does a good job of destroying April May's testimony in court, proving the witness lied and perjured herself. In the subsequent investigation, Phoenix learns of April May's relationship with Bluecorp CEO Redd White whose has previously come up in connection with Mia. Mia and Maya's mother, Misty Fey, was a spirit medium who assisted the police in a case. However, that case awry and the police became a laughing stock when it was revealed they consulted a spirit medium. Misty went into hiding and Redd White began blackmailing several people including Marvin Grossberg.

Phoenix begins to pry around into Redd White which leads to him being arrested for Mia's murder as Redd White is heavily connected to the police.
10. Who killed Mia Fey?

Answer: Redd White

Mia Fey became a lawyer to investigate her mother's disappearance which we later learn is connected to prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. Mia was collecting information on Redd White to expose him as a blackmail who may have been involved in her mother's disappearance. White was onto her and broke into her office to steal back the papers she collected. However, Mia interrupted him and White was forced to kill her. He bribed April May into framing Maya.

During the trial, Phoenix struggles to prove his innocence as Edgeworth, while not under Redd White's influence, is too arrogant to believe a mistake has been made and is more concerned with securing his perfect conviction rate. Maya, who appoints herself as Phoenix's apprentice despite having no legal experience, uses her ability as a spirit medium to channel Mia. Mia, in Maya's body, provides Phoenix with a receipt for a glass lamp White claimed to have seen the previous week. However, the lamp was only purchased the day of the murder. She also presents Phoenix with a list of names that Redd White was blackmailing. White panicked for his safety and confessed to the murder.
