Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yoshi
Answer: World 1-3
Although Yoshi hadn't appeared in a "Mario" platformer since "Super Mario Sunshine" on the Gamecube, he returns in "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" quite early on, making his mark in six of the game's levels, often when Mario needs the extra hand in tackling otherwise difficult enemies (think of Pokeys and Yoshi's ability to just eat them up).
The first instance will be World 1-3, but he reappears from boxes containing eggs in Worlds 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7.
2. Bloopers
Answer: World 4-4
Bloopers, while a typical Mario foe in both underwater and sky levels depending on the game, only appears in two levels of "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", specifically World 4-4, which is in the water-themed region, and World 8-4. Mario will only be able to defeat these foes with fire or ice projectiles, otherwise they will pursue him with their attacks unless he can swim fast enough. Blooper Nannies also appear in World 4-4, firing off their babies to make things difficult.
3. King Bill
Answer: World 9-8
New foes made specifically for this game, King Bills are massive versions of your typical Bullet Bill that shoot not from cannons, but from the far side of the level as Mario passes through it. Taking up most of the space on the stage, Mario has to get to a good height to make sure clearance is given because there's no real way to avoid it (unstoppable force and all that).
These only appear in the final level of the secret World, and are thus only seeable if you get all the Star Coins in World 8 as well.
4. Water Balls
Answer: World 7-2
Only appearing in this level, Water Balls are unique in that they create patches of water that Mario can jump into and swim around in without a need for traditional physics or understanding of how water works. World 7 takes place almost entirely in the clouds, so Mario can use these features to jump around over large gaps, swim to safety, and continue on his way.
The catch is that foes-- generally Bullet Bills-- can also go through the Water Balls, doing so at a much slower speed, creating hazards that Mario will still need to account for.
5. Jumbo Rays
Answer: World 5-5
Only found in this one stage flying overtop the dangerous jungles of World 5, the Jumbo Rays are actually quite friendly compared to everything else in the game, appearing to float through the clouds in long arcs to allow Mario to traverse the skies to get to his goal.
The Rays are on set paths, so all Mario needs to do is properly maneuver atop them to get to where he needs to be. This being said, there is a minimal amount of Bullet Bills that will appear just to cause a bit of nuisance, naturally.
6. Propeller Suit
Answer: World 1-1
One of the handful of brand-new items featured in this game is the Propeller Suit, which Mario and co. can don to whirl up into the air, reaching higher spots, dodging enemies, and performing corkscrew dives to attack below. Being a key item, it launches with Mario's adventure, appearing as early as the game's very first full level (which, itself, should seem pretty familiar in layout for avid "Mario" platformer players).
7. Boomerang Bros.
Answer: World 2-1
While Mario will run into the perennial favourite foe, the Hammer Bro., in World 1-3, the Boomerang Bro. shows up for the first time, in this game, in World 2-1, the Desert World, which seems a natural entry point for the enemy. They don't come alone though; this game sees the reemergence of the Fire Bro., Ice Bro., and Sledge Bro.
The Ice Bro. is relegated to World 3, but the others show up throughout the game.
8. First level not to allow Super Guide
Answer: World 9-1
Although Super Guide will activate for the player as soon as they fail on any given level eight times, World 9 doesn't allow for this aid, instead forcing the player to rely on their own skills with the game to get them through the extra eight levels standing in the way of game completion.
It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise through, since unlocking all of the World 9 levels requires the collection of all of the game's previous Star Coins.
9. Introduction of the Mini Mushroom in a level
Answer: World 2-2
The Mini Mushroom, first seen in the DS game "New Super Mario Bros.", shrinks Mario down even smaller than his normally-weakest form, allowing him to pass through small cracks throughout the levels and reach spots he never could have before. Additionally, Mini Mario has the ability to jump quite high, especially for his size, and run across water with enough speed.
The catch is that he's not quite as hearty against taking hits. You can find the first Mini Mushroom once you dig deeper into the Desert World.
10. A level you need to revisit when you hit a red switch
Answer: World 3-4
There are two of these levels in the game, both in World 3. Once Mario heads into the northern reaches of this icy World, he'll hit World 3-4 and 3-5 and be unable to reach the castle at the far end of a large chasm. To get to it, he needs to hit a red switch, activating a number of red blocks found in both maps, in order to get access to the proper exits that will get him to the end.
These are the only instances where Mario's return to the levels is mandatory.
