1. Haludovo Palace Hotel
The Haludovo Palace Hotel is an abandoned hotel on the Croatian island of Krk. It opened in 1972 but the hotel's casino quickly went bankrupt and the hotel was abandoned. During the Yugoslav Wars, the hotel was a refugee hostel but since then it has remained abandoned. The inside of the building is wrecked while the exterior remains in relatively decent condition.
2. Kolmanskop
Kolmanskop is a ghost town in southern Namibia. It was once the site of a booming town nearby rich diamond mines. However by World War I, the diamond industry waned considerably once the mines were depleted. Today, the buildings of Kolmanskop still stand but many of them have been ravished by sandstorms, filling them with sand.
3. Rummu Prison
Rummu Prison is an abandoned jail in Estonia that is now famously underwater. The prison and the surrounding Rummu Quarry are popular tourist attractions for hikers and scuba divers. However, it is also a dangerous place to visit as divers and swimmers have been injured by jumping onto sunken buildings and debris.
4. Anping Tree House
Anping Tree House began life as a sugar warehouse in Tainan, Taiwan. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction so named because the roots of a banyan tree cover the building and sometimes twist and gnarl inside as well. In 2004, the government renovated the building to make it more accessible for visitors.
5. Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital
Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital was an asylum and hospital in Beelitz, Germany during both World Wars. Adolf Hitler was once treated here after he was blinded by a British gas attack. Today, the hospital and sanitarium are abandoned but a frequently visited by ghost hunters as the stereotypical "creepy haunted hospital' as much of the old-timey medical equipment remains in place.
The hospital has also been used a film set for such movies as 'The Pianist' in 2002.
6. Poveglia
Poveglia is an island off of the coast of Venice, Italy. The island was once home to a sanitarium that treated plague victims and sufferers from other diseases before becoming a mental institution. Poveglia is widely regarded as one of the most haunted places on Earth.
It is not possible to visit the island except with special permission typically received by journalists and documentary makers.
7. St. George's Church
St. George's Church in Lukova, Czech Republic is an abandoned church built in 1534. It was abandoned in the 1960s when the roof collapsed during a funeral. The church is said to be haunted by actual ghosts but it is also home to 32 plaster ghost statues that sit in the pews.
8. Gereja Ayam
Indonesia's Gereja Ayam, perhaps better known as the chicken church, is a never-completed building on the island of Java. It was intended to be an all-denominational worship house but the building was never finished and was abandoned because of financial problems.
Despite its name, the bird-shaped building was supposed to resemble a dove. Today, the building is abandoned except for a snack stand and nearby food carts.
9. Great Train Graveyard
Great Train Graveyard is located in Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. The cemetery is made up of abandoned trains from when the area was home to a booming mining community. Today, the trains are the areas main tourist attraction with some of the trains allegedly used by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid during their South American exploits.
10. Buried Village
Te Wairoa, also known as the Buried Village, was a former Maori village that was destroyed in 1886 by the eruption of Mount Tarawera. The village was covered with ash, similar to Pompeii after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Today, Te Wairoa has been excavated and is a popular tourist site alongside the nearby Wairere Falls.
