Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which self-governing country was the first to grant the unrestricted right to vote to ALL adult women?

Answer: New Zealand

Other governments preceded New Zealand in granting the vote to some women but these were territorial or state governments rather than entire self-governing nations. New Zealand granted the franchise in 1893. For example, the Isle of Man, a dependent territory of the UK, granted the vote to adult female real-property owners in 1881. Australia granted the franchise to non-Aboriginal women in 1902. Bhutan granted suffrage in 2008. Saudi Arabia has permitted women to vote in local elections since 2015; it does not conduct national elections.

2. What was a famous political slogan of the 1950s?

Answer: I Like Ike

"I like Ike" was a slogan for General Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952. He was known by his nickname, Ike.
"Keep Cool With Cal" was Calvin Coolidge's slogan in 1924.
"He Kept Us Out Of War" was the slogan for Woodrow Wilson in 1916. After his win, though, many reasons led to the U.S. entering W. W. I, including Germany's submarine warfare and the sinking of the ship, Lusitania.
"54-40 or Fight" was the 1844 slogan for James K. Polk. It meant that he wanted the boundary of the Oregon Country to be 54 degrees, 40 minutes. It was later peacefully set at 49 degrees N. Latitude.

3. What is the name given to the bonnet generally worn by Scottish soldiers when in parade dress?

Answer: Glengarry

The glengarry is a bonnet often associated with the British military. Until recently it was possible to use the glengarry to identify which regiment a Scottish soldier belonged to, as the diced pattern on the bonnet was unique to each regiment. This all changed in recent years when the Scottish regiments were all amalgamated into one super-regiment wearing the same headdress. An example of the glengarry can be seen being modelled, by me, in my profile avatar.

7. Queen Victoria's favourite home was Osborne House. On which English island will you find this royal residence?

Answer: Isle of Wight

Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert wanted a home away from the royal court and bought Osborne House as a summer home in 1845. The existing property was too small for their needs and was torn down to make way for the present house which was designed by Prince Albert himself.

The family spent as much time as possible there each year and it was the place of Queen Victoria's death in 1901. It is now run by English Heritage and is open to the public. None of the other islands are in England - Anglesey is Welsh, Skye is in Scotland and Jersey is one of the Channel Islands.

8. Which ghostly ship, that has supposedly roamed the waves since the 18th century, inspired an opera by Richard Wagner?

Answer: The Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman, said to be captained by a man who sold his soul to the devil, has been spotted in places as far apart as Australia and the North Sea. In Wagner's opera, the Flying Dutchman's captain is redeemed by the faithfulness of a beautiful, self-sacrificing woman who flings herself into the sea for what seems like a very flimsy reason.
