Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these U.S. presidents made the following statement? "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."

Answer: Bill Clinton

Everyone knows this story. Bill Clinton had an adulterous relationship with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern, and even even lied about it under oath during his impeachment trial. The truth came out and Monica Lewinsky was responsible for Club Monaco's lipstick sales for all of 1999 after her interview with Barbara Walters. Clinton survived the scandal.

His wife later claimed to have been under fire in Bosnia during her presidential run in 2008. CBS cameras proved that to be untrue. Maybe it runs in the family?
2. It has been claimed that this U.S. President stated that he helped liberate Auschwitz, along with other heroic acts overseas during World War II.

Answer: Ronald Reagan

After claims made to Israeli Prime Minister Shamir that he had also taken photographs of the concentration camps, it was later discovered that while he was in the service, he had never even left his home. (As reported in the book "Reckoning With Reagan" by Michael Schaller.)
3. In 2008, this Canadian claimed that he received nothing from the Provincial Nominee Program. When people got suspicious, he continued to deny that he received any type of monetary gain from the program. Well, maybe not directly...but his wife owns quite a few shares from a firm that receives profits, which has earned the family millions. Oops!

Answer: Robert Ghiz

Premier Ghiz insisted that this program was for the good of Prince Edward Island's citizens. It was even better for him and his family, as his wife, Kate Ellis Ghiz, owned several shares, and his in-laws gained more than they could ever have dreamed. Unfortunately, you're not allowed to funnel money to your family using your political sway.
4. This British individual's 1993 "Back to Basics" came back to bite him in the butt, as his campaign was interpreted as being based on strong, solid morals. He expressed outrage and shock as his Cabinet members were found to have participated in less than moral...activities. To make matters worse, it was later revealed that he himself had had an extramarital affair with MP Edwina Currie in 2002.

Answer: John Major

Former British Prime Minister Major's intent was for his "Back to Basics" to be based more on the economy and education, but was interpreted by the media and the public to be more about morality. This couldn't have been more damning to the former PM and the Cabinet, as former Cabinet member David Mellor was outed for his extramarital affair, while Michael Brown, Alan Amos, and Timothy Yeo were busted for sexual scandals.

Other unsavoury incidents included:

*Major was discovered to have had a long-standing affair himself, though not until years after his term in office;
*Conservative Member of Parliament David Ashby was outed by his own wife for sleeping with men;
*The Earl of Caithness, Malcolm Ian Sinclair, was rumored to have committed adultery. His wife killed herself over these allegations, and Sinclair resigned in 1994.
5. This British politician is famous for his 1963 affair with prostitute Christine Keeler, in spite of being married and insisting it never happened...at first.

Answer: John Profumo

The ramifications for this one were potentially severe. Since Keeler also had a relationship with Yevgeni Ivanov, a Soviet naval attaché involved in espionage, the "Profumo Affair" became a national security issue. Profumo resigned from politics and worked for charity as a volunteer at Toynbee Hall for the rest of his life, becoming Chairman of the hall in 1982.

In 1975 he was awarded a CBE for his charitable works, and by the time of his death in 2006 was regarded as having more than atoned for his one mistake.
6. This U.S. individual helped cover up a break-in at a hotel that was headquarters to the Democratic Party's National Committee in 1972. He insisted he had nothing to do with the break-in numerous times.

Answer: Richard Nixon

The infamous Watergate scandal ended Nixon's career. After being ordered to turn over all of the White House tapes, it was discovered that Nixon had been in on the cover-up a mere week after it happened. He resigned as President on August 9, 1974.
7. In 2008, this New Yorker, known for cracking down on prostitution and corruption, along with his strong moral values, was caught in a prostitution ring himself. He was once quoted as saying, "Ethics and accountability must and will remain rigorous in my administration."

Answer: Eliot Spitzer

The New York Times blew Spitzer out of the water when they reported that he was a member of the Emporers Club VIP, where he had sex with prostitute Ashley Dupré for $1,000. It was later discovered he had at least seven encounters with Dupré and other prostitutes in six months. Under threats of impeachment, Spitzer resigned from his role of the governor of New York.
8. This U.S. individual was one of the front-running opponents of child pornography. He authored the "Child Modelling Exploitation Prevention Act of 2002," which outlawed images of pre-teen children. He also passed a law that forced volunteers of groups dealing with children (such as Girl Scouts) to be fingerprinted. Then he was busted for sending explicit text messages and pictures to several young male pages.

Answer: Mark Foley

Foley resigned from Congress immediately after he was told that he would be expelled from the House. Several male pages came forward and told similar stories of their encounters with Foley, but because they were at least 18 at the time, Foley was not prosecuted for those actions. Foley admited to being a gay man, but insisted that he wasn't a pedophile, although there were contradicting reports.

While he said he hadn't had contact with a minor, he side-stepped the question of whether he had sent texts and pictures to teenage boys.

He wasn't tried due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
9. This U.S. candidate denied having an affair with his videographer to his wife and the public. However, after the National Enquirer reported that he also fathered a daughter with his mistress, he admitted to the affair...but denied being the father. He finally confessed to being the father two years later in a press conference.

Answer: John Edwards

Edwards' wife of 30 years, Elizabeth, subsequently filed for divorce. His former mistress, Rielle Hunter, would not confirm or deny whether or not she was still together with Edwards. According to his former aide, Andrew Young, Edwards promised to marry Hunter after his wife died of stage IV breast cancer.
10. This U.S. individual claimed to know nothing about the waterboarding techniques used by American officials. The member of Congress said, "It was my understanding at that time that Congresswoman Harman filed a letter in early 2003 to the CIA to protest the use of such techniques (waterboarding), a protest with which I concurred." The Washington Post unveiled the truth in 2007.

Answer: Nancy Pelosi

Joby Warrick and Dan Eggen of the Washington Post uncovered the truth when they found out that Pelosi had been part of a secret two-hour meeting in 2002, where they wrote, "For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA's overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk." The journalists claim that no one had any objections to these practices.
