Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "What I Saw on My Holidays" included lots of flags like the one in the photograph. Of which region is this a traditional emblem?

Answer: Tirol, Austria

The Tirol (aka Tyrol) is an ancient place in central Europe. After World War One, it was divided into two areas, the north and east going to Austria, and the south to Italy.
Modern, official, flags have the Tyrolian coat of arms, a red eagle on a silver shield with a golden crown, on horizontal bars of white (top) and red (bottom). Depicted is an older style with vertical white and red bars.
2. "What I Saw on My Holidays" every morning was footwear like that in the photograph. In the local language, what name is sometimes used?

Answer: Abfahrt-Skistiefel

Another popular word for ski boots in German is Skischuhe.
Let me tell you about ski boots: they are designed by sadists and worn by masochists. Traditionally they were made of leather and were worn laced-up. Modern ski boots are made of various plastics with metal clasps.
They are designed to clamp the feet tightly into bindings.
Take it from someone with over 30 years of experience, "comfortable ski boots" is a contradiction in terms.
3. "What I Saw on My Holidays" were lots of machines like the one pictured. What is the trade name given to it by the manufacturers?

Answer: Pisten Bully

Often colloquially known as 'piste bashers' in English, these machines are used to groom the ski slopes and move snow about.
Pisten Bully is the name given to its products by Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug AG, which is based in Laupheim, Germany. The Pisten Bully became the world's largest selling variety of 'piste basher'.
If you fancy one for your driveway, expect to pay more than $500,000.
4. "What I Saw on My Holidays" was signs like these. What type of transportation does it identify in the country I was in?

Answer: Buses

The H is an abbreviation of the German "die Bushaltestelle", bus stop in English.
As The Hollies probably never sang:
"Bushaltestelle, nasser Tag, sie ist da, sage ich
"Bitte teilen Sie meinen Regenschirm"
Bushaltestelle, Bus fährt, sie bleibt, die Liebe wächs
Unter meinem Regenschirm..."
5. "What I Saw on My Holidays" was directions like this in the local language. What does it mean in English?

Answer: Entry prohibited

Okay, so not every question on funtrivia needs to be a hard one.
The wrong answers are "Rauchen ist hier verboten." - Smoking is forbidden here; "Parken verboten." - No parking; Das ist verboten." - That is forbidden.
6. "What I Saw on My Holidays" was places with signs like this in the local language. What does in mean in English?

Answer: Self service

"Selbstbedienung" is a German word for a shop or restaurant where customers serve themselves.
Selbermacher is a German word for a DIYer

This photograph was taken at the Nagel Hütte on the beginners' slope at the Austrian ski resort of Westendorf.
7. "What I Saw on My Holidays" every morning was this church spire dominating a local village. This type of spire is colloquially known by the name of a vegetable. Which one?

Answer: Onion

Churches with 'onion dome' spires are ubiquitous throughout Austria, Germany and other parts of central Europe and Russia.
Authorities differ on what they represent. Some say they bear a similarity to burning candles, others say they represent Heaven.
The photograph is of St Nicholas' Church in Westendorf, Tirol, Austria. The church dates to at least 1320 AD. While onion domes are often said to be particularly representative of the Eastern Orthodox faith, St Nicholas' is Roman Catholic.
8. "What I Saw on My Holidays" was machines like those in the photograph. What is the name popularly given to them?

Answer: Snowmobile

This particular machine is a Lynx Snowmobile made by a company from Finland. A number of companies make these machines, the world market leader being Bombardier of Canada. You may hear the word Ski-Doo used generically, but that is a trade-mark of Bombardier.
Basically, the machines have caterpillar tracks to the rear and steerable skids to the front. This combination allows them to cover long distances quickly. Typically, they are used to get staff around the mountain, and some are used to evacuate injured skiers or snowboarders. (No, language pedants, I am not going to debate whether "evacuate" is used properly in this sentence.)
In theory, most snowmobiles can reach a top speed of 70mph, while racing variants - yes, that is a sport - can reach 150 mph.
9. "What I Saw on My Holidays" included animals like this that are non-native to the country I was in. Of which continent are they native?

Answer: South America

Okay, I think these are Alpaca, but didn't have time to jump out of a moving gondola to ask them.
The photograph was taken in Westendorf, Austria, where there is a business offering hikes with Alpaca.
Alpaca are often confused with similar Camelids like Llama, but Alpaca are more of a group animal than the solitary Llama
10. "What I Saw on My Holidays" was an aeroplane like this on display at an airport. What is it?

Answer: Douglas DC-3

This particular Douglas is in the livery of Austrian Airlines and on display at Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart. Salzburg is Austria's second busiest airport (after Vienna).
It is used by scheduled and charter airlines and is particularly busy during the winter sports season. The first commercial flights took off in 1926.
The first DC3 flew in December 1935. More than 16,000 DC-3s and the military C-47s were built. Over 150 were estimated to still be in operation by the mid 2020s.
