Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Antonio Joli, an 18th century artist, painted two classic sites in Rome in the painting here. What is the famous building on the left of this picture, where large-scale entertainment events would take place?

Answer: Colosseum

The Colosseum, where events from gladiator fights to full-blown mock battles would take place, is pictured here in its partially ruined state so well-known to the modern eye. The building was an amphitheater that could hold over 50,000 attendees.
2. Now we're zooming in to the other classic site from the Joli painting, shown here in its own piece. This is an arch named for which Roman emperor, famous for his religious choice?

Constantine was the first Christian emperor of Rome, who instituted Christianity as the Imperial faith. The arch is a triumphal piece commemorating his victory in battle over Maxentius. This arch, which spans the Via Triumphalis, was the last of the triumphal Roman arches built, and had a unique style. Its design inspired the also famous Arc de Triomphe of Napoleon.
3. This fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732, completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, and is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome. Throw a coin in to be reassured that you will once again see Rome in your lifetime - the coins are regularly collected for the poor. Which fountain is this?

Answer: Trevi Fountain

Vittorio Emmanuel's monument mimics classical-style equestrian sculpture, but was built in the modern era to commemorate the unification of the various Italian states in the 1800s. The figure of the goddess of victory appears around the king.
10. We conclude with another ancient site, near the Quirinal Hill, a column of an ancient emperor famous for a spiral bas-relief sculpture tracking up the side. Which emperor, victorious in the Dacian Wars, is honored here?
