William Worrall Mayo (1819-1911), founder of the Mayo Clinic, was born in England and immigrated to the United States in 1846. He worked as a pharmacist in New York City and studied medicine at colleges in both Indiana and Missouri before settling down in Minnesota in 1854. One of his first major contributions to medicine was the care of wounded soldiers during the Dakota War of 1862.

Dr. Mayo would eventually establish the Mayo Clinic in the city of Rochester, Minnesota on January 27, 1864. It has since grown into what is considered to be one of the best hospital systems in the United States. In addition to its main facility in Rochester, Minnesota, the Mayo Clinic operates several other facilities in the cities of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jacksonville, Florida.
