In the episode Kelly was about to leave for Europe for a year of studies and Woody wanted to give her a promise ring so she wouldn't forget him. Woody told Sam and Carla he wanted to make Kelly Mrs. Woodrow Tiberius Boyd to which Carla made some comment about his middle name Tiberius. Woody then said he hadn't told Kelly that was his middle name, but she shouldn't have a problem with it as he had accepted her middle name of Susan, saying it as if Susan was a weird middle name.

Diane saved the day for Cheers. Diane had bowled for PE in college for six semesters but did not want anyone to know, so she didn't tell them. But Gary insulted her sorority and so she stepped up. Because of Diane's heroics, Cheers won their first competition against Gary's. Woody had been a champion bowler in Indiana but he hadn't bowled since the 'tragedy' and froze while trying to bowl for the guys. Coach passed away at the end of season three so he was not present during this episode. Norm did not bowl for the team, but when he went into the lounge at the bowling alley everyone said "Norm" just like they do when he enters Cheers.

A commercial agent, played by veteran character actor Barbara Babcock, showed up at the bar one day and talked Sam into starring in a commercial. The commercial featured Luis Tiant as spokesman for Field's Beer but he had trouble pitching the product. Sam came in as the relief pitcher and saved the commercial, just like in his playing days. The commercial went so well that the agent planned to take Sam national but Sam had a problem with his working relationship with her, as she expected him to be at her beck and call. Sam turned down the offer because of the strings attached. Luis Tiant was a Cuban born pitcher who played for the Red Sox from 1971-78 and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame.

In the beginning of season 9, "Cheers" celebrated its 200th episode with a special double episode that brought together current and former cast members, along with the creators and writers of the show. During this episode it was revealed that the picture of Geronimo that was on the wall in the piano nook was one of Nicholas Colasanto's favorite pictures in his dressing room and it had been placed there after his death. In the final scene of the series, Sam went and adjusted the picture as one last tribute to the man who brought Coach to life.

While the trophy was being passed around the bar it disappeared and ended up in Gary's possession. After Gary broke the trophy, Carla and Sam went over with a bottle of champagne to make peace. All of the glasses in Gary's were dribble glasses that Carla had switched out with Gary's regular glasses. After that Gary sent the exterminators to Cheers saying they had a rat problem and then put sheep in Rebecca's office. In retaliation, Carla cut into Gary's cable and interrupted the fight broadcast, replacing it with Cliff and Norm reading poetry. All of Gary's customers went to Cheers. Finally, Gary sent the real Wade Boggs to Cheers as a peace offering but the gang did not believe it was really him so they chased him down the street and stole his pants.

Diane walked in and turned out to be the woman Tip was trying to elude but Sam saved Tip from her. When Norm came back Cliff asked him what he was saying "about that do nothing Congress." Norm repeated his criticisms and then realized he was sitting next to the Speaker of the House. Tip O'Neill served as a congressman from Massachusetts from 1963 through 1987 and was Speaker from 1977 through 1987.
