Letters Y and Z Trivia Questions

1. Zagreb is the only country capital city whose name begins with the letter Z. Zagreb is the capital of which country?

From Quiz
Hello, Here is the Letter "Z"

Answer: Croatia

Zagreb is the capital and largest city in Croatia. It stands on the banks of the river Sava and at the foot of Mount Medvednica, on the way between Central Europe and the Adriatic Sea. It is a city with many attractions, with countless museums, art galleries and theaters. Its population is around 700 thousand inhabitants. Since the 11th century there have been two communities in the Gradec and Kaptol region that competed politically and economically. In the 17th century the two communities were merged to form the community of Zagreb.

2. Why do Americans pronounce the 26th letter of the English alphabet as "zee" when most of the rest of the English-speaking world pronounces it "zed"?

From Quiz Why Z?

Answer: Americans wanted to be different from the British

The original pronunciation in English was "zed". This was taken from the Greek zeta, with a little bit of Latin and French along the way. Sometime in the middle ages, local dialects in Britain started to produce the zee sound. The first recorded use in literature was in Thomas Lye's "New Spelling-book" in 1677. While no one really knows for sure why Americans started to say zee, some have proffered the view that it started during the Revolutionary wars as a way of distancing themselves from the British.

3. Zoologically speaking, what is an animal which is the sole product of a single egg?

From Quiz Z is for...

Answer: zoon

Zoon is a biological term which originally came from the ancient Greek word 'zoion', meaning animal; it evolved into New Latin (zoon) and Middle Dutch (sone), and when translated into English it becomes 'son'; they don't seem to account for XX chromosomes which would be a daughter (dochter). We could talk about zoa (the plural), zooids (the antonym) or 'who's zoonin' who', but let's just call it a baby. The other choices are also real words and excellent for use in Scrabble.

4. What is a type of wordless singing, joyous in nature, usually associated with the Swiss (spelled backwards)?

From Quiz "Y" Through the Looking Glass

Answer: Ledoy

Ledoy (yodel) is the correct answer. The closest written words that may try to communicate the sound of a yodel call might be "Ay Ee Oooo". This high-pitched joyous singing is said to have originated in the Swiss Alps as a form of communicating with other goat-men on the mountain. It is still a popular form of music in Switzerland today. The Swiss International Yodeling Festival occurs every three years. In 1924, the First Yodeling Festival was held in the city of Berne, Switzerland. A different location is chosen for each festival date.

5. Who was the great hero portrayed in Sir Walter Scott's "Marmion"?

From Quiz You asked for it!

Answer: Young Lochinvar

Published in 1808 by Scott (1771-1832), it tells the overly romantic tale of the bravest, boldest, fairest of all knights. Scott went on to write romantic novels as well, and his style is now considered a bit over the top, but his words live on and touch the heart: "O young Lochinvar is come out of the west, Through all the wide Border his steed was the best; And save his good broadsword he weapons had none, He rode all unarm'd, and he rode all alone. So faithful in love, and so dauntless in war, There never was knight like the young Lochinvar. He staid not for brake, and he stopp'd not for stone, He swam the Eske river where ford there was none; But ere he alighted at Netherby gate, The bride had consented, the gallant came late: For a laggard in love, and a dastard in war, Was to wed the fair Ellen of brave Lochinvar. So boldly he enter'd the Netherby Hall, Among bride's-men, and kinsmen, and brothers and all: Then spoke the bride's father, his hand on his sword, (For the poor craven bridegroom said never a word,) "O come ye in peace here, or come ye in war, Or to dance at our bridal, young Lord Lochinvar?" "I long woo'd your daughter, my suit you denied; -- Love swells like the Solway, but ebbs like its tide -- And now I am come, with this lost love of mine, To lead but one measure, drink one cup of wine. There are maidens in Scotland more lovely by far, That would gladly be bride to the young Lochinvar." The bride kiss'd the goblet: the knight took it up, He quaff'd off the wine, and he threw down the cup. She look'd down to blush, and she look'd up to sigh, With a smile on her lips and a tear in her eye. He took her soft hand, ere her mother could bar, -- "Now tread we a measure!" said young Lochinvar. So stately his form, and so lovely her face, That never a hall such a gailiard did grace; While her mother did fret, and her father did fume And the bridegroom stood dangling his bonnet and plume; And the bride-maidens whisper'd, "'twere better by far To have match'd our fair cousin with young Lochinvar." One touch to her hand, and one word in her ear, When they reach'd the hall-door, and the charger stood near; So light to the croupe the fair lady he swung, So light to the saddle before her he sprung! "She is won! we are gone, over bank, bush, and scaur; They'll have fleet steeds that follow," quoth young Lochinvar. There was mounting 'mong Graemes of the Netherby clan; Forsters, Fenwicks, and Musgraves, they rode and they ran: There was racing and chasing on Cannobie Lee, But the lost bride of Netherby ne'er did they see. So daring in love, and so dauntless in war, Have ye e'er heard of gallant like young Lochinvar?" Well, have you?

From Quiz Catching some ZZZZZs

Answer: Annibale Zoilo

Annibale Zoilo (c 1537-1592) was born in Rome. Little is known of his early years, but he clearly was very talented as he became maestro di cappella of San Luigi de' Francesi by 1862, when he was probably in his mid-20s. A short few years later he became maestro di cappella at St John Lateran in Rome, one of the most coveted positions for a musician at that time. His last position took him to Loreto, Italy, where he remained until his death. Mikolaj Zielenski (dates unknown) was a Polish composer whose only known works were published in 1611, two polychordal works dedicated to the Archbishop of Gniezno (a city in central western Poland). Gioseffo Zarlino (1570-1590) was born near Venice, Italy, and was ordained as a priest in the Franciscan order. While he did compose a number of works, his principal contribution to music was in musical theory. He also held the post of maestro di cappella of St. Mark's, Venice. Nicolaus Zacharie(c 1400-1466) was possibly from Brindisi, Italy. Very little is known about him, but in 1420 he was a singer at Florence Cathedral, then was taken by the Pope to Rome to sing in the Papal choir. His last known position was as a chaplain at the church of Santa Maria in Ceglie Messapico, near Brindisi. His three known works are two motets and a secular ballata.

10. The "Harry Lime Theme" is the famous theme from the 1949 movie "The Third Man". Which instrument provides the distinctive sound for this music?

Answer: A zither

The zither is an ancient instrument with variations found in the music of many cultures from Ancient Chinese to modern European. Zithers usually consist of metal strings stretched over a flat hollow box with a sound hole; the strings are attached to tuning pegs. There are many different instruments in the zither family, including psaltery, autoharp and dulcimers; a Google image search will show you the wide variation in shape and size. The word is derived from the Ancient Greek "kithara", which also provides us with the modern word "guitar". "The Third Man" is set in post-WW2 Vienna and tells the story of a writer investigating the accidental death of his friend Harry Lime who turns out to have been involved in criminal activity. The music and photography enhance the sinister and mysterious atmosphere tremendously, and the movie won an Academy Award for Best Photography as well as a BAFTA for Best British Film. 17. The board game known as Y plays very similarly to another game with a geometric name. Which game is it?

From Quiz Y? Here's Y!

Answer: Hex

Hex was invented by Danish mathematician Piet Hein in 1942, who originally named the game Con-tac-tix. Parker Brothers picked up the game in 1952 and named their version Hex. Hex is traditionally played on a rhombus shaped game board featuring 11x11 hexagonal cells. Each player places their colored stone on one of the hexagons. The player that links opposite sides of the game board first is declared the winner. The game of Y is played in a similar fashion to Hex. It was originally played on a triangular shaped board with hexagonal cells along each side and filled into the center. However, today Y game boards can vary in size and cell shape. The winner of Y is the player that can first connect all three sides with his/her game pieces. The game of Y was invented in 1953 by American mathematicians Craige Schensted and Charles Titus.

The Houyhnhnms represent all the best virtues of humankind. The Yahoos are the lowest of the low: filthy, degenerate, exhibiting every reprehensible aspect. Zachary Taylor did not like the formal dress and pomp used in the military at that time, and wore plain dress. He was also in the middle of every fray his men were in. Thus, he received the title "Old Rough and Ready", which was very fitting. Taylor never lost a battle he enjoined, and eventually became a Brigadier General. Although he was a Southerner and a slave owner, he wanted the Union to hold together. Some historians feel that because of him and his courage and honesty against the many who did not like him for his stance, the Civil War was postponed for 11 years. He was president for little more than one year, dying after what was said to be an acute attack of indigestion.
