Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You have most likely heard about the "YMCA" from the famous song by The Village People. What do the letters actually stand for?

Answer: Young Men's Christian Association

The initials YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association, an organization that promotes religious spirituality as well as physical fitness in young men. The organization was started by English philanthropist George Williams in 1844. The YMCA would eventually make its way into the United States in 1851, with its first club opening in Boston, Massachusetts. Today branches of the YMCA can be found all across the world and the clubs are utilized by men of all ages.

The famous disco band The Village People released their famous single "YMCA" in 1978.

The song is still quite popular and is very often heard at dance parties. However, the song has garnered some controversy. Some believe the song is a tribute to the organization, while others believe it to be a song written in support of male homosexuality.
2. The board game known as Y plays very similarly to another game with a geometric name. Which game is it?

Answer: Hex

Hex was invented by Danish mathematician Piet Hein in 1942, who originally named the game Con-tac-tix. Parker Brothers picked up the game in 1952 and named their version Hex. Hex is traditionally played on a rhombus shaped game board featuring 11x11 hexagonal cells. Each player places their colored stone on one of the hexagons.

The player that links opposite sides of the game board first is declared the winner. The game of Y is played in a similar fashion to Hex. It was originally played on a triangular shaped board with hexagonal cells along each side and filled into the center.

However, today Y game boards can vary in size and cell shape. The winner of Y is the player that can first connect all three sides with his/her game pieces. The game of Y was invented in 1953 by American mathematicians Craige Schensted and Charles Titus.
3. In the comedy movie "Spaceballs", the main characters find a secret entrance in the desert with a large Y on the door. What is the name of the alien who lived there?

Answer: Yogurt

Mel Brooks released the comedy film "Spaceballs" in 1987. The movie was mainly a parody of the original "Star Wars" trilogy, but included parodies of other famous sci-fi movies as well. During the film, the main characters stumble upon a large door in the middle of a desert planet.

The door led to the home of the "everlasting know-it-all" Yogurt, a short gold-skinned alien. The character of Yogurt was a spoof of the "Star Wars" character Yoda. He was played by Mel Brooks himself and was a master of the Schwartz, "Spaceballs'" version of the Force.

He mimicked Yoda's unique way of talking by speaking in a Jewish accent. He was also a master of merchandising, as he had a special store inside his lair that featured numerous items that promoted the movie "Spaceballs".
