Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following would be more likely to be successful at catching channel catfish?

Answer: Stinkbait

Catfish rely heavily on their sense of smell to locate food, so baits with a lot of scent fished near the bottom work best.
2. Smallmouth bass are native species in all 48 contiguous states.

Answer: False

In the 1800s, railroads helped to stock smallmouths in western states, by releasing fish fry from their water tanks as they crossed rivers and lakes on trestles.
3. Which of these lures is a topwater?

Answer: Zara Spook

Although the other lures can be used very close to the surface, a Zara Spook is a pure topwater lure, drawing explosive strikes when walked across the surface.
4. What is the state fish of Maryland?

Answer: Rockfish

The rockfish, also known as striped bass or striper, is abundant in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The Chesapeake is one of the prime breeding areas for this popular and tasty gamefish.
5. Which of the following is another name for a crappie?

Answer: Sac au lait

In cajun country, crappies are called sac au lait, which is French for "bag of milk". They call them this because of their delicate, sweet taste.
6. If you are night fishing in mid-summer on a calm pond, with an overcast sky, which of the following lures is more likely to draw a hit from a largemouth bass?

Answer: Black Jitterbug

Believe it or not, bass, like most fish that feed at night, see the color black better against a dark sky than brighter colors. Jitterbug is my favorite topwater when the sun sets because bass seem to go crazy when one passes overhead. They cannot resist!
7. I am fishing the Jersey surf, using a big wad of clams for bait. My rod doubles over, and I set the hook. Which of the following is NOT at the end of my line?

Answer: Killifish

While a killifish, a common type of minnow, is some times found at the end of my line, it is usually I who impaled it there, so I could use it for bait!
8. Snagging salmon using weighted treble hooks has always been against the law on the Salmon River in New York.

Answer: False

Although the ethics of snagging are questionable at best, it was legal to snag until just a few years back. Proponents of the now banned practice justified it by saying that the salmon were going to die after the spawn anyway, so why not take them by any means possible?
9. Which of the following species would you NOT want to lip grab if you caught one?

Answer: Slippery bass

The teeth on a Slippery Bass, also known as Tautog, are made for crunching shellfish, and a big 'tog could probably sever your finger if you put it in his mouth.
10. What is the modern name of the former "Zero Hour Bomb Company", inventors of the first spincasting reel?

Answer: Zebco

The company used to manufacture bombs for the US military during World War I and World War II. When the wars ended, I guess they wanted to kick back and just go fishing. Sounds like a good idea to me!
