Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the cross section of a "standard" bamboo fly rod look like?

Answer: Hexagon

A tapered polygon of six angles and six sides, glued together to form a rod length. Bamboo rods make some of the most beautiful fly rods in the world to own.
2. Which of these is not a standard fly rod handle?

Answer: Pistol Grip

Pistol grips are usually associated with bait casting rods. Fly rods are also offered in straight and cigar shaped grips too.
3. What is the line called that connects the fly line to the reel?

Answer: Backing

The backing is made of braided dacron of around 20 to 35 pound test and it does two jobs.
First, to take up the space between the bottom of the reel and the bottom of the fly line.
Second, on the slim chance you hook on to a monster-size fish, you will not run out of line while playing the fish. (Most fly lines are around 90 feet long and use 75 to 150 yards of backing.)
4. The Federation of Fly Fishing guide (FFFg) rule #17389-c states: all bamboo fly rods must have the line guides held on by red thread only.

Answer: False

I just made this rule up to try to trick you. Bamboo rod makers do use red thread, and some custom rod makers will use whatever color or colors you want them to.
"The (FFFg) is a grade of black powder, but that is another quiz."
5. Fly rods use three types of guides, the tip guide is at the top of the rod, the stripping guide is at the bottom, what are all the middle guides called?

Answer: Snake guides

Snake guides have a high, rounded arch design. These guides are available in single and double foot styles and are made of titanium or other hard metals. The high arch allows the fly line to move freely and smoothly during casting and reeling.
6. What rod building material was used by rod makers after bamboo, but before graphite?

Answer: Fiberglass

Fiberglass fly rods have several redeeming features. First, and probably most importantly to most anglers, is that they are very inexpensive in comparison to graphite and bamboo fly rods. Secondly, fiberglass fly rods at times seem virtually indestructible. Fiberglass rods are impervious to heat, cold, water, and the sun.
7. Which of these is not a standard type of reel seat used on fly rods?

Answer: Spring lock

Up and down reel locks are used on most fly rods, the sliding ring system is used on some of the smallest and lightest fly rods, giving them an even lighter overall weight.
8. Let's say you have a fly line that is WF-5-F. The "5" is the line's weight, the second "F" stands for floating. What does the "WF" stand for?

Answer: Weight Forward

Besides "WT" weight forward, fly lines also come in "ST" shooting taper, "DT" double taper, "BT" bass taper and "L" level line.
Along with "F" floating, fly lines also come in "S" sinking, "I" intermediate level and "F/S" sinking tip only.
9. If you can "crack-a-whip", then you can cast a fly rod.

Answer: False

Cracking-the-whip is the worst way to cast the fly rod, you will make air-knots in your leaders and snap off the fly, plus it's not good for the fly rod.

A smooth stroke by raising and lowering the shoulder and elbow is best, bending at the wrist only will cause the whip to crack.
10. There are many types of cast you can use with a fly rod. There is the roll cast, flip cast, reach cast, drop cast, forward cast and many others. Which of these is another way to use your fly rod?

Answer: Dabbling

Dabbling is to hold your fly rod out at arms length and drop your fly into pockets where fish are holding. This works well around rocks and log jams.
