Mixed Lyrics Trivia Questions

1. "You Suffer. But Why" Who sang the song and what is the name of the song?

From Quiz
One Liners & Couplets, Rhan Pump

Answer: Napalm Death - "You Suffer"

Right off the bat: "You Suffer" is precisely 1.316 seconds long. The lyrics above are the complete lyrics of the song. It was released as a giveaway single in the UK in 1989 as a split single with "Mega-Armageddon Death Pt. 3" by Electro Hippies on the b side (another song that lasts one second). It was recorded for their first album entitled "Scum", which was released in the UK in 1987. Napalm Death are the kings of the Grind-core genre and this song is perhaps the most legendary song of that genre ever released. Mainly due to British DJ God John Peel's reaction after first playing it on his radio show. He played the song and was very confused that the song ended right after he put the needle on the record. He thought something had gone wrong and played it some more until he realized that this was the entire song! And via John's reaction Napalm Death instantly garnered a degree of infamy. Unless somewhere in this world there is a teeny tiny Top Forty for ants or something (in which case this might have well been the number one record of all time) the single did not chart anywhere ever. In 2005, 'Scum' was voted the 50th best British album of all time by Kerrang magazine! Me personally? I LOVE Napalm Death. I saw them a few months back (finally, for the first time) and was is loud heaven - this is one band that does not ever disappoint if you are into that sort of music..

2. "Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes, You'd know what a drag it is To see you" Who sang the song and what is the name of the song?

From Quiz One Liners & Couplets, Parto Kvar

Answer: Bob Dylan - "Positively 4th Street"

'Positively 4th Street'. I could go on and on about why Dylan is my favorite living musician. Or I could keep things simple and just point to this song as a major reason. Originally released as a single in September of 1965. Even as a six year old I could completely relate to the attitude of the lyrics. Which is not all that difficult when you are an anti-social little creep like I was. Eventually the song was added to the Bob Dylan's 'Greatest Hits' LP that was released one day after my seventh birthday in 1967 (That'd be the 'Greatest Hits' album with the great Milton Glaser poster in it - and I take great pride in being able to say I was probably the only seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven year old kid who had that poster very prominently hung in my bedrooms before moving to Germany when I was 12. The LP peaked at number ten on the charts and the single at number seven (should'a went to number one imo, EASILY one of his best ever single releases!)

3. "I'm worth a million in prizes" Who sang the song and what is the name of the song?

From Quiz One Liners & Couplets. Partie Trois

Answer: Iggy Pop - "Lust For Life"

After being without a band for many years David Bowie decided to help his pal Iggy form a new band and start a solo career. The first album they did together was called 'The Idiot' and the band that Bowie put together for that tour included himself on keyboards. Needless to say each and every show on that tour sold out quickly. Probably the first time that had ever happened to Iggy. That was in March of 1977. "Lust For Life" was recorded immediately after the tour ended (The entire album took a mere eight days to finish - and that includes writing the songs for it!) and issued at the very end of August of 1977. Nobody can say that Iggy did not make it as easy as possible for people to like him and buy his record this time around. From the inviting photo of him smiling at the potential buyer on the cover (a first for him) to the sometimes very positive themed tracks on the album ("Success", "Fall In Love With Me" and the stone classic title track "Lust For Life") some of us Iggy fans were certain this album would be a contender to go into the Top Ten. The ensuing tour was also much more satisfying for us Iggy fans as well simply because the halls were not filled with a sold out crown of which 3/4s had come to see Bowie (who admittedly kept as low a profile on stage during the previous tour as he possibly could) and who were doing the hardest to try and get over to the side of the stage that Bowie was playing on. On the "Lust For Life" tour you basically had a crowd of almost 100% Iggy fans. On "The Idiot" tour you had morons calling out for "Changes", "Rebel Rebel" and "Young Americans" who felt ripped off when not one single Bowie song was sung. On the "Lust For Life" tour you had a few who showed up screaming "Where's Bowie" and who felt ripped off that he was not on this tour. I am 100% convinced that nobody knows more about trying to please the stupid than Iggy does. The song "Lust For Life" itself has become a beloved classic from its time and has been used in everything from movie soundtracks ('Trainspotting') to various TV commercials. Certainly the song has made Iggy a lot of money. And before ANYBODY dares to start making mouth noises about Iggy selling out: If anybody in Rock and Roll deserves to finally have seen their payday it is Iggy Pop. He darn near died for Rock and Roll and the way many Iggy fans see it, "Lust For Life" gave him some of the financial rewards he had deserved for decades. It is also one of the few rock songs that could almost exist if only the drum track and nothing else had been released. The drum riff (and yes: this song is BUILT around that "riff" so that the beat takes the place of the guitar etc) is one of rock music's Top Five catchiest EVER and even if you do not really know the song you KNOW the beat the moment you hear it... So how did the record do sales-wise you ask? It sold really well at first. It could well have maybe gone into the Top Ten. But then a sad thing happened: Elvis Presley died. Which caused RCA Records to ignore every single record they had just released and focus purely on Elvis Presley and being sure there was ample copies of every single one of his records for grieving fans to buy. Promotion for 'Lust For Life' stopped dead in its tracks! It never made it higher than 120 on the Billboard charts :-(

4. "And she lit a candle for my love luck, And eighteen bucks went up in smoke." Who sang the song and what is the name of the song?

From Quiz One Liners & Couplets. Part The Second

Answer: Joni Mitchell - "Song For Sharon"

Not a hit for Joni, but in my opinion the best song on her "Hejira" album (an album that took me YEARS to appreciate at the time). This particular line jumped out at me on first listen however. The album was released in November of 1976 and was a complete departure for her, musically speaking, from anything she had done before. When it first came out it did not sell as well as any of her previous albums, going to number twenty two on the charts in Canada, number thirteen in the USA and number eleven in the UK.

5. "Looks like we made it/Look how far we've come my baby/We might have took the long way/We knew we'd get there someday" Name this 1998 Canadian singer's tune!

From Quiz Only One Key Will Fit the Lock

Answer: "You're Still the One"

In January 1998 Canadian singer Shania Twain's song "You're Still the One" was released. It first appeared in 1997 on her "Come on Over" album. On the US Billboard Hot 100 the song peaked in the number two position and was Shania Twain's first top ten hit. This was considered a crossover single winning her the Best Country Song as well as Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the 1999 Grammy Awards. This single landed in the number 66 position on the Billboard All-Time Hot 100 Top Songs.

6. The following lyrics are from a song called "The Ex": "I heard she's great and her new boyfriend's lame. Well, she can go to hell, I'll never be the same." What Canadian band released this song in 2003?

From Quiz This Is Not a Love Song

Answer: Billy Talent

Billy Talent formed in Mississauga, Ontario in the early '90s, though they were not well-known until several years later. "The Ex" was a single off of their first mainstream album recorded under the name Billy Talent; it was simply called "Billy Talent" (2003). The band took their name from a fictional guitar player named Billy Talent in Michael Turner's novel "Hard Core Logo" (1993).

7. Which grunge classic contains the often-misquoted lyrics, "A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido"?

From Quiz Karaoke Hell

Answer: Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

I actually did not know these lyrics until seeing them on a karaoke screen, some 15 years after first hearing this song. These lyrics are repeated several times throughout the song, widely seen as the signature "grunge anthem." Judging from these lyrics, Kurt Cobain and his bandmates had quite the world-view.

8. "I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance, Never settle for the path of least resistance, Livin' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin'." What song is it?

From Quiz Songs I Love Part Three

Answer: I Hope You Dance

"I Hope You Dance" is sung by Lee Ann Womack. It features Sons of the Desert. It came out on her CD "I Hope You Dance" on May 23, 2000.

9. Ernie the fast milko, created by the well known lyricist Benny Hill, had a rival for Sue's attention. Who was he?

From Quiz Obscure and Impossible Lyrics

Answer: Two Ton Ted

Once Benny Hill's "Ernie - The Fastest Milkman in the West" gets into your head, you are doomed. Two Ton Ted from Teddington killed Ernie in a bun fight. Trigger was Ernie's horse and the others are just made up.

10. "Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable, and life's like an hour glass glued to the table, and no one can find the rewind button, girl". What is the name of the song?

From Quiz Songs I Love Part Two

Answer: Breathe (2 A.M.)

Anna Nalick sings "Breathe (2 A.M.)". This song is on her CD "Wreck of the Day"(2005).

11. "Dug a trench out, laid down there with a shovel up out of reach somewhere." What song are these lyrics from?

From Quiz Songs You Can Hear on my iPod

Answer: "Bleed It Out"-Linkin Park

These lyrics are from the song "Bleed It Out" by Linkin Park. This song was another of the band's biggest hits. It peaked to the number three spot on the Hot Mainstream Rock Charts.

12. In the Talking Heads song "Heaven," when will everyone leave the party?

From Quiz Lyrics Potpourri II
