Individual Numbers in Songs Trivia Questions

1. Outkast had a monster hit in 2003 with "Hey Ya". What artiste completed the line-up alongside Big Boi?

From Quiz
Zooming in on 33 1/3

Answer: Andre 3000

André "3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, as Outkast, are considered to be one of the most influential hip hop duos of all time. The pair originally wanted to be called 'The Misfits', but that was already being used so they hit upon 'outcast' as a synonym and altered the spelling. "Hey Ya" was a track from their double album, "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below", released in 2003, both members taking an individual style for their album but releasing them together under the banner of Outkast. The video of "Hey Ya" featured Andre 3000 playing all the members of a much larger band. Phoenix Rising's smpdit completed this question and can definitely shake it like a Polaroid picture.

2. What song from the 1950s originally began with the words "One night of sin is what I'm now paying for" but was rewritten with more romantic lyrics for a teenage audience?

From Quiz One of the Oldies

Answer: Elvis Presley's "One Night"

Written by Dave Bartholomew and Earl King (who also wrote under the names "Pearl King" and "E.C. King"), and first recorded by Smiley Lewis, "One Night" was sung by Elvis Presley in two different versions, with the original lyrics in January 1957 and with a less explicit version, considered more appropriate for his teenage fans, in February 1957. "One night of sin / is what I'm now paying for. / The things that I did and saw / would make the earth stand still" became instead "One night with you / is what I'm now praying for. / The things that we two could plan / Would make my dreams come true." Instead of reflecting on the consequences of a forbidden one-night affair, Elvis seems to be looking forward to one, although his young fans (the future nannywoo included) may have been thinking ahead to a wedding night.

3. "Beauty queen of only eighteen." This is the opening line to which song by Maroon 5?

From Quiz Eighteen

Answer: She Will Be Loved

"She Will Be Loved" was released by Maroon 5 as a single in 2004. It appeared on their debut album, "Songs About Jane" (2002). Interestingly, Kelly Preston was in the song's music video.

4. In 1970 Tony Orlando and Dawn released the hit single, "Knock Three Times". How many girls were in the backing group, Dawn, when they toured and had their television show?

From Quiz Songs With the Number Three in the Title

Answer: Two

Tony Orlando recorded "Candida" and "Knock Three Times" in 1970 under the name Dawn because of a contract conflict. When he recorded the tunes session background singers were used. When the song became a hit Tony Orlando asked Stax Records backing singers Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson to tour as Dawn and promote the record with him. Joyce's sister, Pamela, was unable to be part of the group because she was touring with Aretha Franklin at the time. Their touring efforts paid off when "Knock Three Times" reached Number One. They released subsequent hits such as "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" and "Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose?". In 1974 the group was offered their own variety show. Their last Billboard Hot 100 Top Forty single came in 1976 with "Cupid". They continued to reunite for occasional concerts and benefit shows.

5. Which singer took "Two Faces Have I" to Number Six on the US Pop Charts in 1963?

From Quiz The Number Two in Song Titles

Answer: Lou Christie

"Two Faces Have I" was Lou Christie's first Top Ten hit. Earlier in 1963 he scored a Number 24 hit with "The Gypsy Cried". His chart success led to a tour with Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars that was interrupted by a stint in the Army. When he returned from duty he topped the US charts in 1965 with "Lightnin' Strikes". He continued to release hit singles and his final entry into the US Top Ten came in 1969 when he released "I'm Gonna Make You Mine". "Blue on Blue" and "Blue Velvet" were two 1963 Top Ten hits by Bobby Vinton. "Everybody" by Tommy Roe reached the Number Three slot the same year. Del Shannon scored hits with "Runaway" and "Hats off to Larry" in the early sixties.

6. Although they came from New York, which geographically-named band had US Number Five hit with "Still the One" in 1976?

From Quiz Number One in Song Titles

Answer: Orleans

Guitarist John Hall formed Orleans in 1972 in Woodstock, New York. After rounding out the band with four other members the group began playing the college circuit and club scenes. They were signed by Asylum Records and released "Let There Be Music" in 1975. They followed up with the Top Ten hit, "Dance With Me", and began touring with Melissa Manchester. The following year John Hall left the band to pursue a solo career on the heels of their subsequent hit, "Still the One". The band released "Love Takes Time" without Hall in 1979 but disbanded shortly after the success of the Number 11 release. They reformed a few years later and continued to perform. In 2006 Hall was elected to the US House of Representatives but he occasionally reunited with the band for significant appearances.

7. What singer is noted, amongst others, for the 1977 hit "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad"?

From Quiz Zooming in on 33 1/3

Answer: Meatloaf

The song was released as a single off the powerful album, "Bat Out of Hell". With Jim Steinman's amazing lyrics, Meat Loaf's powerful and very versatile voice, and Todd Rundgren's guitar playing, how could it NOT be a hit? Fun Fact. When the single was released in Japan, it was translated as "66% is Good Enough"- mathematically correct, I guess, but lyrically insipid. This question was introduced by Phoenix Rising's ozzz2002 who was at one of Meatloaf's concerts in 1978 and was blown away by his performance. "Meatloaf" he said, "almost blew the roof off the old Hordern Pavilion in Sydney".

8. Alright, how about current pop, and a 2008 hit for Tori Amos: "And if it seems / I'm floating in the darkness / Well, I can't believe that I would keep / Keep you from flying." Which song is this?

From Quiz A Thousand Song Titles -- That's a Lot

Answer: 1000 Oceans

Born in 1963 as Myra Ellen Amos, Tori is also a composer, as well as a vocalist. She has released over 13 studio albums and has been nominated for at least eight Grammy Awards.

9. What 1963 hit song for the girl group The Chiffons was inspired by an aria in Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly"?

From Quiz One of the Oldies

Answer: One Fine Day

"One Fine Day" was written by Carole King and Garry Goffin, inspired by the aria "Un Bel Di" from the opera "Madama Butterfly" by Puccini. In an achingly beautiful aria, Butterfly sings that "un bel di" (one beautiful day) her lover, American naval officer B. F. Pinkerton, will return to claim her and their child, but when he arrives he brings an American wife with him. "One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl" expresses the same, probably equally misguided, belief.

10. "Two days past eighteen, he was waiting for the bus in his army green." This song was sung by which country band?

From Quiz Eighteen

Answer: Dixie Chicks

"Travelin' Soldier" was originally written and recorded in 1996 by Bruce Robinson. In late 2002, the Dixie Chicks covered the song. It was found on their third album, "Home".

11. Which Philadelphia-based group released the US Top Forty singles "Three Ring Circus" and "Sideshow" in 1974?

From Quiz Songs With the Number Three in the Title

Answer: Blue Magic

Blue Magic took "Three Ring Circus" to Number 36 in 1974. They also released the Number Eight single, "Sideshow", the same year. MFSB guitarist Bobby Eli composed both songs and played guitar on the sessions. The group followed in 1975 with "We're On The Right Track" and "Chasing Rainbows" then embarked on a world tour. In addition to their smooth vocal ballads the members also included choreography in their performances. By the late seventies the Disco era had an adverse impact on the band's success and their string of hits ended. Swedish group Blue Swede released a cover of "Hooked on A Feeling" in the seventies. Psychedelic band Blue Cheer had seventies hits including a cover of "Summertime Blues". Blue Oyster Cult formed in 1967 but didn't have a US Top Twenty hit until "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" hit the charts in 1974.

12. The duet, "It Takes Two", was a Number Fourteen hit on the 1967 US Billboard charts. Who sang the duet with Marvin Gaye?

From Quiz The Number Two in Song Titles

Answer: Kim Weston

As a solo artist for Motown Kim Weston released "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)". She had a major hit with "It Takes Two" with Marvin Gaye which led to the release of an album of songs by the pair titled "Take Two" in 1966. Weston left Motown in 1967 following a royalties dispute and later recorded an LP of duets with Johnny Nash. She has since joined Motown artists on occasional reunion tours. Mary Wells recorded an entire album of duets with Marvin in 1964 titled "Together". Some of the duets with Marvin and Tammi Terrell included "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing". Gladys Knight and the Pips recorded a version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". It has also been recorded by Marvin Gaye, The Miracles, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many others.

13. Who did Rolling Stone list as the 50th greatest guitarist of all time, in their 2003 article "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"?

From Quiz Nifty Fifty

Answer: Pete Townshend

In a special collector's issue published in August 2003, Eddie Van Halen was number 70, George Harrison was number 21, and Johnny Ramone was number 16. The top three (in order of 3, 2, 1) were B.B. King, Duane Allman, and Jimi Hendrix. For the most part, I completely disagree with this list. I think Rolling Stone confused "greatest guitarists" with "most influential musicians/ public figures". Like, I love Kurt Cobain - but I don't think he quite earned the title of the 12th greatest guitarist of all time.

14. Which band had a busy 2012 releasing three studio albums titled "Uno!", "Dos!" and "Tré!"?

From Quiz Zooming in on 33 1/3

Answer: Green Day

Originally formed as a punk rock band in 1987, Green Day is seen as one of the groups that helped popularise punk music in the United States. The band's name was chosen to reflect their interest in the drug scene. From 2011, the band (using the name Foxboro Hot Tubs) played a number of secret shows where they performed new material. Lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong said at the time "We are at the most prolific and creative time in our lives... This is the best music we've ever written, and the songs just keep coming." In 2012 Green Day recorded 37 songs for this project and debated releasing a double album. However, they decided on a trilogy and the result was the albums "Uno!", "Dos!" and "Tré!" released later in that year. Each album cover featured the face of a different band member. In 2013, the documentary "Cuatro!" was produced, reflecting the creative process for their trilogy project. Billie Joe Armstrong commented that each of the three albums has a totally different vibe. "The first one is power pop. The second is more garage-y, Nuggets-type rock. And the third is supposed to be epic." The trilogy was well-received by music critics, although fans were less enthusiastic if sales numbers and chart performance are considered. (Footnote) The album titles all include an upside down exclamation mark at their starts, however, the FT system does not allow that to work when copied and pasted. The end result came out as an "i" so it was omitted. It was a red-letter day when Phoenix Rising's psnz finished working on this question.

15. In what Burt Bachrach / Hal David song recorded by the 5th Dimension in 1970 and featured in an episode of "Glee" in 2010 does the singer claim she should be happy about not having to fry an extra egg?

From Quiz One of the Oldies

Answer: One Less Bell to Answer

The first lines go: "One less bell to answer / One less egg to fry / One less man to pick up after / I should be happy / But all I do is cry." It is said that Hal David came up with the idea for the song at a party when one guest canceled at the last minute and the hostess rationalized that it was just "one less bell to answer". Bachrach's music would make any lyrics sound good, and the song has been recorded by many artists since 1970, including Barbra Streisand, Vanessa Williams, Cheryl Crow, and Kristin Chenoweth (with Matthew Morrison).

16. "Stuck in her daydream. Been this way since eighteen." Which singer sang the song "A Team"?

From Quiz Eighteen

Answer: Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran's debut album, released in 2011, was called "+". His debut single from the album, released a few months prior to the album, was called "A Team".

17. Which Motown singer took "Two Lovers" to the US Top Ten in 1962?

From Quiz The Number Two in Song Titles

Answer: Mary Wells

Before Smokey Robinson's composition, "My Guy", became a Number One success for Mary Wells in 1964 she had hits with "Two Lovers", "The One Who Really Loves You" and "You Beat Me to the Punch". When "I Don't Want to Take a Chance" made it to Number 33 in 1961 Mary became the first female Motown artist to have a US Top Forty single. At the height of her success she left Motown but never realized the same level of success she had with the label. She died in 1992 of cancer at age 49. "Clean Up Woman" was done by Betty Wright in 1972. Brenda Holloway was signed by Motown and released "Every Little Bit Hurts" and "You've Made Me So Very Happy" in the sixties. "I Got A Feeling" and "Lost" were sixties releases by Barbara Randolph.

18. "One Bad Apple" was a US Number One hit for which family group in 1971?

From Quiz Number One in Song Titles

Answer: The Osmonds

Songwriter George Jackson had the Jackson Five in mind when he composed "One Bad Apple". The Jacksons considered doing the song but recorded "ABC" instead. The Osmonds took "One Bad Apple" to the top spot for five weeks in the US. Jackson also composed their follow-up Top Twenty hit, "Double Lovin'". In the late fifties some of the Osmond brothers began performing Barbershop Quartet music to raise money to buy hearing aids for George Osmond, Jr. and Tom Osmond. They landed an audition on "The Lawrence Welk Show". Although they were turned down they began performing at Disneyland where Andy Williams' dad saw them and the group ended up becoming regulars on Andy's show. "Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat," was a 1973 hit from the The DeFranco Family. "Never Can Say Goodbye" was a 1971 Number Two for the Jackson Five. "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" stalled at Number Two for the Cowsills in 1967.

19. In which 50 Cent song are they going to "sip Bacardi like it's your birthday"?

From Quiz Nifty Fifty

Answer: In Da Club

"In Da Club" was the first official single from 50 Cent's debut CD "Get Rich or Die Tryin'"(2002). It was his first number-one single in the US, and reached number three in the UK.

20. What song from Led Zeppelin's third album contained the line, "You hear her cries of mercy as the winners toll the bell"?

From Quiz Third Time's A Charm

Answer: Celebration Day

Keeping with the theme for this quiz, it's ironic that this song was the third track on Led Zeppelin's third album. The band simply titled this 1970 album "III". It was produced by guitarist Jimmy Page. "Immigrant Song" could be heard in the 2003 movie "School Of Rock" starring Jack Black, Sarah Silverman and Joan Cusack. Black's character was singing along to it as he and some of his students were riding in his van.

21. "3AM" was a 1997 hit for which band fronted by Rob Thomas?

From Quiz Zooming in on 33 1/3

Answer: Matchbox Twenty

"3AM" is, rather appropriately, the third song on Matchbox 20's debut album, "Yourself or Someone Like You", released in 1997. "3AM" was written by Rob Thomas and his fellow band members in Tabitha's Secret earlier in the 1990s. Rob Thomas was inspired to write "3AM" by his experiences caring for his mother who had cancer while he was a teenager. Thomas chose the specific time of 3:00 AM because bars typically stop serving alcohol by then. When it was first recorded, "3AM" was played at a slower tempo. The speed was increased when Matchbox 20 recorded their first album. Phoenix Rising player Rizeeve is happy to compose and present this question at 3 am, and the team quiz makes it not as lonely as the song lyrics suggest.

22. At age 15 'way back in 1960, what made Kathy Young "Realize / You are the one love that I'll adore. / Tell me you love me / Tell me you're mine once more."?

From Quiz A Thousand Song Titles -- That's a Lot

Answer: A Thousand Stars (in the Sky)

Kathy Young reached teen-aged stardom in 1960 at the age of 15. Her musical career went on the shelf from the Seventies to the middle of the Nineties, but she got back into performing again going into the 2000s. In 2014 she was inducted into the Doo Wop Hall of Fame.

23. "For me you'll always be eighteen and beautiful." Lady Antebellum sings this song, which is called what?

From Quiz Eighteen

Answer: Dancing Away With My Heart

"Dancing Away With My Heart" was released in 2011 by Lady Antebellum. It was found on their third album, "Own the Night".

24. The Browns topped the US Country and Billboard POP charts in 1959 with "Three Bells". For whom were the three bells ringing in the song?

From Quiz Songs With the Number Three in the Title

Answer: Jimmy Brown

Although the song was titled "Three Bells", it was often called "Little Jimmy Brown". "Three Bells" was released by Dick Flood but the version by The Browns became the chart-topper. The Browns were a family group comprised of Jim Ed Brown with his sisters Maxine and Bonnie who garnered national attention singing on Ernest Tubb's radio show. In the lyrics of the Grammy-nominated song the bells rang for Jimmy Brown's birth, wedding and funeral. A host of other artists have recorded cover versions including Roy Orbison, Ray Charles and Alison Krauss and Union Station. "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" was one of many novelty songs released by Little Jimmy Dickens. "Jimmy Mack" was a 1967 release by Martha and the Vandellas. Jimmy Jones co-wrote and released the original version of "Handy Man" in 1960.

25. Who had a Top Ten hit in the US in 1980 with "One in a Million You"?

From Quiz Number One in Song Titles

Answer: Larry Graham

Larry Graham was the bass guitar player for Sly and the Family Stone and went on to be the founder of Graham Central Station. He was credited with being one of the innovators of the slap technique of bass playing. He left Sly and the Family Stone in 1972 to form Graham Central Station and released five solo albums in the eighties. "One in a Million You" was his best selling single and was from his 1980 album of the same name. In the nineties he recorded an album under the banner of Graham Central Station titled "GCS 2000" as a collaborative effort with Prince and also played bass for Prince on tour. "Steal Away" was a 1980 hit for Robbie Dupree. Benny Mardones released "Into The Night" in 1980. "Give Me The Night" was charted the same year by George Benson.

26. According to a song by Monty Harper, he has fifty ways to do what?

From Quiz Nifty Fifty

Answer: say no to drugs

Harper is an American singer-songwriter, who writes and performs his tunes for children. The song "Fifty Ways to Say No" is not available on any recordings, but the lyrics are posted on www.montyharper.com.

27. Which band released the 1973 album "Tres Hombres"?

From Quiz Zooming in on 33 1/3

Answer: ZZ Top

ZZ Top formed in Houston, Texas in 1969 and by the time they signed their first recording contract in 1970, they had a settled line-up of Billy Gibbons (guitar, lead vocals), Dusty Hill (bass, vocals), and Frank Beard (drums, percussion) that were still together 50 years later. Gibbons and Hill sported full-length beards for much of their career whilst, ironically, Frank Beard remained clean shaven. Taking their name from a portmanteau of BB King and Texan Blues singer ZZ Hill, ZZ King quickly became ZZ Top. The name reflected their blues/boogie sound. "Tres Hombres" (1973) was their third album and was their first album to enter the US Charts, reaching the number eight position on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It sported the hit, "La Grange", about a brothel in a small town in Texas, which in part inspired the movie "Best Little Whore House in Texas". This Phoenix Rising question was escrita por un solo hombre 1nn1.

28. A little off the beaten path on this one. We're going well past just one thousand to mention an album and single by metal band Disturbed from 2005 which became their second consecutive number 1 on the "Billboard" 200 in the US. Which title is it?

From Quiz A Thousand Song Titles -- That's a Lot

Answer: Ten Thousand Fists

Disturbed was formed in Chicago in 1994 and originally called themselves Brawl, but took the name Disturbed in 1996. They have a mascot known as "The Guy." Their musical style also sometimes referred to as "nu metal" or "alternative metal." They were nominated for Grammy awards in 2009 and 2011.

29. "Daddy drives an eighteen-wheeler." Which band sings "Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)"?

From Quiz Eighteen

Answer: Alabama

"Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)" was released by Alabama in 1984. It was the band's twelfth number one, and was on their "Roll On" album (1984).

30. Len Barry had a US Number Two solo hit in 1965 with "1-2-3". Which group did Barry sing lead with when they recorded such early sixties hits as "Bristol Stomp", "You Can't Sit Down" and "Hully Gully Baby"?

From Quiz Songs With the Number Three in the Title

Answer: The Dovells

Len was singing lead vocals for the Dovells before going solo. He began his singing career in a group called The Brooktones and used his birth name, Len Borisoff, when listed as a member of the group. They released a regional song titled "No, No, No" before breaking up and reforming as the Dovells. In addition to appearing on shows such as "American Bandstand" (1957) the Dovells also sang "Bristol Stomp" and "Do The New Continental" in the 1962 film, "Don't Knock the Twist". The Dartells recorded the Number 11 hit, "Hot Pastrami", in 1962. A version of "You Belong to Me" was done by The Duprees in 1962. "Could This Be Magic" and "Don't Ask Me To Be Lonely" were late fifties hits for The Dubs.
