Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hall and Oates, 1983
Answer: One on One
Hall and Oates put this "ONE" song on the charts early in 1983, a follow-up to their number one hit "Maneater". It would make number seven on the American Billboard chart.
2. Three Dog Night, 1969
Answer: One
Originally written by Harry Nilsson, it was a Top Five hit for Three Dog Night. It was inspired by a time Harry got a busy signal on an attempted phone call.
3. The Osmonds, 1971
Answer: One Bad Apple
Written by songwriter George Jackson, he planned on the Jackson 5 recording it, and many thought it WAS the Jackson 5 who sung it, as their styles were similar. It would be a Number One hit for the Osmonds in 1971, and a top five song for the entire year.
4. The Chiffons, 1963
Answer: One Fine Day
Penned by Carole King, this hit was thought to be on its way to Little Eva. But it was shelved and given to The Tokens, who passed it to The Chiffons. They would bring it to number five on the Billboard chart in 1963.
5. The Wallflowers, 1996
Answer: One Headlight
"One Headlight" was not able to make the Billboard Hot 100 due to rules about what charts it could be on, but it was a grand success on airplay charts, and the song would earn The Wallflowers two Grammy Awards in 1998. Jakob Dylan and his band were the darlings of critics in 1996 and 1997, but they faded quickly after this album.
6. Barenaked Ladies, 1998
Answer: One Week
Canadians Barenaked Ladies combined countless pop culture references and impressive diction and speed that fans found difficult to sing along to on their way to their only Number One hit on the Billboard chart. The song proved prophetic; they would stay at Number One for...one week.
7. Murray Head, 1984
Answer: One Night in Bangkok
The concept album by Time Rice and two members of ABBA, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, "Chess" would produce this hit for British actor/singer Murray Head. It would make number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and the song would lead the writers to form a musical based on the album.
8. Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men, 1995
Answer: One Sweet Day
Mariah Carey's album "Daydream" would produce what Rolling Stone magazine called the greatest music collaboration of all time. The song, sung with white-hot artists at the time Boyz II Men, would set the bar for weeks spent at Number One on the Billboard chart, staying there for an unprecedented 16 weeks. This stood for 22 years until it was finally matched by "Despacito" in 2017.
9. Fifth Dimension, 1970
Answer: One Less Bell to Answer
Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, it was originally done by Keely Smith. A producer for Fifth Dimension dusted off the song a few years later and the song would reach number two for the group. The song is on a short list of pop songs that reference fried eggs.
10. Whitney Houston, 1988
Answer: One Moment in Time
This song was the American theme song for the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. It would be a worldwide hit for Whitney Houston, making the top five in numerous countries including the United States. Its performance and grandeur showcased her ability to sing an anthem, and led to her getting the gig of National Anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl, which still is looked on as arguably being the greatest performance of the anthem, certainly at the Super Bowl.
