Olympic Summer Games Trivia Questions

1. Though coming from Kansas, one Phoenix Rising member has the nickname 'Tacobowler'. He follows Mexican sport with alacrity and was very excited when which race-walker won the silver in Rio de Janeiro, in 2016?

From Quiz
When the Champs are Down

Answer: Lupita González

The silver medals in Rio contained 30% recycled materials. Lupita (real name María Guadalupe González Romero) was the silver medallist but subsequently won the IAAF Race Walking Challenge. She was born in Tlalnepantla, Mexico, and though a favourite to win in Rio, suffered in the humid conditions and was unable to achieve gold. _________________________

2. In the 2016 Olympics the 100 meter winner for men was the Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt with 9.81 seconds. Who came second by a margin of 0.08 seconds?

From Quiz Just a Fraction More

Answer: Justin Gatlin

American Justin Gatlin was second and was 0.02 faster than Canadian Andre de Grasse. The Canadian was in turn 0.02 seconds faster than Jamaican Yohan Blake who finished just 0.01 seconds ahead of South African Akani Simbine. Fine margins indeed. Usain Bolt also won gold in the 200 meters race.

3. At which Olympic Games was the first time we saw athletes parading together at the closing ceremony, regardless of nationality?

From Quiz Summer Olympics: Being First May Not Mean Gold

Answer: Melbourne (1956)

It was at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 that a letter from a 17 year old Australian schoolboy (John Ian Wing) suggested to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that athletes should enter the closing ceremony as one nation. His letter suggested that war, politics and nationalities should be forgotten. This tradition has generally been maintained ever since.

4. The first Olympiad in the modern era to include a decathlon was the 1904 Olympics in St Louis. The gold medal was won by Tom Keily and the seven competitors came from just two countries. Identify the two countries participating.

From Quiz History of the Olympic Decathlon

Answer: Ireland and USA

This competition was noteworthy because all ten events took place on the same day. Great Britain offered Keily a free trip if he would represent Great Britain. Keily elected to pay his own way and competed for Ireland.

5. The first Modern Olympics in 1896 did not award gold medals to the first place finishers in an event. Instead, a first place win got you a silver medal and a branch. Which type of branch?

From Quiz The Early Modern Olympics (1896-1912)

Answer: Olive Branch

It was surprising to find out the winner received a silver medal and a olive branch and the runners-up got a bronze medal and a laurel branch. I would have thought the laurel would have a higher rank (as in the "laurels of victory"). Retroactively assigning gold, silver, and bronze to the top three finishers, the United States had the largest number of gold medals but Greece had the largest number of medals overall.

6. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. No world records were set on the track events. Why was this?

From Quiz Interesting Facts From The Olympics

Answer: The curves of the track were too tight

Achieving fast times in the running events was almost impossible in these Olympics because the elongated shape of the track featured extremely tight corners at either ends. Other interesting facts from these Olympics include the following. The crouch start was used for the first time in running, and an Australian, Edwin Flack, who'd gone along to watch the games, decided instead to run in the 800 and the 1,500 meters - and won both.

7. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Appropriately, who was the winner of the Marathon?

From Quiz Olympic Marathon Winners

Answer: Spyridon Louis

The route of the first Marathon was between the city of Marathon and the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens. The distance was 40 km and the winner posted a time of just under three hours (2:58:50). Spyridon Louis was an instant national hero and the Olympic stadium in Athens (built for the 2004 Olympics) bears his name. Another Greek, Kharilaos Vasilakos, finished in second place and Hungarian Gyula Kellner in third. Australian Edwin Flack and American Arthur Blake did not finish the race.

8. The 1900 Summer Olympics were held in Paris. What 'first' can be attributed to these games?

From Quiz Olympic Games Firsts

Answer: Women were allowed to participate.

Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain became the first female Olympic champion by winning the ladies' tennis singles title, when beating Helene Prevost of France 6-1, 7-5. To add to that she also won the mixed doubles title 6-2, 6-4, partnering Reggie Doherty. Born in 1870, Charlotte also became Wimbledon Ladies Singles champion on five separate occasions, winning her fifth and final title in 1908 at the remarkable age of thirty seven. In 1961 at the age of ninety, she flew down from her home in Scotland to Wimbledon, to attend a luncheon marking the seventy-fifth year of the championships. Five years later in 1966 she died at the age of ninety-six.

9. Prior to the 1968 Olympics, Mark Spitz held the World record for the 100m Butterfly and had beaten the eventual winner of this Olympic event 10 times in that year. Who beat Mark for gold in the 1968 Olympics in the 100m Butterfly?

From Quiz Olympic Swimming

Answer: Doug Russell (USA)

Doug Russell also went on to win gold in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay. Don Schollander was a 5-time gold medalist over 2 Olympics. Kevin Berry won gold in the 200m Butterfly in Tokyo, and Mike Wenden won gold in the 100m and 200m freestyle in 1968.

11. Which virtually unknown Olympic athlete won 10 gold medals in discontinued Olympic events?

From Quiz 10 Great Olympic Athletes

12. The first Olympics in 1896 included one road cycling event. Which one was it?

From Quiz Road Cycling in the Olympics

Answer: Men's Road Race

At that time, bicycle design had been standardized for about 10 years, but the first Tour de France was still seven years in the future. After that, though, road cycling didn't return to the Olympics until 1912.

13. Which sport would you be playing if you are using the 'penhold' grip?

From Quiz Name That Olympic Sport

Answer: Table tennis

14. Who won the gold medals in the 400 meter hurdles in both 1976 and 1984, and also won a bronze medal in the two-man bobsled in 1990?

From Quiz Track and Field Olympic Athletes

Edwin Moses won 107 consecutive finals and 122 consecutive races from 1977 through 1987. He set the world record in the 400 meter hurdles four different times. Billy Mills won the mens 10,000 meters gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games. Steve Prefontaine particpated in the men's 5000 meter race at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games, but only finished fourth, and was killed in a tragic car accident a year before the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic Games. Frank Shorter won the Gold Medal in the Men's Marathon at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games, and a silver medal in the Men's Marathon at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic Games.

From Quiz When the Champs are Down

Answer: Dawn Fraser

Dawn Fraser was a controversial character who was as well known for her touch of larrikinism as she was for her prowess in the pool. One of the highlights of her career was winning the gold medal for the women's 100 metre freestyle event at the Olympics in 1956, 1960 and 1964. Despite this glittering array she proved she was fallible by being relegated to second spot in her first event, the 400 metres freestyle. Dawn's Olympic career ended after the Tokyo games in 1964 with a trophy cabinet that boasted four Olympic golds (the fourth was in the 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay) and four silver medals, the other three were all relay medals. Pheonix Rising member, Pollucci19, VegemteKid, 1nn1 and ozzz2002 had great pleasure supporting Dawn into second place.

Elaine Thomson also won gold in the 200 meters race.

28. Who finished first in the men's 400m freestyle event at the 1972 Olympics, but is not credited with the gold medal?

From Quiz Summer Olympics: Being First May Not Mean Gold

Prior to the games he had informed the USA swimming authorities that he was taking the drug due to his asthmatic attacks, but they failed to inform the IOC. Brad Cooper was then awarded the gold medal, Steve Genter the silver and Tom McBreen the bronze medal.

29. The 1912 Olympics were held in Stockholm and the gold medal winner was an American who was later stripped of the medal because of questions regarding his amateur status. Who was this exceptional all around athlete?

From Quiz History of the Olympic Decathlon

Answer: Jim Thorpe

The movement to reinstate Thorpe's performance and records began in 1914 and were not successful in his lifetime. On October 13, 1982, the IOC lifted the ban against Thorpe, his name was returned to the record books, and the medals were presented to his children the following year. Jim Thorpe played both professional baseball and football between 1915 and 1928 and was recognized by the Associated Press as the greatest athlete of the first half of the century. Thorpe's 1912 performance was so impressive it would have earned him the silver medal in the 1948 Olympics.
