At the start of Leg 19, teams were informed that it was time for them to head back home to Australia, flying from Mexico (out of Mérida) and heading to Perth on the west coast. Teams left Perth Airport in the order they arrived at the previous Pit Stop and took taxis to the Royal Aero Club at Jandakot Airport for a Road Block task. For this one, one member of each team needed to 'feel grounded', and with this challenge they had to hop into a plane and memorize Australian aviation trivia as told to them by their pilot in the air during an aerobatics session. If they could answer all five questions correctly on the ground, they could receive their next clue. Toni, Pako, Cynthia, Angel, and Kelly did this one.

Answer: Eel

Departing from the beautiful beaches of Caye Caulker, teams were informed that they would be leaving Belize and taking an eight hour bus ride across the border to Mexico, eventually arriving in the city of Campeche on the far end of the Yucatan Peninsula. Upon their arrival, teams would be forced to visit Salon Rincón Colonial, a restaurant in the city, where one team member would need to indulge in a blindfolded taste-test that their partner would need to employ. If the blindfolded team member could identify their foods from the provided menu-- crickets, a desert scorpion, a tarantula, and a hissing cockroach-- they could get their next clue. Any wrong answer meant both team members had to bite a spicy pepper.

Answer: Cancun

With five teams still in isolation due to COVID-19, only five teams raced on from the twelfth Pit Stop of the race in Cartagena, Colombia, heading to the nation of Belize. In an interesting turn, while nine racers flew direct to Belize City, Angel was bumped on a flight to Cancun due to a COVID-19-related itinerary change. It meant that while teams (including her partner, Frankie), raced in Belize City, she would take a ride to the Mexico-Belize border, cross over, and meet her partner later in the leg. All the other teams, in the meantime, left the airport bound for Belize Exotic Adventures at Rockstone Pond, taking the northern highway in a private car, but directing their driver with a Tomtom GPS device. Upon arriving, they had to head into the rainforest, locate a marked bag of firewood and a sack of raw cashews, roast the nuts, and unshell them to get their next clue.

As teams left Türkiye at the start of Leg 10, five total pairs (as well as Beau, still waiting out his isolation in Athens, Greece) tested positive for COVID-19, forcing them to wait until they were cleared by the race's medical team before they could return to the race course. This meant that while Kathy and Chase and Stuart and Glennon, both sidelined for the same reason in earlier legs, would rejoin the remaining teams in Leg 10, Tiffany and Cynthia, Fliss and Tottie, Jodie and Claire, Kelly and Georgia, and Lauren and Steph all had to remain in quarantine. The five remaining teams and the two returning teams left for Bogotá at the start of Leg 10, leaving the Radison Blu Resort & Spa in Çesme, Türkiye.

Answer: Kathy and Chace

Leaving the colourful city of Chefchaouen from the clock tower in Place El Haouta, all remaining teams (save for Kathy and Chace, required to quarantine due to a positive COVID-19 test) were told to make their way to the capital of Greece, Athens, getting there by flying from Tangier, a flight nearly three thousand kilometres across the Mediterranean. Teams departed from the airport in Athens in the order they arrived at the previous Pit Stop discovering that it had snowed in the capital before they arrived.

Answer: Chefchaouen

Eighteen teams(!) competed in the third leg of the race when they combined heats at the Spanish Mosque in Chefchaouen, the Blue City of Morocco. There, after an overnight stay, teams lined up to enter La Botica de la Abuela Aladdin, a soap store, in groups of three to search for a marked stack of soap they would need to replicate in size and colour in the streets outside using provided materials. This task was completed by Claire, Angel, Kathy, Tiffany, Reem, Gabby, Lilli, Mori, Sam, Jamus, Kelly, Vincent, Tottie, Stu, Steph, Glennon, Toni, and Holly; that's nine teams-worth of people!

Answer: Four

Finishing the Road Block, teams needed to get themselves to the Perth City Centre and to the Swan Bells Tower where they had to take control of the tower's famous bells and, in four minutes in the building, ring two bells simultaneously four times. If they could get the timing right, pulling the ropes to get the bells to ring in perfect unison they would get their next clue, otherwise they would need to go to the back of any waiting line.

Teams who stomached the odd Mexican fare could proceed on foot through the city of Campeche to Parque San Roman. There, they would find a number of Mexican piñatas waiting for them and using makeshift slingshots, they would need to knock them down. Once knocked down, racers could break them open searching for one marked candy that they could trade for their next clue. This clue would send them onward to Calle 59, the most famous street in Campeche, where they would need to take a look at the brightly coloured houses on the street. Using colour swatches, they needed to identify, from memory, the colours of twenty-five houses in a row. Doing so would allow them to continue on. The catch was that teams arrived after the hours of operation for the task, so they started it in the order they arrived the following morning.

Answer: The Tortoise and the Hare

To begin their fourth leg, teams made their way to Attica Grove Theatre where teams needed to take turns and use modern-day bows and arrows to hit a bullseye on a provided target. If they could score one direct hit, they would be able to receive their next clue and travel out of Athens to the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion. Once there, they needed to learn and recite the five verses of the classic Aesop fable, 'The Tortoise and the Hare' (race-themed, I know), for a Thespian dressed as Poseidon. If they did so correctly and in unison, they would receive their next clue.

Answer: Ouarzazate

Opening their first clues, teams were told to fly to the city of Ouarzazate, Morocco, the Gateway to the Sahara Desert. Grabbing a car with a private driver, teams had to take a ride to their first destination, Kasbah Tifoultoute, a fortress built hundreds of years ago, to find their first clue waiting outside. Inside would be their first challenge, and for this one, they needed to take a spoonful of spices and, by taste alone, identify what they were presented-- pepper, cumin, turmeric, ginger, and paprika. If they could get all five, they could get their next clue.

Only Jodie and Claire and Tiffany and Cynthia went for the 'Bustle' task, which had them meticulously repairing five metres of damaged fishing nets in the fishing port of Vlychada on the island of Santorini. All other teams got their hands dirty instead, completing 'Hustle'. For this task, they had to grab the catch of the day and weigh out exact amounts of specific fish for the market to sell.

Answer: Rope

As soon as teams had all their colours set up at Calle 59, they received a clue telling them to drive themselves to Hacienda Sotuta de Peón. Upon arriving, teams had to carry bundles of local agave crop, known as henequen, to the nearby factory and have the materials processed. They could then comb the resultant fibres using a specific technique and spin those fibres into five meters of rope. That rope, if made properly, could be traded for their next clue.

As teams finished the Road Block in the late evening, racers spent the night in Belize City (spending leg money on a room at the best Western) before heading onward to Belize Zoo in La Democracia the next morning. There, teams joined the conservation program and assisted the national animal-- the tapir-- by hopping into their enclosures and cleaning them by clearing their waste pools of fecal matter. Once they cleaned out, bleached, and refilled the pool, they could get their next clue.

Answer: Sheep

If teams could pilot their magic carpet ride, they could tear open their Road Block clue and pick their participant. For this one, they had to choose 'someone who's feeling sheepish' and head to the Kokoreççi Asim Usta where they would join a local chef in making kokoreç. To do this, they needed to take a large skewer and wind fresh sheep intestines and stomach lining around it to prepare the delicacy. Once they completed the raw version, they could receive a cooked plate that they needed to eat clean to get their next clue. Mori, Angel, Lilli, Jamus, Tiffany, Flick, Fliss, Vincent, Steph, Georgia, Toni, Claire, and Crystal completed this task.

While some teams took to the streets for 'Street Procession', learning a folk dance to perform in the alleys with locals, others completed 'Sweet Obsession', which had them wrapping mesir pastes in gold foil and tossing them over a balcony for their partners to catch in the courtyards below. In either case, the teams that finished could race on foot to the next Pit Stop with the hope of not being eliminated.

For their final task in Leg 19, teams made their way by taxi to Perth's Burswood region to locate Optus Stadium, one of the largest stadiums in Australia, where they could put on harnesses and proceed to the upper levels to partake in their 'Vertigo' experience. For this, all racers would be suspended above the stadium from the roof, hanging upside-down above the field below. From there, they would need to memorize the six seasons of the Noongar calendar as noted upside-down on the stadium's big screen (Birak, Bunaru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambrang). If they could recite all six correctly, they could get their last clue for the leg.

Teams remained at the Hacienda Sotuta de Peón for their Road Block task in Leg 16, selecting one team member who was 'in the deep end' before sending them to the Sotuta Cenote. For this challenge, both team members had to walk across the property and the selected racers (Pako, Heath, Frankie, Georgia, Cynthia, Lauren, and Chelsea) had to shower and then freedive to the bottom of the cenote to grab their clue waiting at the bottom of the crystal-clear waters.

Teams needed to make their way to the Kemeralti neighbourhood of Izmir for their last task in Leg 6 and, once there, they needed to use traditional poles to carry one hundred gevreks each, delivering them to the street cart at the entrance of Kizlaragasi Hani to receive their next clue. If they could get all two hundred of these circular breads to their destination without dropping them and while keeping their poles above their shoulders, then their deliveries would count for the task.

Answer: The Mummy

It was off to the famous Atlas Studios for teams' Road Blocks in this leg, and for this task, one team member needed to be in a starring role. Becoming a stuntman, the chosen teammate had to be transformed into a mummy before carrying a torch, barefoot, across hot coals, carrying a spear across a narrow balance beam, launching through three rings of fire, and bursting through a brick wall. Completing the stunt course in forty-five seconds allowed them to grab the next clue. Flick, Cynthia, Tammy, Georgia, Pako, Rachel, Claire, Jake, Fliss, and Chelsea were selected to complete this challenge.

Answer: Pako and Mori

Finishing their 'Vertigo' challenge, teams needed to take a cab from West Perth's Optus Stadium and head to East Perth, reaching the Perth Mint to find their Pit Stop. Heath and Toni kept their lead coming all the way from Mexico, checking into the Pit Stop in first place for the second consecutive leg (and the fifth time overall). Pako and Mori, opting to take a penalty instead of completing the Optus Stadium task due to Mori's debilitating fear of heights, arrived fourth, but had to wait out their mandatory fifteen minute wait. It allowed Angel and Frankie to check in in fourth place, eliminating the boys in fifth place with only ten seconds left on the clock.

Answer: Chelsea and Jamus

Once teams completed their Road Block task in the cenote, they could walk to the Pit Stop on the grounds of the Hacienda Sotuta de Peón. What teams didn't know until they arrived was that it was regarded as a 'Virtual Pit Stop'. In essence they would keep on racing with no break; Beau would give teams a placement but they would get their next clue and keep on racing. Pako and Mori were first to arrive. Kelly and Georgia arrived in fourth place, but were required to take a ten-minute penalty for forfeiting the piñata challenge. It dropped them to fifth. At the back of the pack was Chelsea and Jamus but they were surprised to keep on racing upon their arrival at the mat.

Answer: Flick and Gabby

When racers completed their Detour tasks, they could make their way on foot to the thirteenth Pit Stop of the race on the edge of the Caribbean at the Baron Bliss Lighthouse. Chelsea and Jamus managed to beat Heath and Toni to the Pit Stop following thirty-nine meat pies (having failed their first attempt), and their perseverance resulted in their first win of the race. For placing first the pair won a trip to Tasmania from Intrepid valued at over $9,500 AUD. At the end of a tough Detour, it was Flick and Gabby who arrived in a surprise last place finish, leaving the Detour in second-last but falling behind Angel and Frankie on the run to the mat in one of the tightest footraces to date. By a twenty-five second gap, they were eliminated from the race.

Answer: Kathy and Chase

Once teams finished their shopping trip, they could rush along to the next Pit Stop at Parque Bicentenario in the middle of Bogotá's city center where one team would be eliminated. Though they left the market in second place, Angel and Frankie slid ahead of Flick and Gabby on a footrace to the Pit Stop, winning their fourth leg in a row and their sixth of the race. As two teams were marred late in the leg by the need to complete a Speed Bump, the back of the pack was a close fight between Stuart and Glennon and Kathy and Chase with the latter being last to hit the mat. It meant they were eliminated from the race.

Answer: Crystal and Reem

Teams who delivered their gevreks would get their last clue, grab a marked taxi, and proceed to Cumhuriyet Meydani on the edge of the Aegean Sea, the location of their seventh Pit Stop in a race around the world. Angel and Frankie were first to leave the final task and arrive at the mat where, in the absence of Beau Ryan, they were greeted by a robot and informed that they won a family vacation to Nickelodeon World at SeaWorld. It would be their third win of the race. At the end of the leg, Crystal and Reem were the last to step foot on the mat, hitting the Pit Stop after setbacks throughout the day. The friends were eliminated from the race as a result.

Answer: Sam and Alex

Teams wrapped up a long evening in Athens after dining on spanakopita as they were told to race on foot to the central Kotzia Square to find Beau at the next Pit Stop in front of Athens Town Hall. Angel and Frankie landed on the mat first, steps ahead of Lauren and Steph (who led the way to the landmark), to claim their second win of the race, having won their first leg in Marrakech. The back of the pack featured a footrace across the Greek capital and Sam and Alex, who trailed through the Detour, checked in on the Pit Stop in last place. Unfortunately it meant that the couple were eliminated from the race.

After their Road Block, teams had one more stop to make taking them to the sixteen stone Sphinxes on the Atlas Studio grounds to solve a logic puzzle. If they could identify which Sphinx was king and present the correct answer, they could get their next clue and head by taxi to the Pit Stop in the riverbed next to the fort village of Ksar Aït Benhaddou. After working with other teams to complete the Sphinx challenge, it was Kelly and Georgia who checked into the Pit Stop in first place, winning themselves a luxury trip to the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. In the end, Paul and Rachel elected to pull out of the Road Block and the thirty minute time penalty that they incurred as a result was enough to keep them at the back of the pack. The father and daughter were subsequently the first team eliminated from the race.

Answer: Fremantle Clock Tower

Leg 20 started teams near the water as they headed across Perth to Fremantle, ripping open the first clue of the race's second-to-last leg underneath the Fremantle Clock Tower. There, teams determined that they would need to make their way to the ferry terminal to catch a boat to Rottnest Island for one last test of observation. They would open their next clue upon their arrival on the island.

Answer: Lauren and Steph

Having been in isolation for four legs of the race, four of the five COVID-19 positive teams still competing returned in this leg as the course wound its way through Belize's Toledo district. Returning teams knew that they would need to complete a Speed Bump in this leg of the race to keep things fair for their return. Beau handed everyone their next clues at the same time and, with that, they hopped into their vehicles and made their way to the school in Santa Cruz, two hundred and sixty kilometres south. Their next clue would be waiting with their needed gear, and with that, they helped repair and replant in the school's greenhouse to get their next clue.

With five teams still in COVID-19 isolation in Türkiye, only six teams ripped open their clues at the start of Leg 11 and were told to fly four hundred and sixteen miles to the city of Medellín. Teams raced out of José María Córdova International Airport in the order they arrived at the previous Pit Stop, hopped into taxis, and made their way to El Peñól de Guatapé. It was there, at this massive stone landmark, that teams needed to ascend seven hundred steps to the top to find their next clue overlooking Guatapé.

Answer: A farm

It was from Izmir Clock Tower that twelve teams started their eighth leg of the race, opening their clues in Konak Square in the order they arrived at the Pit Stop in the previous leg. To kick this stretch of the race off, teams had to make their way to a marked car and, using the navigator app on a provided phone, punch in coordinates that would take them to Manisa Province, east of Izmir. Driving themselves they would find Kimiz Farm in the village of Nazarköy at the end of their directions, and there they would need to fight a Turkish oil wrestler (together), pushing him out of the ring in under three minutes to get a new clue.
