Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two groups of ten racers were split into two groups to start the race. Group A started the race in what Australian city?

Answer: Melbourne

With international travel back on the table, teams headed to the start line in anticipation of a high-stakes race around the world, but only ten made their way to the first of two starting lines to be seen off by Beau in Melbourne, Australia. Arriving to kick off their race at Flemington Racecourse, the home of the Melbourne Cup, these ten teams were informed that they would compete for $250,000 cash and two brand new Isuzu vehicles.

But first they could, on Beau's signal, run to their bags waiting at the end of the race course and open their first clues.

Then, they could hop into a cab, head to the airport, and head out into the world.
2. Group A spent their first leg in and around what Moroccan city?

Answer: Ouarzazate

Opening their first clues, teams were told to fly to the city of Ouarzazate, Morocco, the Gateway to the Sahara Desert. Grabbing a car with a private driver, teams had to take a ride to their first destination, Kasbah Tifoultoute, a fortress built hundreds of years ago, to find their first clue waiting outside.

Inside would be their first challenge, and for this one, they needed to take a spoonful of spices and, by taste alone, identify what they were presented-- pepper, cumin, turmeric, ginger, and paprika. If they could get all five, they could get their next clue.
3. Which Detour task, encountered by Group A, was completed by all teams when they arrived in Morocco?

Answer: 'Off the Line'

Leaving the spice challenge, teams opened their very first Detour, heading out to choose one of two tasks presented to them, both taking them to Ouarzazate's Old Town. None of the teams ended up taking 'In a Line' which required them to travel to a market date vendor and, after identifying five different ones, order them from cheapest to most expensive.

Instead, everyone took 'Off the Line' and partook in laundry day. Taking a basket of laundry, teams needed to sort clothing by Arabic nametags and fold them into their respective piles.
4. The first Road Block of the race, encountered by Group A, involved following in the steps of actors in what movie filmed in Morocco?

Answer: The Mummy

It was off to the famous Atlas Studios for teams' Road Blocks in this leg, and for this task, one team member needed to be in a starring role. Becoming a stuntman, the chosen teammate had to be transformed into a mummy before carrying a torch, barefoot, across hot coals, carrying a spear across a narrow balance beam, launching through three rings of fire, and bursting through a brick wall. Completing the stunt course in forty-five seconds allowed them to grab the next clue. Flick, Cynthia, Tammy, Georgia, Pako, Rachel, Claire, Jake, Fliss, and Chelsea were selected to complete this challenge.
5. Which team was the first to be eliminated from Group A, arriving at their first Pit Stop in last place?

Answer: Paul and Rachel

After their Road Block, teams had one more stop to make taking them to the sixteen stone Sphinxes on the Atlas Studio grounds to solve a logic puzzle. If they could identify which Sphinx was king and present the correct answer, they could get their next clue and head by taxi to the Pit Stop in the riverbed next to the fort village of Ksar Aït Benhaddou.

After working with other teams to complete the Sphinx challenge, it was Kelly and Georgia who checked into the Pit Stop in first place, winning themselves a luxury trip to the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.

In the end, Paul and Rachel elected to pull out of the Road Block and the thirty minute time penalty that they incurred as a result was enough to keep them at the back of the pack. The father and daughter were subsequently the first team eliminated from the race.
6. The second group of racers, Group B, started their race in what Australian city?

Answer: Sydney

While ten teams of racers headed from Melbourne to Morocco in the first episode of the season, they didn't know that a completely different set of ten racers was also headed elsewhere, completing a leg of the race in parallel. As such, ten teams met Beau at a rainy second start line at the Hickson Road Reserve in Sydney, Australia.

After revealing the prizes, the teams were given the go and raced to their bags to open their first clues-- they were off to Morocco.
7. Group B headed to Morocco as well, but what was their destination city in their first leg?

Answer: Marrakesh

Landing in Marrakech in the evening, teams were told to hop into cabs and make their way to the medieval Koutoubia Mosque. Once there, they could collect their first clue and participate in their first Active Route Info (in the rain). For this challenge, teams had to collect forty pieces of local pottery and, following a marked path through the nearby marketplace, steer a cart to a marked pottery shop to get their next clue.
8. Group B, not unlike Group A, completed their first Detour task in their first leg in Morocco and, interestingly, all teams chose the same option.

Answer: True

Once teams finished their deliveries they could push themselves into their first Detour task of the race, a choice between 'Dash' and 'Splash'. None of the teams opted to complete 'Dash', a task requiring that the find Lantern Alley in Jemaa el-Fnaa. Once there, they needed to find four lanterns flashing morse code and, using a reference card, translate the message (the word 'ENLIGHTENING') to get their next clue. Instead, everyone went for 'Splash', taking them to Souk Kharrazine El bali to find six water sellers wearing red and yellow tassels. They then needed to count the amount of brass cups on all of them, add the total (71), and trade that number to get their next clue.

Because Bren and Anja arrived too late to complete the Detour, they were given a clue and a time penalty to be completed the following morning.

Following the Detour, teams could open their Road Block clue, but first they needed to spend their evening at the Hotel Cecil.
9. Group B's Road Block asked 'who's best in a pickle?' What did they need to eat?

Answer: Lemons

When teams checked out of the Hotel Cecil in the order they arrived, they could head to Souk Zitoun Place to complete their first Road Block. In this task, participating racers needed to eat three preserved lemons, each of which was pickled for a different length of time-- one at six months, one at one year, and one at two years. If they could get down all three slices, they could get their next clue and keep racing.

Heath, Crystal, Sam, Lauren, Alex, Frankie, Stuart, Chace, Morgan, and Bren were selected for this challenge.
10. Which team was the first to be eliminated from Group B, checking into their first Pit Stop in last place?

Answer: Bren and Anja

After teams completed the Road Block they had one more task to complete, and for that they headed to Tannery Dar Dbagh Lakbira. There, they needed to hop into the tanning pools, dig for five hides, scrape them clean, and leave them to dry. When they finished the task to the approval of the local tanners, they could grab their things and proceed to the gardens of the Koutoubia Mosque.

What resulted was Angel and Frankie arriving at the mat in first place in front of the mosque's fountain while Bren and Anja, having arrived too late for their Detour and opting out of the tannery task altogether, landed on the mat last. They were subsequently sent home.
11. In Leg 3, all eighteen remaining teams united in the town of Chefchaouen, merging at which location?

Answer: Mosque

After both groups of teams completed their respective first legs of the race in Ouarzazate and Marrakech, they were brought, separately, to the Spanish mosque overlooking the Northern Moroccan city of Chefchaouen, where Beau informed them that their full-scale race-- now with eighteen teams-- would begin immediately. With that, all eighteen teams started Leg 3 at the same time, regardless of the times at which they arrived at their previous Pit Stop.
12. For how long did team members need to spin their tassels, joining the Gnawa dancers in Chefchaouen in Leg 3?

Answer: 90 seconds

For their first task as a mob of eighteen, teams had to race down into the town of Chefchaouen proper and find the Plaza Uta el Hamman. Once there, they needed to join the local Gnawa dancers, donning a tasseled fez and spinning it a continuous ninety seconds (each) to get their next clue from their dance troupe. Following this, teams could make their way, Road Block in-hand, to La Botica de la Abuela Aladdin, take a number, and stay the night.

Jake and Holly, unable to complete the dancing challenge, elected to take a penalty to keep racing, following through on it the following day.
13. For their Road Block task in Chefchaouen in Leg 3, team members had to work with which of these local items?

Answer: Soap

Teams departed in groups of three when they left La Botica de la Abuela Aladdin bound for their Road Block, and this time, teams needed to choose someone who 'needs a good scrub'. For this challenge, team members had two minutes, entering the shop, to find a stack of soaps marked with a race flag (amongst hundreds), memorize the colours in the stack, and replicate the provided combination outside the shop. If team members could not locate their stack in that allotted time, they would need to go to the back of the line to wait for another two minutes. Claire, Angel, Kathy, Tiffany, Reem, Gabby, Lilli, Mori, Sam, Jamus, Kelly, Vincent, Tottie, Stu, Steph, Glennon, Toni, and Holly were selected for this task.
14. In Chefchaouen in Leg 3, teams needed to paint the town's stairs what colour?

Answer: Blue

If teams could get out of the soap Road Block, they would be able to proceed deeper on foot into Chefchaouen, heading up to the stairs of the village and locating a paint station waiting for them. Using a tiny paintbrush for each team member, they subsequently needed to paint one entire step to the approval of a local.

When the paint job was completed, teams needed to make their way along to Place El Haouta where they would be given a book containing a series of photos of doors, all of which could be found in the town's narrow and winding streets. They needed to locate three amongst those given to them, identify their street numbers, and return with the correct ones to get their final clue of the leg.
15. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 3 in Chefchaouen, Morocco?

Answer: Jake and Holly

As soon as teams completed their scavenger hunt through the rabbit warren streets of Chefchaouen they were given one last clue sending them to their second Pit Stop, the mat of which they would find at the Restaurant Triana in the foothills beneath the village.

Jake and Holly managed to be the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop, however since they did not complete the dancing challenge, they were issued a thirty minute penalty. As such, Flick and Gabby became the winners of this leg of the race (and a $5,000 Samsung Galaxy prize package), checking in first only five minutes after Jake and Holly. The couple were, unfortunately, eliminated when the seventeenth and final team checked in with only a couple of minutes to spare on the clock.
