The clerk was watching a news program with a vampire on it being interviewed. The couple was informed by the store clerk that New Orleans was a mecca for vampires.

Adele Hale Stackhouse raised Sookie and Jason after the death of their parents. They always believed their parents had died in a flood, but in season five found out they'd been killed by a vampire. It was their cousin Hadley that delivered this disturbing news. Lois Smith played Adele in season one, and in later seasons in flashback or spirit form. You may remember seeing her in such films as "Fried Green Tomatoes" (1991), "Twister" (1996), and "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" (2012). In the novels, it was a fairy that killed their parents instead of a flood. Of all the changes from books to TV, it has been the gross misrepresentation of Charlaine Harris' Fae story lines that has bothered me the most.

Sookie's best friend, Tara, joins the staff of Merlotte's, Sookie's workplace, as a bartender, while a new resident (and vampire), Bill Compton, stops in for a drink of Tru Blood. Sookie, who can read minds, can't read his though she manages to save him from local vampire hunters who plan to drain his blood to sell as drugs (specifically the potent 'V'). Sookie's grandmother would love to meet Bill while Sam Merlotte and Tara express their disinterest in socializing with a vampire. Sookie says she can look after herself, but upon leaving the bar she's attacked by the vampire hunters. Luckily, Bill comes to her rescue, offering his own blood to regenerate her and save her life.

Being the good house guest he his, Malcolm offers Bill a taste of Jerry. Luckily for Bill, Sookie picks up the thoughts of Jerry who is pleased to be infecting another vampire with 'Hep D'. Once the vampire trio learn this, Jerry's future prospects look poor. Bill explains that Hepatitis D is the only blood-borne pathogen to which vampires are susceptible, it is apparently a mutation which is harmless to humans. Hepatitis D will not kill a vampire, though it will make them weak and hence vulnerable for around a month. In the books, this disease is called Sino-Aids.

It is Bill's turn to rescue Sookie from the Rattrays, unfortunately Sookie had already taken a bad battering by the time he arrived. Sookie fades in and out of consciousness as Bill carries her to safety, and Bill recognises that she is close to death. He hastily bites his own wrist to open a vein and pleads with Sookie to drink before his wound closes over. Understandably, Sookie is somewhat reluctant to partake of this unusual treatment, but Bill persists and Sookie very quickly begins to heal from her injuries. She will later realise that Bill's blood carries other side-effects.

"Cold Ground" begins where episode 5, "Sparks Fly Out", left off; with Sookie returning home to find the body of Adele in her blood covered kitchen. Bill arrives just after Sookie finds the body and Sam follows soon after - making both of them initial suspects for the murder. The incident does not help the already strained relationship between Bill and Sam. Detective Andy, of course, is always ready to suspect Jason, and questions him about his whereabouts soon after Jason learns of Adele's death. This does nothing to improve Jason's already frayed temper.

At the end of season one, the trio found a dead foot sticking out of Andy's car. His car was parked a little ways from the front of Merlotte's. When he opened the door, a black foot with painted toenails came out! The foot belonged to the fake exorcist Miss Jeanette. In the book "Living Dead in Dallas", the foot belonged to Lafayette. Thankfully, the power of Alan Ball and the performance of Nelsan Ellis saved the life of a great character like Lafayette.

Bill had hidden himself literally underground sometime after retrieving Malcolm and company from Merlotte's, but before the fire had been set at their new home. Sookie went to visit Bill's Civil War era grave site, and suddenly he crawled out of the ground. The couple celebrated his awakening instantly and enthusiastically. Terry Bellefluer had seen Sam running nude from the general direction of Malcolm's house, but Sam had to convince Terry he'd hallucinated the entire scene. Later though, when question by Andy Bellefluer, Sam admitted it was him. He said he was honoring his dead parents and their naturist lifestyle. A naturist is basically a nudist. I think it's safe to say that by now we all know the reason Sam was nude was because he is a shifter. Alan Ball and company painted the murder suspicions toward Sam, even more so than Charlaine Harris did in the book "Dead Until Dark".

Sookie sensed his presence immediately and their connection was solidified when she saved him from Matt and Denise Rattray. They were vampire drainers, and attacked Bill outside of the bar. Sookie kicked a little butt and saved Bill. Her best friend Tara worked briefly at a Wal-Mart like store, but quit when she was forced to listen to a woman complain. Sookie's boss and bar owner Sam Merlotte was united with Tara in mutual worry over Sookie and Bill's obvious attraction to one another. Sam was also in love with Sookie, which she discovered when she accidentally read his mind. Oh, did I mention she can read minds? Anna Paquin plays Sookie Stackhouse and Stephen Moyer plays Bill Compton. Alan Ball of "Six Feet Under" acclaim adapted the Southern Vampire series for HBO.

Jessica can't resist and she goes into the house, leading to a confrontation. Fortunately, Bill is able to save her family from getting killed though it's clear he's angry with Sookie for defying his wishes. When they argue on the drive home, Sookie is attacked by an unknown creature. Lafayette attempts to make his escape from the basement of Fangtasia but gets stopped at the bar by Ginger who shoots him in the leg. Ultimately, he's thrown back into the basement after being bitten (for food) by the vampires. Jason, meanwhile, makes a good showing at the Fellowship of the Sun retreat but he intimidates others.

Jason, meanwhile, starts sleeping with Dawn, one of the waitresses at Sam's. Stopping at Bill's the next night, Sookie finds that he has company-- several vampires are in for a visit and attempting to return him to their coven. They attempt to Glamour her but it's clear she can't be glamoured; Bill tried that earlier. Sookie suggests that she and Bill shouldn't be together since it's too dangerous but he insists that they're perfect for one another.

It becomes apparent that the three aren't interested in towing the vampire party line, telling Bill that not everyone wants to play human and live off synthetic blood. As Malcolm states, "if we can't kill people what's the point of being a vampire?". Malcolm also reveals that they left the Hepatitis D infected Jerry's body by the road - well most of it anyway.

Yep, poor Lafayette was being held prisoner under Fangtasia. Which, was a little more fortunate that what happened in the books. He was later released upon Sookie's instance, but was deeply ill from an infected bullet wound. Eric came to Lafayette later to heal him and make a deal. He needed Lafayette to sell V again, but we did not learn until the end of the season whose idea it actually was.

Sookie, after "hearing" the Rattray's intentions toward Bill, rushes into the carpark to save him. Once she arrives on the scene she finds Bill on the ground unable to move as a thin silver chain has been draped over his neck and wrists. After rescuing Bill, Sookie drapes this chain around her own neck as protection from Bill biting her - only to discover that there are other places that vampires like to bite humans!
