Doctor Who - Series 10 Trivia Questions

1. The First and Twelfth Doctors were both refusing to regenerate in the same place. Where were they?

From Quiz
Twice Upon a Time

Answer: Antarctica

For the First Doctor, 'Twice Upon a Time' took place as the 1966 serial 'The Tenth Planet' was coming to a close. Time was frozen for the other characters, though Ben and Polly (the first Doctor's companions) did make a short appearance. As 'Twice Upon a Time' was recorded over 50 years after 'The Tenth Planet', Ben, Polly, and the First Doctor were not played by their original actors. The production team did a great job of finding actors who looked just like them - especially David Bradley as the First Doctor.

2. Bill first met the Doctor when she was working in a canteen in 'The Pilot'. Which establishment did she work in?

From Quiz Where's Bill?

Answer: A university

Bill worked in a canteen at St Luke's university, a fictional place in real-world Bristol. In her spare time, she attended the Doctor's lectures. He noticed her and offered to tutor her, even though she wasn't actually a student. Martha was a medical student working in a hospital in series three. Rose was working in a department store when she first met the Doctor in series one, and she also worked undercover in the kitchen of a school for an episode of series two. Clara worked in a school, as well. She was an English teacher at Coal Hill.

3. Who plays the First Doctor in "Twice Upon A Time"?

From Quiz Twice Upon a Time

Answer: David Bradley

David Bradley comes back to the role of the First Doctor, in a way, as he played actor William Hartnell in the 2013 television film "An Adventure in Space and Time" which documented the creation of "Doctor Who." Bradley started acting in 1971, and has been a regular on British television since the 1980s. Bradley is known to Harry Potter fans as Argus Filch. Other recent Science Fiction fantasy appearances include "The Strain" (2014-17) and "Game of Thrones" (2013-17). Ironically, Bradley is almost 20 years older than Hartnell was in the 1960s, so Peter Capaldi was technically correct when he said "I am younger!" Richard Hurndall (1910-1984) played the First Doctor in the 20th anniversary special "The Five Doctors". It was one of his last roles. William Hartnell (1908-1975) created the role of "The Doctor" when the series began in 1963. He appeared in 137 episodes between November 1963 and October 1966. Hartnell can be seen briefly in clips from "The Tenth Planet" shown in "Twice Upon A Time", which was as noted, 709 episodes previous. Peter Cushing did play "Doctor Who" in two feature films in the 1960s. Cushing was a veteran of British horror and science fiction, including "Star Wars" (1977).

4. Most of "World Enough and Time" is set aboard a huge spaceship. According to Nardole, how long is it?

From Quiz World Enough and Time

Answer: 400 miles

The ship is 400 miles long. When the Doctor, Bill and Nardole arrive, the ship is in the process of falling into a black hole. Somehow, it manages to reverse its fall, but the shift alters the nature of time in the ship. Time at the bottom of the ship is moving at a much faster rate than time at the top.

5. What was the name of the probe that NASA sent to Mars at the start of "Empress of Mars"?

From Quiz Empress of Mars

Answer: Valkyrie

The probe was called Valkyrie, and it was exploring the polar ice caps of Mars. Bill and the Doctor pop into NASA unannounced (is the Doctor ever announced?) . They are just in time to discover a mysterious message on the surface of Mars. Viking 1 and 2 were the first probes that NASA successfully landed on Mars in the 1970s. Curiosity was a NASA probe that landed on Mars in 2012. Bowie Base One was the first human colony on Mars, according to "Waters of Mars" (2009).

6. What subliminal word is seen throughout "The Lie of the Land"?

From Quiz Lie of the Land

Answer: Truth

The word "Truth" along with a stylized logo of a monk is flashed repeatedly during the episode, especially when Bill is remembering things. Bill has seemingly created a new timeline by asking the monks to save the Doctor, a timeline in which the Monks have been involved in Earth's history since its beginning. People who challenge this narrative are arrested under the "Memory Crimes Act of 1975". Given how long the monks were supposed to have been on Earth, you would have thought they would made it criminal to challenge their back story long before 1975. Anyway, people who did were sentenced to ten years in prison. If you are looking for "believe" as a motif, check out "The X-Files" or "The Matrix" series. "Obey" is used subliminally in the science fiction classic "They Live" (1988).

7. Once again, a very important person interrupts Bill's date with Penny. Who was it this time?

From Quiz The Pyramid at the End of the World

Answer: Secretary General of the United Nations

The Secretary General of the UN showed up with several UN peace keepers. He was Asian, which the previous Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon of South Korea, was. The current UN Secretary General is Antonio Gutteres, former Prime Minister of Portugal. Togo Igawa played the Secretary General. He is the first Japanese actor to become a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Igawa became an actor fairly late in life, starting in British television when he was 40. Igawa has played a monk on several occasions. He has also done a great deal of voice-over work, especially in the "Thomas the Tank Engine" series. Bill probably would not have paid much attention if President Trump had shown up, because as she notes "He's orange." No mention of the WTO or Australia in the episode.

8. What very important person comes to visit the Doctor at the university?

From Quiz Extremis

Answer: The Pope

The Pope arrives and requests the Doctor visit the Vatican Secret Archives to examine a strange document. How strange? Everyone who reads it commits suicide. The Vatican sought out the Doctor because he had been recommended by Pope Benedict IX in the year 1045. Benedict IX was the only person to serve multiple terms as Pope. He served from 1032 to 1044, briefly in 1045, and 1047-1048. Benedict IX was one of the most scandalous Popes in history, and was widely reputed to be a homosexual. It is implied the Doctor had a relationship with the Pope. While the Pope has shown up in "Doctor Who" prose, this marks the first time the Pope has appeared on television. The Doctor has encountered presidents over the years, most notably Richard Nixon in "The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon" (2011). He has also encountered a variety of British Prime Ministers, including Winston Churchill and Harriet Jones.

9. What was the name of the space station where most of "Oxygen" took place?

From Quiz Oxygen

Answer: Chasm Forge

Chasm Forge was the name of the space station. It was a mining station for copper. In the future, oxygen becomes a valuable commodity (actually it probably is now). The corporation that runs Chasm Forge charges the workers for using oxygen, leading to the space zombie disaster. Platform One was where the Ninth Doctor and Rose watched the Earth explode in "The End of the World" (2005). The Crucible was the base for Davros and the Daleks in "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End" (2008). Valley Forge was the base for the Continental Army during the early years of the American Revolution. The Doctor may have visited George Washington at some point, but not during this episode.

10. What veteran British actor played the mysterious landlord in "Knock, Knock"?

From Quiz Knock Knock

Answer: David Suchet

David Suchet has been acting since 1970. He is probably best known as Agatha Christie's detective Hercule Poirot, playing him in 70 episodes of the ITV series "Poirot" from 1989 to 2013. Over the course of his career, Suchet has done a great deal of Shakespeare and historical drama work as well. Tim Curry is probably best known as Doctor Frankenfurter from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Tim Piggott-Smith appeared on "Doctor Who" twice: in "The Claws of Axos" (1971) and "The Masque of Mandragora" (1976). Pigott-Smith died on April 7, 2017. Timothy Dalton was James Bond in the 1980s and played Lord President Rassilon in "The End of Time, Parts 1 and 2" (2009-2010). All four actors were born in 1946.

11. Where were the Doctor and Bill during most of "Thin Ice"?

From Quiz Thin Ice

Answer: London 1814

"Thin Ice" takes place during the Frost Fair of 1814, on February 4 to be precise. The Doctor and Bill arrive to discover that a mysterious creature under the ice of the Thames is eating people. They interact with a variety of colorful Regency Era characters, including street urchins. The Doctor mentions that he had been to the Frost Fair several times before. 12. What is the name of the Doctor's new companion in "The Pilot"?

From Quiz The Pilot

Answer: Bill

Mackie's addition to the cast was announced in April 2016. Bill is the first openly gay companion in the history of the series. Melanie Bush (Mel) was a companion of the sixth and seventh Doctors, and was played by Bonnie Langford.

13. The Doctors were discussing regeneration. Who appeared and asked for a Doctor?

From Quiz Twice Upon a Time

Answer: A WWI captain

A British WWI captain was in a ditch on a battlefield at Ypres. Opposite him, also holding a gun, was a German soldier. The captain was preparing to pull the trigger in self-defense when time froze for everyone except himself. He was transported to the South Pole in the wrong decade and appeared at the point where the two Doctors were arguing.

14. In 'Smile', the Doctor offered to take Bill on an adventure. Where did Bill want to go?

From Quiz Where's Bill?

Answer: She wanted to go into the future.

The Doctor took Bill to one of the first planets colonised by humans from Earth. When they arrived, the planet was deserted. There were buildings and robots, but the start-up crew appeared to have vanished. The Doctor later found them on the compost heap...

15. Where does the Twelfth Doctor meet the First Doctor in "Twice Upon a Time"?

From Quiz Twice Upon a Time

Answer: The South Pole

They meet at the South Pole, which was the setting for most of "The Tenth Planet" the story in which William Hartnell regenerated. The Tenth Planet referred to Mondas, the home world of the Cybermen. The Cyberman played an important role in "The Doctor Falls" and are the ultimate reason for the Twelfth Doctor's need to regenerate. Trenzalore was the site where the Eleventh Doctor became the Twelfth Doctor in "The Time of the Doctor" (2013). Gallifrey is the home world of the Time Lords.

16. What is the Doctor eating on board the TARDIS in "World Enough and Time"?

From Quiz World Enough and Time

Answer: crisps (potato chips)

The Doctor is eating a bag of crisps - potato chips for non-Brits. There is a lot of food in this episode - Steve Moffat must have been hungry when he was writing. Bill and the Doctor eat chips in one scene, Bill eats a bacon sandwich and Nardole has a Jaffa cake. The Doctor eats sushi in "The Return of Dr Mysterio" (2016). Jelly babies have shown up frequently throughout the history of "Doctor Who", particularly with the Fourth Doctor. They are a gummy candy in the shape of babies. While Missy mentions beans and toast, there did not seem to be any on hand. Beans and toast, a very common British breakfast food, has also been mentioned frequently on the show. Crosse and Blackwell actually marketed "Doctor Who" baked beans during the Tom Baker era.

17. What was the mysterious message on the surface of Mars?

From Quiz Empress of Mars

Answer: God Save the Queen

"God Save the Queen" was left by a group of British soldiers who had traveled to Mars. While they probably meant the sentiment, the song has been the British national anthem since the middle of the 18th century. "Hello Sweetie" is River Song's catchphrase. She has used it several times to get the Doctor's attention. "Geronimo" was the catchphrase of the Eleventh Doctor. "Allons-Y" was the catchphrase of the Tenth Doctor.

18. According to Bill, how much time had passed since the events in "The Pyramid at the End of the World"?

From Quiz Lie of the Land

Answer: six months

Bill says that six months had passed since she saved the Doctor. Nardole said that he had spent six weeks recovering from exposure to the virus, and the rest of the time searching for the Doctor. Bill has used the alternate reality to create a living version of her late mother, that she talks with over tea.

19. What was the name of the fictional country where the pyramid suddenly appeared?

From Quiz The Pyramid at the End of the World

Answer: Turmezistan

Turmezistan is vaguely similar to Turkmenistan, an actual country in Central Asia. Given the description by the Secretary General, Turmezistan is somewhere in Central Asia, and is a place of strategic importance to both China and Russia. Turmezistan made its first appearance in "Doctor Who" during "The Zygon Invasion" (2015). Durka-Durkastan was a fictional country in "Team America: World Police" (2004). Parmistan was the setting for the Kurt Thomas martial arts film "Gymkata" (1985). Tazbekistan is where the BBC2 comedy series "Ambassadors" (2013) was set.

20. What was the name of Bill's date in "Extremis"?

From Quiz Extremis

Answer: Penny

Bill was on what appeared to be a first date with an attractive young woman named Penny. Towards the end of episode, Bill claims that Penny is "out of her league". The Doctor tells Bill to ask Penny out anyways, because life is dangerous. Moira was Bill's roommate. Jenny was the Tenth Doctor's daughter in "The Doctor's Daughter" (2008). Felicity was one of Bill's housemates in "Knock Knock" (2017).

21. According to the computer, how many crew members were still alive when the Doctor and company arrived?

From Quiz Oxygen

Answer: four

The Chasm Forge had a crew of 40 and 36 reported deaths; therefore, four survivors. They were Chief Tasker, Ivan, Abby and a blue alien named Dahh-ren. Ivan was played by Kieran Bew. He has been working in British television since 2002, and played the title role in "Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands" (2016). He is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Mimi Ndiweni played Abby. She was in "The Legend of Tarzan" (2016) and the mini-series "Mister Selfridge" (2016). Dahh-ren was played by Peter Caulfield, who has done a great deal of work in West End theater, but only recently been working in television. He has appeared in the British series "Banana" (2015) and "Cucumber" (2015) and the Swedish drama series "Modus" (2017).

22. Who was the first of the roommates to disappear?

From Quiz Knock Knock

Answer: Pavel

Pavel disappears almost at the start of "Knock Knock". He plays a record, which activates the evil bugs inside the house. There is a scream and ... cut to the credits. Pavel was played by Bart Suavek. He has previously worked in the police procedural "New Blood" (2016) and the police comedy "No Offence" (2017).

23. What is the name of the imaginary friend that the Doctor teases Bill about?

From Quiz Thin Ice

Answer: Pete

Pete comes about when Bill mentions "the butterfly effect". It is a scientific theory which is part of chaos theory that suggests that very small changes can have effects on very large systems - ie, the flap of the wings of a butterfly can affect the path of a tornado. Ray Bradbury helped to popularize the butterfly effect in science fiction with his 1952 story "A Sound of Thunder". It also plays a role in "Jurassic Park" (1993) and of course, the 2004 film starring Ashton Kutcher (which actually gets the theory wrong). Ben (Michael Craze) was a companion of the First and Second Doctors. Jamie (Frazier Hines) was a companion of the Second Doctor. Steven Taylor (Peter Purves) was a companion of the First Doctor.

24. What food is featured prominently at the start of "The Pilot"?

From Quiz The Pilot

Answer: french fries (chips)

French fries are shown repeatedly during the Doctor's lecture. Bill is working as a lunch lady, serving up fries, during this sequence. In her first conversation with the Doctor, Bill tells about giving a girl she liked extra fries -- who then proceeded to become fat.

25. The Doctor took Bill to the last frost fair on the River Thames in 1814. There were merchants, performers, and even an elephant. Which city did they go to in 'Thin Ice'?

From Quiz Where's Bill?

Answer: London

February 1st 1814 saw the beginning of the final frost fair on the River Thames in London. Stalls were set up on the frozen river. They sold gingerbread, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, gin, and souvenirs. There was dancing, sledging, and bowling. The party lasted four days before the ice began to thaw. After 1814, winters in London became milder. An old bridge that obstructed the flow of the river was demolished, and the Embankment was constructed, making the Thames flow faster. All of these factors meant that the Thames never froze for as long or as completely as it did in 1814. That was the last frost fair in London.

26. Where was The Captain when he was taken out of time?

From Quiz Twice Upon a Time

Answer: Ypres 1914

The Captain was in Ypres, Belgium on December 24, 1914. This would prove significant as it was the time of the Christmas Armistice, an unofficial cessation of hostilities between allied and German forces. Soldiers began by singing Christmas carols and would later exchange souvenirs and even play soccer. The Marne and The Somme were two of the bloodiest battles in human history. Gallipoli was the site of the suicidal charge by Australian-New Zealand forces.

27. Where is Bill shot?

From Quiz World Enough and Time

Answer: chest

Bill has a rather enormous hole in the center of her chest when she is shot by the blue alien. Fortunately (or not?), the ship has a hospital facility that is able to repair her. Unfortunately, those repairs are the first steps towards turning Bill into something very different. She was on Floor 1056 of the spaceship.

28. What year did most of the action take place in during "Empress of Mars"?

From Quiz Empress of Mars

Answer: 1881

Most of the episode takes place in 1881, with a group of British soldiers who had traveled to Mars in search of treasure - and to expand the Empire, of course. The Eleventh Doctor encountered the Skladak aboard a Soviet nuclear submarine in 1983. ("Cold War", 2013) The year 3885 was the setting for "The Curse of Peladon" (1972), where the Third Doctor actually worked with Ice Warriors. The original "Ice Warriors" episode was set sometime in the 50th century, probably around 4935.

29. Where do Bill and Nardole travel to in order to find the ship where the Doctor is broadcasting from?

From Quiz Lie of the Land

Answer: Scotland

The Doctor is broadcasting from a ship in the North Sea, so they head up to Scotland. They are able to get passage on a supply ship whose captain hates the monks, and is willing to take them to the Doctor. Once they arrive at the ship, the Doctor surrounds Bill with armed guards and claims that he has aligned himself with the monks. Bill claims that the Doctor has turned his back on everything he believes in - by the end of the argument, Bill shoots the Doctor.

30. How many minutes were left on the doomsday clock when the monks sent their first message to cell phones?

From Quiz The Pyramid at the End of the World

Answer: 3 & three

The Doomsday Clock was established by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists in 1947. As the Doctor explained, it measures how close the world is to destruction. The monks were using it as a warning, an indication that the world soon faced a catastrophic event that they alone were capable of preventing.
