Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What subliminal word is seen throughout "The Lie of the Land"?

Answer: Truth

The word "Truth" along with a stylized logo of a monk is flashed repeatedly during the episode, especially when Bill is remembering things. Bill has seemingly created a new timeline by asking the monks to save the Doctor, a timeline in which the Monks have been involved in Earth's history since its beginning.

People who challenge this narrative are arrested under the "Memory Crimes Act of 1975". Given how long the monks were supposed to have been on Earth, you would have thought they would made it criminal to challenge their back story long before 1975. Anyway, people who did were sentenced to ten years in prison.

If you are looking for "believe" as a motif, check out "The X-Files" or "The Matrix" series. "Obey" is used subliminally in the science fiction classic "They Live" (1988).
2. According to Bill, how much time had passed since the events in "The Pyramid at the End of the World"?

Answer: six months

Bill says that six months had passed since she saved the Doctor. Nardole said that he had spent six weeks recovering from exposure to the virus, and the rest of the time searching for the Doctor.

Bill has used the alternate reality to create a living version of her late mother, that she talks with over tea.
3. Where do Bill and Nardole travel to in order to find the ship where the Doctor is broadcasting from?

Answer: Scotland

The Doctor is broadcasting from a ship in the North Sea, so they head up to Scotland. They are able to get passage on a supply ship whose captain hates the monks, and is willing to take them to the Doctor.

Once they arrive at the ship, the Doctor surrounds Bill with armed guards and claims that he has aligned himself with the monks. Bill claims that the Doctor has turned his back on everything he believes in - by the end of the argument, Bill shoots the Doctor.
4. What is not one the things Missy requests in exchange for helping the Doctor?

Answer: pizza

The particle accelerator, 3-D printer and even the pony were all real asks, but apparently Missy wasn't hungry. Missy says that she had defeated the Monks in the past, and explains that the easiest way to beat them is to kill the person who established the psychic connection with the monks, namely Bill.

Towards the end of the episode, Missy actually seems remorseful. Quite an unusual mood to be seen in the Master.

This is Michelle Gomez's 11th appearance on "Doctor Who" as Missy. Michelle Gomez has been acting since the early 1990s, with a long career in British television, including "The Book Group" (2002), "The Green Wing" (2004-06) and "Psychobitches" (2014).
5. Missy plays the opening notes of what song on the piano when Bill and the Doctor are talking with her?

Answer: The Entertainer

It was "The Entertainer", written by Scott Joplin in 1902. "The Entertainer" has been used in many films and television shows, probably most notably in the 1973 Best Picture "The Sting". Joplin also wrote the "Maple Leaf Rag" (1899). James Scott wrote "Broadway Rag" in 1922.

Missy did play "Fur Elise" earlier, at the end of "Knock Knock" (2017). "Bagatelle Number 25" (WoO 59) was written by Ludwig von Beethoven in 1810.
6. Who neutralizes the soldier that is trying to stop the Doctor inside the pyramid?

Answer: Nardole

It is was Nardole, proving once again that he is a genuine bad ass. Nardole used his Tarovian martial arts skills, specifically a Tarovian neck pinch (very similar to the one used by Mister Spock on "Star Trek"). Nardole claims that he achieved the rank of Brown Tabard.
7. Right before the Doctor enters the monk's mind, what aspects of human civilization does he suggest eliminating?

Answer: Racism and people who talk in theaters

The Doctor mentions racism and people who talk in movie theaters in passing. He attempts to take over the transmission that is feeding false history to the Earth, but the monks prove to be too powerful. In the end, Bill has to save the Earth.

For the record, the Doctor has fought slavery and sexism on many occasions, and only believes in genocide for Daleks. He is also on record against banter,
8. Bill managed to save the world from the monks with images of what?

Answer: Her mother

Bill focused on her mother, a powerful image of unconditional love. It proved to be too powerful for the monks, and broke their psychic hold over the human race. Once the link was broken, the monks took off in their pyramid spaceship, along with all of their statues.

At the end of the episode, Bill and the Doctor discovered that many people had no memory of the monks. Hardly surprising, as people also forgot the world being covered in trees and giant solar flares earlier ("In the Forest of the Night" (2014)). " It's a human superpower, forgetting." notes the Doctor.

Rosie Jane played Bill's mother. Her only television credits are on "Doctor Who". She played a Time Lord in the 2013 episode "The Day of the Doctor".
9. The Doctor regenerates into a new person when Bill shoots him.

Answer: False

The Doctor makes a great show of it, with hocus-pocus glowing lights, but in the end, Bill didn't really shoot him because the gun had blanks. The whole scene with the Doctor claiming to have joined in with the monks was a test for Bill designed by Nardole and the Doctor - she passed of course.

The false regeneration was a preview of coming attractions, as Peter Capaldi announced in January 2017 that series ten would be his last.
10. Who wrote the series ten episode "Lie of the Land"?

Answer: Toby Whithouse

Toby Whithouse wrote "Lie of the Land". This is his seventh episode of "Doctor Who". Others include "School Reunion" (2006), "The Vampires of Venice" (2010) and "Under the Lake/Before the Flood" (2015). Whithouse also created the series "Being Human" (2008-2013).

Steven Moffat wrote two of the three scripts in "The Monks Trilogy". Moffat has been show runner on "Doctor Who" since 2010. He announced he will be leaving the show at the end of 2017, and that Chris Chibnall will take over.

Wayne Yip directed "Lie of the Land". Yip has been working in television since 2010. He directed two episodes of the "Doctor Who" spinoff "Class" in 2016. Along with "The Lie of the Land", Yip also directed "Empress of Mars" (2017). Yip worked with former companion Billie Piper on "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" in 2011.

Jamie Hill was the guy behind all the creepy makeup as the monks during "The Monks Trilogy". He was also the Mummy in "Mummy on the Orient Express" (2014).
