Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the space station where most of "Oxygen" took place?

Answer: Chasm Forge

Chasm Forge was the name of the space station. It was a mining station for copper. In the future, oxygen becomes a valuable commodity (actually it probably is now). The corporation that runs Chasm Forge charges the workers for using oxygen, leading to the space zombie disaster.

Platform One was where the Ninth Doctor and Rose watched the Earth explode in "The End of the World" (2005). The Crucible was the base for Davros and the Daleks in "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End" (2008). Valley Forge was the base for the Continental Army during the early years of the American Revolution. The Doctor may have visited George Washington at some point, but not during this episode.
2. According to the computer, how many crew members were still alive when the Doctor and company arrived?

Answer: four

The Chasm Forge had a crew of 40 and 36 reported deaths; therefore, four survivors.
They were Chief Tasker, Ivan, Abby and a blue alien named Dahh-ren.

Ivan was played by Kieran Bew. He has been working in British television since 2002, and played the title role in "Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands" (2016). He is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Mimi Ndiweni played Abby. She was in "The Legend of Tarzan" (2016) and the mini-series "Mister Selfridge" (2016).

Dahh-ren was played by Peter Caulfield, who has done a great deal of work in West End theater, but only recently been working in television. He has appeared in the British series "Banana" (2015) and "Cucumber" (2015) and the Swedish drama series "Modus" (2017).
3. How many breaths did the Doctor, Bill, and Nardole have when they got their smart suits?

Answer: 2500

2500 breaths. The suits measured breaths instead of minutes, because your respiration rate alters depending on your mood and level of activity. Towards the end of the episode, Bill said she had 700 breaths left.
4. What was Bill's smart suit named?

Answer: Velma

Nardole claimed that the voice of the computer on the ship was based on an actress he had once known named Velma. Bill's smart suit seemed to like the name, and called itself Velma. The suits were programmed to kill the people inside them, because the space station had become unprofitable, and the oxygen needed to keep the workers alive was expensive.

Velma and Daphne were part of the Scooby gang on "Scooby Doo". Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart are the female leads in "Chicago" (2002). Velma Valento is from "Farewell, My Lovely" (1940) by Raymond Chandler.
5. What was the name of the Drill Chief on the space station?

Answer: Tasker

Tasker didn't have that big a part in "Oxygen". He was attacked by the space zombies only a few minutes after meeting the Doctor, leaving three survivors.

Chief Tasker was played by Justin Salinger. He was been working in British television since 2000. Salinger had a major role in "The Mill", a 2014 drama about Victorian era mill workers.

Robson was the person in charge of drilling in the Second Doctor era adventure "Fury from the Deep" (1968). Oxygen actually plays an important role in that story. Tony Mack was in charge of the drill in "The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood" (2010). Rasmussen was the creepy space station manager on Le Verrier station in "Sleep No More" (2014).
6. What did the Doctor lose when he rescued Bill?

Answer: His sight

The Doctor managed to save Bill by giving her his helmet, but prolonged expose to the vacuum of space left the Doctor blind. While there have been other blind characters over the course of "Doctor Who" this marks the first time the Doctor is blind.
7. Where did the Doctor send Nardole on an errand?

Answer: Birmingham

The Doctor sent Nardole to Birmingham to get him some crisps. An odd request, since crisps are readily available in London. Nardole saw through the Doctor's subterfuge and came back to scold him about flying off in the TARDIS.

Birmingham is the second largest cities in England, with a population of 1.1 million (2014 census). It is also one of the oldest places in England, with evidence of human civilization dating back almost 10,000 years. Crisps are available in Birmingham.
8. How does the Doctor manage to save Bill at the end of "Oxygen"?

Answer: threaten to blow up the space station

The Doctor determines that the entire space station is driven by profit. When the station become unprofitable, the company ordered the workers to be eliminated to save costs. The Doctor determined that the company would prefer to keep the remaining people alive rather than lose an extremely expensive space station - and he was correct. The space zombies stopped attacking and gave their surplus oxygen to the survivors.

Nano-bots were a major part of "Smile" this series, and have appeared in several other episodes, most notably "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" (2005). "Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow" was a catch phrase of the Third Doctor; nobody (including the Doctor) is quite sure what it means. Space zombies were little affected by the cold or lack of air in outer space, as they wandered around on the exterior of the space station.
9. Nardole is able to restore the Doctor's vision in "Oxygen".

Answer: False

The Doctor, Bill, Nardole and the survivors of the space station are aboard the TARDIS and it appears that Nardole has cured the Doctor. However, at the end of the episode, the Doctor reveals that he is still blind.
10. Who wrote the series 10 "Doctor Who" episode "Oxygen"?

Answer: Jamie Mathieseon

Jamie Mathiesen wrote "Oxygen". This was his fourth episode of "Doctor Who" after "Mummy on the Orient Express" (2014), "Flatline" (2014) and "The Girl Who Died" (2015). Mathieson is a natural for "Doctor Who" as he also wrote the science fiction comedy film "Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel" (2009).

Charles Palmer directed "Oxygen". This is his sixth "Doctor Who". Palmer did four episodes with the Tenth Doctor back in 2007. He also directed the series 10 episode "Eaters of Light" (2017). He has been working in British television since 2005.

Katie Brayben played the doomed Ellie we saw at the start of "Oxygen". She also played the ghost of Princess Diana in the recent Masterpiece Theater "King Charles III" (2017).

Hayley Nebauer is the costumer designer for "Doctor Who" during season 10. She's the one who came up the cool spacesuits. She started working on the show during "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" (2016). Hayley is a native of Australia.
