Canadian TV Trivia Questions

1. What was the Canadian title for the show that was named "Avonlea" by American broadcasters?

From Quiz
Bring Back These Canadian Shows

Answer: Road to Avonlea

The "Road to Avonlea" series was a collaborative effort that was developed in Canada. Two of the main producers were the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the Disney Channel. The series was based on books written by Lucy Maud Montgomery who also wrote "Anne of Green Gables" (Anne does not appear in "Road to Avonlea", but the character is mentioned in the series). It would be great to have this show back because it provided stories of a much simpler time in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

2. "Discover all the clues". A computer monitor named Theta and a typewriter named Otto hid in the headquarters of the local newspaper, The Herbertville Chronicle. But it was the evil nemesis named Duneedon who defined this mysterious show.

From Quiz Classic TVOntario Children's Programming

Answer: "Read All About It"

40 episodes were produced over the years, with each clocking in at approximately 15 minutes. Filmed in Brampton, this program lasted four seasons.

3. "BUZZ" was a popular comedy on the Comedy Network for many years. Who was inside the Hip-Hop Bunny suit?

From Quiz TV, Eh?

Answer: Jean Paul

Jean Paul was a regular guest on the show. Daryn Jones and Morgan Smith were the regular hosts. This program originated on Rogers Commnunity Television, and was "picked-up" by the Comedy Network.

4. Easiest question first: What was the name of the dishevelled, dirty toque-wearing, and generally cranky character on 'The Beachcombers'?

From Quiz Oh No! It's A Canadian Show!

Answer: Relic

Played by Robert Clothier, he was the irritating arch-rival of main character Nick, played by Bruno Gerussi.

5. What was the play-on-words title of the show that focussed on commercial awareness for young people?

From Quiz Bring Back These Canadian Shows

Answer: Street Cents

"Street Cents" aired on the CBC network from 1989-2006. The award-winning show was known for being inclusive and representative of Canada's youth. "Street Cents" included interviews with youth entrepreneurs, testing of products, the investigation of letters of complaint about products sent in by viewers, and even a segment called "Fit for the Pit" where inferior products were tossed into a fiery pit. The show aired commercial free so that sponsors would not be seen as biasing the segments that were broadcast. This show would be great to have back to help inform young people about quality and ethics in advertising, media, and popular products.

6. On what show would you find a character named "Relic"?

From Quiz Classic Canadian Television

Answer: "The Beachcombers"

The late Robert Allan Clothier portrayed Relic, a fellow beachcomber who hung around "Molly's Reach".

7. In this show, three pairs raced through a grocery store, loading items into their shopping carts and trying to beat the clock and each other in the process. What was the name of the show?

From Quiz Oh No! Canadian Game Shows!

Answer: 'Supermarket Sweep'

The breathless shoppers weren't awarded the groceries at the end of the show, however. Instead, they had to endure further humiliation by trying to guess which of sixteen scrolls of paper held the name of a 'dream vacation'. In all the shows I watched, I never once saw anybody win the 'big prize'. Usually they ended up with a consolation gift valued at far less than the amount of the groceries they'd pulled off the shelves. The depressing show was hosted by a constantly-smiling Tino Monte.

8. 'Black Harbour' was a drama series in which a restauranter named Kit, her husband and family move from L.A. back to her hometown, a small fishing community in Nova Scotia. Why did they move?

When they discovered that Kit's mother needed heart surgery they came home where they decided to stay. Kit was played by Rebecca {Jenkins;} her husband, Nick Haskell was played by Geraint Wyn Davis.

9. Don Adams, best known for his role on decent television show 'Get Smart' came north of the border when his career sagged to star in which Canadian sitcom?

From Quiz Oh No! It's A Canadian Show!

Answer: 'Check It Out'

His character was that of an unhappy supermarket manager, but his unhappiness could never match that of the viewers who were forced to watch this bomb.

10. "Street _______" was the name of what show that featured a Toronto law firm?

From Quiz Bring Back These Canadian Shows

Answer: Legal

The original run of "Street Legal" went from 1987 through 1994 on the CBC network. It held the record for the longest-running one-hour drama in the history of Canadian television until it was surpassed by another show in 2014. In 2018, the network suggested that they were considering a revival for this show, which is a good thing. It should be brought back because it focuses on Canadian laws, and Canadian court customs. These can be quite different than those in the US where many of the other legal-type tv programs that are broadcast in Canada are created.

11. "Trouble! Trouble! Trouble!". This phrase alone should remind you of Reddy Fox, Peter Rabbit and Sammy Bluejay. What is the name of this program that first aired on TVO in 1978?

This program was in fact an anglicized version of a Japanese cartoon called "Yama nezumi Rokkiy Chakku" that aired in Japan in 1973. The literal translation is "Rocky Chuck, the Mountain Rat".

12. Who are the "Puppets Who Kill"?

From Quiz TV, Eh?

14. This game show, hosted by Wayne Cox, was nothing more than 'Charades' with a few has-been sitcom actors thrown into the mix. What was it called?

From Quiz Oh No! Canadian Game Shows!

Answer: 'Acting Crazy'

The show was taped in Vancouver, and featured such 'celebrity' guests as Sally Struthers, Jennilee Harrison and Marcia Wallace. I saw one episode where the talent must have been a no-show, because fellow Canadian game show host Stu Jeffries appeared as one of the 'stars'.

15. 'Bordertown' was a show set back in the 1880's. It portrayed US Marshall, Jack Craddock and Mountie Clive Bennett trying to keep law and order along the Canada-US border. Who was lady doctor that they both carried a torch for?

From Quiz Canadian TV Shows

Answer: Dr. Marie Dumont

Marie was played by Sophie Barjac. Both Jack and Clive had feelings for the widowed doctor, but in spite of their rivalry, thay had a deep respect and admiration for each other.

16. Which show told of the exploits of a marine veterinarian, and often featured the Vancouver Aquarium?

From Quiz Bring Back These Canadian Shows

Answer: Danger Bay

"Danger Bay" is another CBC show that was produced in collaboration with the Disney Channel. Aimed at older children and adolescents, this television show told the story of a marine veterinarian and his children. The show focussed on environmental issues such as forest preservation, pollution, and wildlife management. The 123 episodes ran for about five years in the 1990s, but continued in re-runs around the world for many years after filming stopped. Given the continuing concerns about environmental issues in the 21st century, "Danger Bay" should be brought back to help educate a new generation.

17. Boot, Pretty, Granny and a scary talking house. And who could forget Mister Bones?

20. A sickeningly sweet kids show featuring a too-cute-for-words elephant mascot was hosted by Sharon, Lois, and....?

From Quiz Oh No! It's A Canadian Show!

Answer: Bram

21. Canadian actor Mike Myers appeared in which Canadian television show about a dog when he was just a child?

From Quiz Bring Back These Canadian Shows

Answer: The Littlest Hobo

"The Littlest Hobo" was produced in Canada, and it was based on a 1958 American movie of the same name. The German shepherd star of the show would appear in a different town in each episode, befriending a resident who needed the companionship or assistance. The show was first produced in syndication from 1963-1965, and was re-created for a second run from 1979-1985. Mike Myers appeared in the eighth episode of the second run that was entitled "Boy in Wheels". It would be great to have this show back because it provided innocence and warm fuzzy feelings for thirty minutes each week.

From Quiz Classic Canadian Television

Answer: "The Friendly Giant"

Bob Homme played the "Friendly Giant".. hence the "look up waaaay up" part.

23. The groovy theme song from the original 'Austin Powers' movie was undoubtedly familiar to Canadians, as it was also the tune of an old Canadian game show. Which program featured this catchy music?

From Quiz Oh No! Canadian Game Shows!

Answer: 'Definition'

The melody is actually called 'Soul Bossa Nova', and was written by Quincy Jones. Mike Myers wasn't the first Canadian to seize upon this swinging tune. Canadian band The Dream Warriors modified the music for their hit song 'My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style' in 1991.

24. 'DaVinci's Inquest' is based upon the cases of coroner Dominic Da Vinci played by Nicholas Campbell. In which city is this crime drama based?

25. In "North of 60", to what does the number refer?

From Quiz Bring Back These Canadian Shows

Answer: The 60th parallel of latitude.

The 60th parallel of latitude marks the border between Canada's western provinces and its northern territories. "North of 60" was a show that profiled a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Officer who was trying to keep order in the small northern community of Lynx River, Northwest Territories. This show originally ran from 1992-1997, but has since appeared in syndication around the world. It would be great to have this show back for a couple of reasons. First, it helped viewers to understand some things about the culture of the Indigenous people who live in Canada's north. Secondly, it showed some of the parts of the large country of Canada that many will never see except on screen.

26. This show was about an antiques shop that sells "cursed" items.

30. Which Canadian cooking show always had a pun using the word "wok" appear in the show?

From Quiz Bring Back These Canadian Shows

Answer: Wok with Yan

Steven Yan hosted this Asian cuisine show. It ran from 1980-82, then again in the early 90s. The puns were printed on the different aprons that the host wore during the show. Examples of the puns include "Wok the Heck", "You Are Wok You Eat", "Wok Goes Up Must Come Down", "Wok's New Pussycat", and "Wokkey Night in Canada". We need this show back because it was funny, but provided viewers with delicious and healthy recipes.
