Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Danger Bay
Answer: British Columbia
"Danger Bay' ran on CBC Television and The Disney Channel between 1985 and 1990. It was an environmentally friendly series aimed primarily at older children and young adults and revolved around the Roberts family, Doc Roberts a veterinarian and his two children, Jonah and Nicole. Danger Bay was an outport of Vancouver -- the children are picked for school, not by a bus, but by water ferry -- and the Aquarium in Vancouver serves as the Doc's home base and is featured in just about every episode.
2. Black Harbour
Answer: Nova Scotia
"Black Harbour" starred Canadian actors Rebecca Jenkins and Geraint Wyn Davies as Katharine Hubbard and Nick Haskell, a well-off couple who have made successful careers in Los Angeles, but return to Katherine's hometown on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia when her mother becomes ill.
The series also featured their two daughters as well as Katherine's first boy friend, who comes to work for her husband in the family's boatyard. The series ran on CBC Television from 1996 to 1999.
3. Rookie Blue
Answer: Toronto
This series ran for six seasons on Global TV in Canada and on ABC in the US. It was set and filmed in Toronto, often using real locations and street names. It tells the story of five rookie police officers over the first years of their careers, both their adventures on the job and their inter-personal relationships. Missy Peregrym, who played the main character Andrea (Andy) McNally, went on to be part of the cast of CBS' series "FBI".
4. Murdoch Mysteries
Answer: Toronto
"Murdoch Mysteries" centres around Detective William Murdoch (played by Yannick Bisson) of the Toronto Constabulary and first aired on CBC Television in January 2008. Murdoch solves his cases through his own intelligent observation and through the use of unusual technology, some of which he invents himself.
The series begins in 1895 and continues through the last years of Queen Victoria's reign and into the Edwardian era. Appearing on the show are many real characters from that time: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Andrew Carnegie, PM Wilfrid Laurier, Buffalo Bill Cody, Jack London, Helen Keller and many more.
5. Private Eyes
Answer: Toronto
"Private Eyes" is a series about two private investigators in Toronto. Matt Shade or "Shadow"(played by Jason Priestley, formerly of "Beverly Hills 90210") is a retired ice hockey player, whose reputation on the ice helps in getting people to talk to him. The show made its debut in Canada in February 2016 on Global TV.
6. Republic of Doyle
Answer: Newfoundland and Labrador
"Republic of Doyle" was a popular comedy-drama that ran on CBC Television from 2010 to 2014. The main characters were Jake Doyle and his father Malachy, both retired police officers in St John's Newfoundland, who now work together as private investigators.
Their dealings are not always on the right side of the law and the final season turned on a recurring theme of clearing Jake from a murder charge. "Republic of Doyle" and "Murdoch Mysteries" did a very intriguing pair of cross-over episodes, in which the star of "Republic of Doyle" (Allan Hawco) played his own grandfather when investigations took Detective Murdoch to St John's, and then Yannick Bisson (Murdoch) played his own grandson on "Republic of Doyle".
7. Les Boys
Answer: Québec
"Les Boys" was originally a very popular film (in French) about ice hockey, a sport that is almost a religion in the province of Québec. The original 1997 movie and its three sequels would form one of the most popular and successful Canadian film series.
In 2007 a spin-off television series made its debut on Radio-Canada (the French equivalent of the CBC) in 2007 and ran for five seasons with many of the original movie cast. The plot of the films and the TV series revolves around the various members of an amateur adult men's hockey team and their relationships and adventures on and off the ice.
8. The Listener
Answer: Toronto
"The Listener" ran on CTV from 2009 to 2014. It starred Craig Olejnik as Toby Logan, who starts the series as a paramedic. The premise of the show is that Toby can read minds, a gift he got from his mother who disappeared while he was a child -- the search to find out what happened to her is one of the running themes of the show. Gradually he ceases to be a paramedic and becomes a consultant for the Toronto police department.
9. Road to Avonlea
Answer: Prince Edward Island
"Road to Avonlea" ran on CBC Television and The Disney Channel in Canada from 1990 to 1996. It was (very) loosely based on the stories and characters created by Lucy Maud Montgomery in her landmark novel "Anne of Green Gables" and her subsequent books.
It is set in fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island and set early in the twentieth century. The stories principally concern the King family but branch out to introduce other recurring characters.
10. Degrassi Junior High
Answer: Toronto
The Degrassi franchise is one of the longest-running collection of Canadian TV series. It included a children's show, "The Kids of Degrassi Street" (1982-1986), followed by "Degrassi Junior High" (1987-1989) then "Degrassi High" (1989-1991), and finally a 90-minute made-for-TV movie which concluded the 'adventures' of the cast, some of whom were part of the original series, "The Kids of Degrassi Street".
The franchise was revived in 2001 as "Degrassi: the Next Generation" and ran until 2014. A further revival, "Degrassi: The Next Class" made its debut in 2016. Degrassi Street is a real street in the eastern part of Toronto.
In its later seasons the show tackled all sorts of controversial issues: teen pregnancy, abortion, homosexuality, abusive bullying, mental illness, but always with frankness and sensitivity.
